I was taught PEMDAS. Parenthesis. Exponents. Multiplication. Division. Addition. Subtract. 2+2 is in the parenthesis, so that'd be 4. You times the other 2 with that now 4 which is 8. Then you divide 8 by 8 which gives you 1. That's if it's followed by PEMDAS.
I was taught PEMDAS too but it's supposed to be this way.

Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication or
Division
Addition or
Subtraction

The "or" parts are important because they tell you that multiplication and division are in the same category. So you are right that we need to do the (2+2) part first. But then we need to divide before multiplying since division and multiplication are the same in Order of Operations. It goes from left to right.

8/2(2+2) = 8/2(4) = 4(4) = 16

I used to be really confused by all this too and thought there were different answers but then they showed me the or parts and it made so much more sense.

Multiplication and division goes first, doesn't it?

8 divided by 2 is 4
2+2 is 4

4x4 is 16

My answer is 1 b/c PEMDAS as others have stated

the parentheses is always considered multiplication

8/2(2+2)

8/2(4) the 4 is still considered multiplication or even parentheses so that takes pre-eminence over the division so do that first before division

8/8 = 1

Even if you do the problem setup as fractions 8/1 divided by 2(2+2)/1

8/1 then multiply by (1/2(2+2))

8/1 multiply by 1/2(4)

8/1 mutiply by 1/8 = 1

I was taught on an abacus and had to show my answers by chiseling them on a smooth rock.

I don't even remember how to chisel, but my brain came up with 16 and I guessed right.

Soo...I really like math and I feel like arguing my point as to why it's 16 but it's just a math question lol. I'll leave it be :)

I suck at math. I hate math. BUT I was great at bookkeeping because I love money. It doesn't have to be my money. I just like seeing big amounts of it on the books. I got to write four and five figure checks monthly. My only regret was why did they spend all that money on sheet metal?

I can't tell you what 1/3rd of 80 feet is, but I can tell you what 1/3rd of 80 bucks is. lol

Thank you. I see I got in a hurry, and left out the 4x4 step. (I hate it when I do that.)

I saw 16 in the replies, so I answered 16.

Answer this: Joan has 500.00, she wants to buy 250 watermelons. Then she wants to take a train from Mexico to South Dakota to meet her on line boyfriend of 8 year's, whom she's never Skyped, talked on the phone, seen a picture or emailed with. How long will it take Joan's train to scale Donald Trumps proposed wall?
The answer is definitely 42.

It's 16.

Parenthesis first, then exponents, multiplication/division, then addition, and subtraction.

Does anyone have a graphing calculator? Just type in the equation and see what it comes up with.

I come up with 1.

But I understand how you could come up with 16.

The answer depends on if you consider the 8/2 part as a coefficient or as a separate equation part

it can be

8
___

2(2+2)

or

8/2 (2+2) where you do the 8/2 part first and get 4 x 4 = 16
