Here's a novel idea - why don't we just believe the Lord when scripture says He has redeemed us with His blood and that we in fact do have forgiveness of sins.
As you can see we have been taught in our church traditions that 1 John 1:9 was like a bar of soap for believers and yet there is no scripture that talks about it at all. Paul who wrote 1/3 of the NT didn't say anything about this except that we have forgiveness of sins in a continuous state.
I believe well meaning people think they are defending the faith when they oppose this truth about having complete forgiveness of sins but in reality they are just defending their man-made tradition.
This kind of a stronghold in our minds is a really tough one to root out but the Holy Spirit does reveal to us the awesome truth of what our Lord Jesus has done for us and that we are free in Him!
I say let's be believers and actually start believing in what Jesus has done for us.
If this confessing of sins "in order" to receive forgiveness is so important to believers...why wouldn't Paul talk about it in any of his epistles?
I believe all Christians should be confessing all things with their Father and Lord. We should be confessing ( which means to say the same thing, to agree with - in Greek ) not only all sins but everything Jesus has provided for us in His finished work.
1 John 1:9 was telling those people that didn't believe that there is "sin" at all or that they in fact do sin but 1 John 1:9 was saying to confess that there is sin and that you need a Savior.
The sins of unbelief in the work of Christ is the one sin that will cause you to spend eternity without experiencing the life of God in us.
