from listening to him elsewhere I gathered something different from his initial post

Your account says you are unsure about whether you are a Christian. Jesus was definitely for families. But yes,there is also the family of God but one doesn't make the other less important. They work together and not against each other. God set up both the family AND the church family. So yes we are all related, in both families and we work for His purpose.
