Did they go back to teaching phonics again? They got too-phonic for my younger brother. (Ten years younger.) He didn't learn vowels. He learned those funny looking combo-letters for short vowel sounds. And then when I was in college learning how to teach, they taught me that kids don't need phonetics. They need to memorize words. Never did teach, so I have no idea what they're teaching kids anymore, except in Philly public schools, where they teach them nothing and the kids learn nothing well.

Sorry, I win the incompetency title. I loved English so much I wanted to be a high school (secondary education... i think you call that college, but we call uni college) English teacher. I went to college and took every English course they had plus every writing course they had.
Little problem. I have always stunk at grammar. To this day I have to look up the difference between a gerund and a participle phrase. Gerunds I can get. I cannot get what the heck a participle is! (Don't try to teach me. I've read books. I've researched online. I've asked. You could memorize the spelling list long enough to pass the test? I cannot remember participle phrase long enough to pass a test if you gave me the test a minute after I thought I was ready for it.
) Grammar has to have seeped into me when I was young so I just don't worry about it, but it looks right, or I cannot get it.And what became of me? I have a degree in Communications/Sec. Ed, but never was certified to teach. And what have I chosen to do now? Write articles and books. (I also did some kind of business writing for the decades I worked.) Go figure! Zilch ability to learn grammar and I'm still making it in this world.
I win the Incompetency Prize.
Yeah, I go with that option. I mean, after all, how do WE KNOW that the folks who came up with all these spelling and grammatical rules were not dyslexic or something?

And then there is effect and affect. Doubly annoying when I hit effective and affective.
Also, passed and past. (Just learned that five years ago.)
Lay and lay. (One is past tense of lie, so that whole telling me that ditty really doesn't help.)
And good ole rooting vs. routing. (A week ago, I finally found out how to say I'm rooting for my team!)

There is something many writers call "The Bible for writing." It's Elements of Style by Strunk and White. (White was Strunk's student, and best known for writing Charlotte's Web.) It ends up they couldn't even keep to their rules of style in their own book. 50 Years of Stupid Grammar Advice

Well I used to hate it too but now where Im getting my college degree and all Im glad when people correct me 
It hurt me to see it, but my daughter would be embarrassed and somewhat miffed and offended when I would correct her grammar when she was younger... but I told her people would think she was stupid if she could not spell or speak properly (on chat boards mostly), and I wanted to spare her that humiliation. She eventually came to see that I really was trying to help her out of my love for her

Just to clarify my prior post.
in my experiences interacting with people with varying backgrounds, education levels, nationalities, asset levels, language capabilities, or situations where I'm not even fluent in the local language, the most important thing to me is just being able to make sure I'm understood or that if I'm in a position where I don't understand someone else, I try and clarify however I need to until there is a mutual understanding.
My parents are pretty fluent in spoken English at this point but they aren't going to win any Pulitzer prizes, that's for sure.
I became great friends with an elderly driver in Ecuador earlier this year and we use Google translate to exchange emails now. I can only imagine how horrible my written Spanish is.
My job goes a lot smoother if I can convey a lot of information in the simplest terms possible. Sometimes that involves shorthand.
Ultimately I take a pretty pragmatic approach...I'm forgiving of poor grammar as long as it isn't an impediment to communication.

Being quite proficient at grammatical usage is a curse of mine. (I have 16 teachers and Professors in my family, and I am married to a Language Arts Major.) My poor ears go nuts listening to much of the mess preachers and the Talking Heads on newscasts make of the English language. At spelling, however, I am terrible........ and right now, I am using my wife's computer which has no spell checker. (I'm upgrading, and the shop is slow.) It's killing me. I've made three mistakes in this one post, alone.
lol. Well I am glad that I am not a perfectionist as well. There's only very few things where I tend to become careful in my writing, such as writing to teachers, people of a higher position or for application letters. I would have a major problem without spellchecker for sure. Especially I tend to get issues with certain words and it drives me crazy every time.
