So we all basically know about this story right try to make a tower to heaven to see god etc but god punishes them and trys to destroy it well I have a question about this story. God stoped these people because he was afraid that they will reach heaven but now we have been space via rockets how comes he didn't destroy them and stop us from going into space and reaching heaven isn't that a little odd or is this story made up
 
I don't know 100% for sure that this is the reason, but it is what I think(I am being serious too not trying to just joke around or anything). In the story of Babel they were trying to get to God. Nowadays we are just trying to explore Space. Not trying to get to God. Although, if we were trying to get to God I wouldn't be able to say that He would destroy the rockets and whatnot.

I think the simple answer would be to ask God when you get to Heaven, although it would probably be pointless then lol

My particular problem with the story isn't so much as the story itself, but rather the fact that people talk about building their homes on hills to be closer to God. Isn't that a direct contradiction to the story of Babel?
 
This is purely my opinion, and I hope people don't get too angry at me. I realize I'm probably a fundamentalist's worse nightmare...

I was told in 6th grade by my religion teacher that everything in the Bible is True, but not everything is fact. This is something that I definitely believe. Some things may have actually happened, but I can also deal with it if it was merely a story to convey a message, God's message.

The construction actual of the Tower of Babel may or may not have happened, but I don't think it's something to worry about. The point is this: The people were trying to exalt themselves and show their own greatness--maybe even try to become equal to God. They were building not to glorify the Lord, but themselves.
(Genesis 11:4) God did not like their rebellious actions and scattered them.
Moral of the story? Limit your pride. God is God, and we are not. God humbles those who exalt themselves.

Our intentions for exploring space is not to reach heaven. Maybe we are trying to show our own greatness (competition with other countries), but we are not trying to become gods in this way.

Plus, I feel that we now know that if we continue to travel upward, we won't bump into heaven.

God didn't want them to congregate in one area instead of multiplying across the earth, so He confounded their language. Outer space exploration is not aimed at getting to Heaven to see God.
 
They were developing a mentality to reach God, in an attempt to show how great they were, the same attitude shown by Lucifer. It had more to do with erasing that mentality than that God was genuinely fearful they would reach Him.
 
That wasn't it whatsoever, Nimrod was a very wicked man, and because God had destroyed man once through the flood he had the tower of babel built to mock God by saying that your flood won't be able to destroy this. It was the ultimate mockery to God so he destroyed it.
 
God prevented the Tower of Babel from being built so that in the future Donald Trump would not feel intimidated by its architecture.
 
Okay first off...idk what bible you are reading but mine says nothing about God being afraid. Second God didn't want them all to work together to build a tower to heaven on their own instead of trusting in God to get to heaven like they were supposed to. They tried to do things on their own using power God gave them and excluding God which is actually witch craft if you didn't know it. Anyways it was wicked in the eyes of the Lord. Besides if God had let people work their way up to heaven then what would it show about his character? God is merciful and people are all sinful in nature and so God had to send Jesus to make a proper way for us to get into heaven. He showed his mercy and love. If God only based our salvation on our works then noone would make it into heaven because everyone would be evil in God's eyes because he is too holy.
 
It is not made up. It was some time ago. Becase it may seem distant and a hard thing to see in our minds. That dose not give us authority to say it was not so. At that time all people had the same language. God stated in that state there would be nothing they would not be abl to acomplish. God has a plan of salvation that must run its course. The tower of confution was an atempt ; to create their own salvation. There is to be one salvation. That is Christ.

If you read the passage instead of relying on preconceived straw men, you'd know that it wasn't about God being afraid of people reaching space.

The Tower of Babel is about the incessant striving to create a global state and universal culture/language in order to dominate the world. Reading Genesis 11:5-6, it says:

"But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them."

Now obviously this doesn't sound too bad when you take it at face value. The collective intelligence of human beings would allow us to achieve anything we desired. It might not sound so wonderful when you consider the question of what we actually desire - are humans fundamentally "good", and do they always have noble desires carried out in ethical fashion through intricate plans?

If anything, history should demonstrate the opposite. We've seen the rise and fall of ideological forces making universal claims about the political nature of man and attempting to unite the world under their auspices. Marxism, modern capitalism, neo-conservatism, and the universal so-called "liberalism" espoused by the likes of the howling Jacobins dancing in the bloody streets of a terrified Paris are just a few examples.

The process of uniting mankind under a single political entity and ideology should be a horrific prospect. If nothing we plan is impossible for us, then no act of terrifying violence or oppression will be beyond our means, and the execution of those terrible plans would be mitigated only by the limits of our depraved imaginations.

And that's why Babel must be destroyed.
 
I didn't read others posts but He stopped them bc nothing would be impossible for them to accomplish seeing that they were all in agreement

Where does it say that God destroyed the tower? He just confused their languages and they stopped building it...

No God did not fear they would build it high enough to see Him... God was stopping them from wasting all that effort and time for nothing but more importantly God was using the event to give us a very important symbolic message..

The tower of babel symbolizes the works salvation religious mindset.. It shows the idea of men working to raise themselves up to heaven to be equal with God.. God destroyed their vain efforts to show us that no man can work and strive to attain entry into heaven. No man can work to justify his own place with God..

True.. Good observation... But anyway in the end God put a stop to their efforts... Because they where all in vain..

You are right. It is not a matter of believing that everything in the Bible is factual but understanding the inner meaning of
a passage. People confuse truth with facts. The two things don't necessarily mean the same. The Bible is a Spiritual Book not an Encyclopedia.

God did not stop the building of the tower because He was afraid the people would see Him.....He did not want them to open the doors they were opening....They opened doors to allow fallen angels to come through...They wanted the knowledge and the tech of the fallen ones. They did NOT want God. They wanted be be gods

That idea of constructing a tower to "reach God" was never the intention. Rather, The Tower was built as an invitation for God to use it as His means of visiting us. (Just one of hundreds of such towers constructed in that area, BTW.)

Huh? How do you read that into this?
