airforce has plane that flies around 80,000 feet. It requires pressurized suits. From this height the curvature of the earth is visible...flat earth debunked

What kind of beacon you talking about both light and radio beacons move differently depending on the intended direction of that beacon rather it be on point or a 360 degree radius or anything in between.

How to prove beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt that the Earth is flat, and not a sphere...

Position, somewhere on the Equator, a stationary reference "beacon" that sends out a signal in all directions -- or, at least - either East or West - with an angular range from North to South ( i.e. - 180 degrees with East / West in center - albeit, only the North 90 degrees will be significant ).

Position, on a ship / airplane, a directional receiver - such that, it can be determined with sufficient accuracy the angle ( relative to the Equator - or, directly behind ship / airplane ) the reference beacon is being detected.

Using a directional transmitter-receiver at both points would be even better.

Make sure that the signal - of whatever type - is of sufficient strength to reach a very long distance - and cannot be "blocked" by anything that might happen to come between the reference beacon and the ship / airplane.

As the ship / airplane moves away from the beacon, while staying on the equator:

~ If the Earth is a sphere, the signal will be lost soon enough because of the curvature of the earth; however, the angle from reference will never waiver from 0 degrees -- the beacon will always be directly behind the ship / airplane.

~ If the Earth is flat, the signal will be sustained for whatever distance it is capable of being detected; and, the detection angle will increase with the distance between the reference beacon and the ship / airplane.

Why? Because the ship / airplane will actually be following a circular path over the face of the Earth.

This will only work on the Equator - because, from a perspective regarding the angular part of the above suggested experiment - it is the only lattitude that is supposed to be a continual straight line all the way around the globe. And, that is why - if the results of the latter case are obtained - the Earth cannot possibly be a sphere.

a lesson on wavelengths may be called for here, long-waves defract with solid objects that can cause them to bend, whereas short-waves generally go a shorter distance but go straight, unless reflected.


  • Ground waves: At lower frequencies, in the medium wave and longwave bands, due to diffraction vertically polarized radio waves can bend over hills and mountains, and beyond the horizon, traveling as surface waves which follow the contour of the Earth. This allows mediumwave and longwave broadcasting stations to have coverage areas beyond the horizon, out to hundreds of miles. As the frequency drops, the losses decrease and the achievable range increases. Military very low frequency (VLF) communication systems can communicate over most of the Earth, and with submarines hundreds of feet underwater.

Sounds simple enough. So... why have you not yet done it? Why has nobody yet done it?

And if someone did it and found results you did not like, would you believe the results anyway? Or would you claim they were faked... while still refusing to do them yourself?

And by the way, if there are no satellites in space then we sure have a lot more stars than we used to have. And some of them move awfully fast and blink. Ever used a telescope before?

That is a great precept. One which has many applications, whether considering the shape of the earth or other matters.

To the OP:

Since I am a geography major, long time ago in undergrad, I like maps. A lot!

So could you please publish a map here, or a link to one, of exactly what the earth would look like flat. Obviously, a Mercator projection would not work, as the Pacific Ocean is rather divided.

Since my son and his wife and our two grandchildren just flew to Hong Kong across the Pacific three weeks ago, and arrived safely, not falling off the "edge" of the earth, Mercator will not work.

Not seeing how any "flat" projection of the earth would work. (Probably because the earth is a sphere!) But surely it would be much easier to map a flat earth, than all the issues that come up with trying to fold a flat piece of paper around a globe model of the earth?

So could you please publish a map here, or a link to one, of exactly what the earth would look like flat. Obviously, a Mercator projection would not work, as the Pacific Ocean is rather divided.

I can't take credit for the comments - it's an old xkcd comic. But personally I prefer the Plate Carree version for simplicity, though I can see how the Dymaxion map would appeal to people who value accuracy highly.

GaryA your wall of ice is much smaller than you think. And we can send jets right over it, and they never have found an edge. And you still haven't told me what all those lights are in the sky that weren't there 20 years ago. I was alive 20 years ago and there weren't nearly as many incredibly fast, blinking stars in the sky back then.

my favorites are the robinson projection...the winkel-tripel projection...the goode homolosine projection...and the equirectangular projection...in no particular order...

is there supposed to be some kind of non euclidean miracle at the edges of the map so that anyone whose travel intersects with the edge and keeps moving immediately zaps to somewhere else on the edge and starts moving away from it?
