As believers in Messiah, we can appreciate the power of pray.

In this verse, what is the author really saying?

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law,
even his prayer [shall be] abomination.
Proverbs 28:9 (KJV, MBM)

I think the Hebrew word for "hearing" in this verse is (shaw-mah'}, which implies not just hearing, but hearing and obeying.

My brothers and sisters in Messiah, what are your thoughts?
 
I believe that those who refuse to listen to the law, even their prayers are false and mock the Lord,
That may be what the verse ment:)
 
I know that in the New Covenant it means to hear the word about Christ as He is the fulfillment of the Old Covenant law.

To read correctly the law in the Old Testament - in the New Covenant we need to put in Christ when we see the word "law" as Jesus is the real substance of which the law was but a shadow.

Romans 10:17 (NASB)
[SUP]17 [/SUP] So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Ephesians 1:13 (NASB)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,


The obedience of the faith is to believe what Christ has done for salvation and living now.

Notice that the priests were being obedient to the faith. These priests were already walking in the law - but the law is NOT of faith.

Obeying the law is NOT the obedience of the faith in the New Covenant.

We have died to the law, have been released from the Law and not under the law now that we are in Christ in the New Covenant.

Acts 6:7 (NASB)
[SUP]7 [/SUP] The word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

We know that our God hears us because we believe in Christ as these are the commandments in the New Covenant which is "all based on Christ".

1 John 3:22-23 (NASB)
[SUP]22 [/SUP] and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.

[SUP]23 [/SUP] This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.

As new creations in Christ in the New Covenant - we believe on Christ and all that He has already done and we walk in love towards each other as the fruit of the spirit is manifested in our lives.

If you truly understood the Law, you would understood that NO man can keep the Law.
The purpose of the Law is to point out to man just how evil he is and that his only hope is is Jesus the promised Messiah.

Luk 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

My thoughts are that the King of the universe would NEVER command men to do a thing that could not be done... this lie that none can obey him is from satan himself and many have chosen for various reasons to believe it, even though his word clearly teaches that not only can we obey , His spirit empowers us to do so.

The law is NOT of faith. The truly righteous with the righteousness of God - not the righteousness of the law - lives by faith in Christ - not in keeping of the law.

The law does not have within itself the capacity to make one righteous as the Pharisees found out by the words of Jesus.

If one is to keep the law - they must keep it all...not pick and choose to make it seem "do-able". Christ is the end of the law for righteousness.

The law served it's purpose - now it's time to believe in Christ's work. To go back to the law for life and living is deserting Christ for another gospel.

James said if you break one law - you are guilty of it all. Law-keepers have both a very low respect for the law of Moses and for the work of Christ at the same time. Christ is enough for us in the New Covenant.

Paul who knew the law better then anyone had this to say about the purpose of the law.

The purpose of the law was :

1) To reveal our sinful state. Rom 3:20

2) To inflame sin Rom 7:8

3) To minister death in us Rom 7:10-11

4) To lead us to Christ Gal 3:24

The law is good, holy and spiritual but we are in the flesh. Jesus fulfilled all the law! When we read the law we should be seeing Jesus in it. Jesus did not save us so that we could go back to the law.

But the purpose of the law was not for righteousness or salvation at all, it was to manifest sin in our lives, so that the purpose of grace which is in Jesus is to manifest salvation. Grace does not set aside the law, but completely satisfied it.

People are free to do whatever they want in relation to the Law - it does not make one righteous nor is it for salvation.

If someone wants to observe a particular day or eat or not eat some kinds of foods..etc - then they are free to do so. These have no bearing on one's salvation or righteousness as all that is based on the finished work of Christ.

It's where people are saying "You must observe these things or do these things in the Law or you are not obeying God" - that's where the twisting comes in and it is a perversion of the gospel of the grace of Christ.

My thought is that you have yet to hear what the law is saying about you....

either you choose to Follow the Messiah of the narrow path or you choose to follow the one of the wide path your choice , and misapplying scripture based on an understanding derived from mans interpretation of what Paul's writings actually say...will never serve to convince me. you never cease to insist that just because one chooses to obey the Savior means they trying to establish their own righteousness from the law... go and learn what the text means in its context and cease from your false and unlearned accusations please.
 
Is this what we really need another law thread? Really this is Christianity at its best? Go and preach the word to all nations to all tongue, heal, raise the dead, baptize, cast out demons, or you can debate the law and grace for the rest of your life or untill I come back...
