But totalitarianism is more than a mere abuse of power. Macbeth was a power abuser, but he was not a totalitarian.

I think you are inferring a great deal more from that statement than there is to analyze. He's a cad and clearly a lech. But that does not a totalitarian make.

abuse of power is the defining characteristic of trump's nature...whether you call that 'totalitarian' or not is semantics...

the point is that those who abuse power will only ever elevate those who will permit the ongoing abuse of power...that includes any appointments trump would make to the supreme court if he were elected...

It isn't merely a matter of Semantics. The difference between a totalitarian and garden variety tyrant is a deeply entrenched ideological justification for the continued abuse of that power. It permeates every aspect of the subject's existence because the ruler is not the only one to holds the idea or enforces it.

Mere abuse of power or tendency to abuse power is not a viable acid test. To say it is would imply North Korea's current regime is the moral and political equivalent of Habsburg Spain.
