Show me that what you claim to do and what Paul did are in fact the same thing.

Show from the scriptures exactly what are tongues in the NT church. You cannot get two Pentecostals or charismatics to agree together on languages or ecstatic utterances or mystical angelic prayer languages.

What could you possibly find in the NT writings of Christ that would lead you to conclude that we should desire self edification?

The lack of holiness, the lack of purity and the lack of virtue in the modern NT church has me ready to scream. It must be like when Moses came down from the mountain and saw the Israelites making a golden idol. Imagine the anguish of heart Moses must have experienced in that moment. Here is Moses fresh from the presence of Jehovah God and bearing the commandments of God written by Gods own hand and he sees Israel worshipping an idol they created.

I can only imagine how Paul felt in his heart toward the church in Corinth.

For the cause of Christ

You do know that "gifts" here was added . . . the more true definition here of pneumatikos would be "spiritual matters" or "spiritual things". Paul is saying he doesn't want those born again ignorant concerning spiritual matters.

In verse one he is addressing born again Christians who WERE Gentiles carried away unto dumb idols; i.e. mute idols, or the idols, the mute [ones] . . . BTW, in the church, the body of Christ there is no more Jew nor Gentile but all are one in the body of Christ.

Now, if I wanted to read between the lines to get more substance - I would say that he is letting them know and wants them to understand that no one speaking by the spirit of God calls Jesus accursed because of how the manifestation of the Spirit were being handled - With everyone speaking in tongues at once . . . no interpretation . . . they thought they were mad or even demonic - #1 - verse one is speaking to those who could understand spiritual matters - those born of the Spirit; #2 - verse two is speaking about before they were born again . . . NO ONE can speak by the Spirit unless they are born again of the Spirit. This goes right along with verse one . . . I do not want you ignorant therefore I give you to understand. . . .

v4 . . Now there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit. . . many gifts but God is the giver of all
v5 . . There are different administrations, but the same Lord. . . . different "services"
v6 . . And there are diversities of operations but the same God which works in all. God energizes the signs, miracles and wonders
v7 . . BUT, BUT, BUT . . . setting in contrast that which was said before . . . the MANIFESTATION of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (common good). Then begins the list of the ways in which the "gift" of holy spirit is manifested (8-10). This word "manifestation" is the Greek word phanerosis and it means "to cause something to be fully known by revealing clearly and in some detail" - "to make known, to make plain, to reveal, to bring to the light, to disclose, revelation". v7 . . . Tells us that: That which happened with the new birth, that new creation within, spirit that was born in us will be manifested in the physical realm . . . these are ways in which the gift of holy spirit is used.
VERY GOOD POINT, I was wondering when someone would pick up on the fact, that Paul really did not call TONGUES a gift.

That Term "CARRIED AWAY" to dumb idols, actually refers to being out of self control; which actually does accurately describe what was happening in those Mystery Religions in Corinth, especially those who taught their followers to speak in ecstatic babbling tongues. They referred to those "carried away" experiences as ecstasies. Even Plato referred to them as "Divine Ecstasies:, and commented "It was as if I had LINKED UP WITH THE GODS."

I counted thirteen places of Pagan Worship within the City Center of Corinth, if you count the Baths of Eurykles, which had near the entrance statues of Poseidon, Leucothea, Palaimon on a dolphin, and Artemis hunting. Three of those Pagan Worship Centers, were for the Worship of Apollo. Distance to those Pagan Worship Centers, from the suspected location of house where the Corinthian Church met, as the crow flies, appear to be less than 2 blocks to possibly 6 blocks. So the potential influence of Pagan customs and religious practices creeping into the Church in Corinth, would have been a constant threat, especially prior to the writing of 2 Corinthians.

The comment that there is Neither Jew nor Gentile, etc., it is a reference to our spiritual position within the Spiritual Body of Christ. It is not reference to our physical position here on earth or our ethnic background. If you try to make it fit the physical realm, you open Pandora's Box and justify homosexual marriage. Think about it.

1 Corinthians 12:13 (KJV)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Galatians 3:28 (HCSB)
[SUP]28 [/SUP] There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Which if you took that to be applicable to physical relationships too, you would cause GREAT Contradictions in the Bible.

1 Corinthians 14:34 (ESV)
[SUP]34 [/SUP] the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.

1 Timothy 2:12 (ESV)
[SUP]12 [/SUP] I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (HCSB)
[SUP]9 [/SUP] Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or anyone practicing homosexuality,
[SUP]10 [/SUP] no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom.

