Scripture specifically says that a king must not have many wives. It is Duet 17:17. It is idolatry, plain and simple. If you cannot understand that, I am not sure how else to put it to you. Solomon had seven hundred wives plus three hundred concubines. Surely that is excessive?

I feel exhausted just thinking about it. I wonder why he had three hundred concubines, why not just have a thousand wives . He must have had an addiction to wedding cake.
*[[Deu 17:17]] KJV* Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

The reason given there is that his heart will turn away. This is the same as worshipping other gods
*[[Deu 21:15]] KJV* If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
I disagree, because having so many wives is also a form of idolatry. Pursuing women (or the accumulation of women) to the point of having a thousand at your disposal is not seen as excessive by you? It seems you are looking too much at the letter of the law and not the spirit.
we had bible study with the youth about solomon turning away from God. when we shared with the kiddos about the number of wives and concubine, one of them was utterly shocked. he then tried to do the math of how sleeping arrangements would rotate. we were like "dude.. just give up." lol
How many women do you wish to lust after and make your wife all the while pretending it is okayed in Scripture when you have absolutely nothing to support your view but the recorded accounts of sinful men?

The law as given was in a culture where women (and girls) belonged to either their fathers or their husbands. Therefore, wanting any woman meant you were coveting something that was not yours. Therefore you are breaking the tenth commandment.
