Is swearing a sin

Will God send you straight to hell for it? I'm going to say most likely not. But at the same time this is something that God's currently dealing with me on. It isn't something I've ever attempted to curb and I really never paid attention to it until I really felt like God asked me why I used some of the words I was using and who/what attitude my words reflected. For me, It isn't ok. Because the attitude behind it is the old me. And I don't really want that kid hanging around. Do I think anyone else is horrible if they use them? No. But I'd challenge anyone asking this question to question why they are questioning.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

I've memorized this...And when I slip...which is insanely awful at this point I repeat it to myself a few times. In the end the attitude behind my words were as bad if not worse than the actual words being said...so they do not fit the occasion at all.

So as not to be accused of dancing around this subject, let me go on record as saying I think "cussing" is probably unnecessary, and mostly crude. But I definitely do not think it is sinning.

There are so many prettier words we can use and yes, at one time I had my young daughter say shame, shame, shame to me to help me quit my cussing habit....

Would you feel comfortable in God's presence to say any cuss word?

Then that's your answer as what might be sinning for one person wouldn't be a problem for another.

Why use "bad words" at all?

If something makes you angry, say it makes you angry, no need to go bleep bleep bleep.
and if one isn't angry, why use curse words at all? I think it's really stupid to say a curse word to describe something good (i.e that's a bleep nice car)

I can't remember the last time I swore. I used to think it was okay to swear in moments of great frustration, trouble, or physical pain, such as having an anvil drop on my foot, but I haven't sworn in a long time.

Yes, it is. Everything what is not good and from the Light is a sin.

You cannot walk in Light as apostle John wrote and be swearing in the same time.

Here's a clue guys.

1 John 5 says that all unrighteousness is sin. So ask yourself, is swearing righteous? If it is, we better all get busy using bad language as much as possible because it's righteous living.

Either it's righteous or it's not. Maybe we need to begin a thread on what sin is, what does it mean, what are transgressions?

I feel 100% more comfortable with God about anything than I do with people.

In the past I've cried out to Father God with great alarm and exasperation more than a few times using expletives. I don't fear running to God with my heart exposed because he already knows me intimately anyway. And the more God made my heart rest, the less I used those harsh words. ♥

On the other hand, I know lots of people consider all expletives as profanity so I make an attempt to curb my tongue. Nowadays if I stub my toe, can't find where I left my keys, or am suddenly alarmed by something creepy, I usually clench my teeth and growl like a cat. =^..^=

I started doing that years ago when I read in James 3 that if I could control my tongue, I could control myself perfectly in all other ways, too. So I figured if I'd just growl or utter a groan, I'm golden. Heehee!

My three kids made fun of me for years because I don't even realize I'm doing it most times. LOL!!

I usually associate the literal meaning with the swear words and ask my own mind...

That would mean me considering the swear as not a swear word.

I forgot to bring my science project and I remember about it when my friends discuss about it. I could say s**t but I tell myself why would I think of feces and excretion in this worsened situation?
Would it make this situation any better?

Similarly, the other ones too I take the actual meaning so even if I'm angry I'm less likely to use them?

Everyone has a slip of the tongue even Christians just have to ask for forgiveness since we aren't perfect. Saying it knowing it's wrong then that's the problem. It's also not right to sugar coat such things.