Ephesians 6:5-6 (HCSB)
[SUP]5 [/SUP] Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ.
[SUP]6 [/SUP] Don’t ⌊work only⌋ while being watched, in order to please men, but as slaves of Christ, do God’s will from your heart.
Galatians 2:14 (NIV)
[SUP]14 [/SUP] When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

Acts 21:39-40 (ESV)
[SUP]39 [/SUP] Paul replied, “I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no obscure city. I beg you, permit me to speak to the people.”
[SUP]40 [/SUP] And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hand to the people. And when there was a great hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying:

1 Corinthians 9:19-21 (NIV)
[SUP]19 [/SUP] Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.
[SUP]20 [/SUP] To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.
[SUP]21 [/SUP] To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law.

Like I said when you try to force our spiritual co-equal position in the spiritual Body of Christ into the physical realm, you are erroneously making it apply to our physical realm, therefore you open the Pandora's Box of creating contradictions in the Scriptures, misinterpretations, and justifying of sin in the Church.

You people really do not listen and connect the dots do At the Time Paul wrote 1 Corinthians, that genuine Tongues were still active because there were a specific number of Jews that would respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, whose names were written in the book of life before the world was formed, and believe, after seeing and hearing the SIGN that this New Testament was of GOD.

1 Corinthians 1:22 (KJV)
[SUP]22 [/SUP] For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

Acts 18:7-11 (HCSB)
[SUP]7 [/SUP] So he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.
[SUP]8 [/SUP] Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed the Lord, along with his whole household. Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.
[SUP]9 [/SUP] Then the Lord said to Paul in a night vision, “Don’t be afraid, but keep on speaking and don’t be silent.
[SUP]10 [/SUP] For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city.”
[SUP]11 [/SUP] And he stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

No one has mentioned that fact that TONGUES are not mentioned a SINGLE TIME in 2 Corinthians. Could that be because that the NUMBER of unbelieving Jews who would see, hear the SIGN of TONGUES, had been reached and they now believed in the LORD JESUS CHRIST as their MESSIAH? Therefore the purpose for the genuine SIGN of TONGUES had been fulfilled and therefore that temporal SIGN came to an END.
Does it mean that they came to an end or Could it possibly mean that God recorded enough information concerning the manifestation of the gift of holy spirit in 1 Cor. 12,13 and 14 - Apparently He thought he had covered enough information there and that there was no need for further accounts . . .

As you said in Post #765:

It sounds to me that you probably think, "if it is not specifically in the BIBLE, it did not happen", I presume? If that is so, then you do not know that we do not have every event in the Bible, only the Highlights:

John 21:25 (KJV)
[SUP]25 [/SUP] And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Thank you VCO . . . I am glad that there is something we can agree on! LOL. I have always spoken of "tongues" as a manifestation of the gift of holy spirit and I wish others would also.

God uses specific words when speaking in His word and I believe we should stick with them. Which leads to - "ecstatic babbling tongues" - God didn't refer to "tongues" with this term - Why should I? "Divine Ecstasies" - God didn't refer to "tongues" with this term - Why should I? "carried away" - led astray - apago has the sense of intensity . . . although the people did follow willingly, it was the forceful presentation and charisma of the pagan leaders that was a powerful force in leading people astray . . . Paul makes the point that when the Gentiles were led to idols, they were being led astray. This happens today with many teachers, who lead people astray into hurtful and harmful doctrines and practices . . . NOTHING NEW under the sun . . .

Yes, I understand that our position in the body of Christ (spiritually) is as one body with many members. But God does look at us spiritually and therefore He sees no difference - when I read there is neither Jew nor Gentile, male or female, bond or free; I compare it to: there is neither black nor white, Asian or American, etc. because we are all ONE in the body of Christ, brothers and sisters, each having an important place within the body. God classifies people as Jew, Gentile, and church of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 1 Cor. 10:32
As for women in the church . . . . God chooses whom he will . . .

Scripture differs with that opinion:

Matthew 24:11 (ASV)
[SUP]11 [/SUP] And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.

2 Timothy 3:13 (ESV)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Matthew 24:24-25 (ESV)
[SUP]24 [/SUP] For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
[SUP]25 [/SUP] See, I have told you beforehand.

1 John 4:1 (ESV)
[SUP]1 [/SUP] Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 Peter 2:1 (HCSB)
[SUP]1 [/SUP] But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, and will bring swift destruction on themselves.

That is quite a bit of religious speak that has no merit. It means nothing and is mere husks where food is sought.

It is hardly binding people to teach them to obey the word of God. It is not condemnation to encourage biblical belief. Living water is not tongues and still no one in the charismatic or Pentecostal camp will demonstrate from the scriptures that what they practice and call tongues is what Paul and the apostolic church practiced.

So are you saying 1 John 2:4, DOES NOT APPLY TO CHARISMATIC AND PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES?

1 John 2:3-5 (HCSB)
[SUP]3 [/SUP] This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands.
[SUP]4 [/SUP] The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” yet doesn't keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
[SUP]5 [/SUP] But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God is perfected. This is how we know we are in Him:

And do you think that strange way of looking at things, is what HE meant by TEST THE SPIRITS?

We absolutely believe these are some of the FALSE PROPHETS that have crept into Church today, but you seem to think it is okay as long as you white wash it with your brush . . . God chooses whom he will . . .?

[video=youtube;ptN2KQ7-euQ]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptN2KQ7-euQ&t=21s[/video]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko5zkkZ0GmQ

There many more, who are nothing more than religious con-artists. YouTube has a NUMEROUS amounts of Videos exposing these false prophets, yet more and more fall for these religious con-artists every year.

It nauseates me to see them deceiving so many in these last days:

Matthew 7:15-16 (ESV)
[SUP]15 [/SUP] “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
[SUP]16 [/SUP] You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

Acts 20:29-31 (ESV)
[SUP]29 [/SUP] I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;
[SUP]30 [/SUP] and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.
[SUP]31 [/SUP] Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears.

Are we not supposed to be continually watching for, and identifying, and WARNING others about these False Prophets and Teachers. Did not Paul HIMSELF warn others by NAMING those False Prophets and Teachers of his day, and NOT pass the buck by saying
. . . God chooses whom he will . . . ?

1 Timothy 1:19-20 (NIV)
[SUP]19 [/SUP] holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.
[SUP]20 [/SUP] Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

That's good to hear. The Bible says,
And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

'earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that ye may prophesy'
'....hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.'
'Let the prophets speak two or three'
'....covet to prophesy and forbid not to speak with tongues.'
'Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things. Hold fast to that which is good.'

If we could agree to obey these scriptures also, we might be on the same page.

A stubborn misinterpretation of a few verses can lead to disobience to many scriptures.

So you think you rose above being obedient to this Verse:

1 John 4:1 (ESV)
[SUP]1 [/SUP] Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Rejecting spiritual manifestations without testing them is disobedience to this verse.

Paul wrote to the Thessalonians,
'Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things. Hold fast to that which is good.'

Rejecting prophesyings, for example of the future or of specific details of someone's life, out of hand, is not proving all things. We are not to quench the Spirit. And we can apply to same reasoning to other aspects of Christian life.

Matthew 24:24-25 (HCSB)
[SUP]24 [/SUP] False messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
[SUP]25 [/SUP] Take note: I have told you in advance.

And thus you leave yourself WIDE OPEN to being deceived:
The one who rejects all prophesyings and prophets leaves himself open to being deceived, because Jesus also said that He would send prophets, in the chapter just prior to this one, and spoke well of the one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet. Acts tells of prophets that came after Jesus spoke these words. Joel prophesies of an outpouring of the Spirit accompanied by prophecy in the last days, the time period we are now in.

So we should expect true prophecy and false prophecy, true prophets and false prophets. That is why we need to discern. It is error to accept everything without testing. It is error to reject without testing, which is what cessationist belief systems teach people to do.

jaybird,

I don't see a 'prayer language' in scripture. I see the same sort of tongues that can be interpreted being used in prayer ('speak to himself and to God.) The benefit is that it builds up the one doing it. If the individual is giving thanks to God, He gives thanks well.

Both sides have stated their believes.
It is either a gift from God or a deception of the devil when people talk in unknown languages that no one can understand.

Speaking in languages (that you can't normally) that people can understand, so that the gospel can be understood is defiantly a gift from God.

1Pe 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
1Pe 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

The ornament of a meek and quiet spirit is of great price in the sight of God.

1 Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

1 Cor. 14:14,15 For if I pray in an tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, AND I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, AND I will sing with the understanding also.
The quote above by presidente has nothing to do with the 'gift of tongue' or 'unknown tongue', since Paul is conveying that praying in 'foreign language' is not fruitful. What Paul is saying is that whenever he pray or sing ie with understanding.

God bless

1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

If no one can understand keep silent.

1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
2Ti 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Avoid and shun profane and vain babbling.

Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Mat 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Mat 6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

You may think your babbling is from God but the scripture is clear that God prefers us to pray quietly to Him because He knows what we are thinking.

Speaking in languages (that you can't normally) that people can understand, so that the gospel can be understood is defiantly a gift from God.
I'm not saying God couldn't gift someone to do such a thing, but I can say I don't find any examples of this in the Bible.
