If you believe a country like America can feed and clothe its poor through charity alone, then you're deluded and naive. Neocapitalism thrives on fierce competition, and you think adding far-libertarian economic policies into that is justifiable because "nobody should get anything for free"?
That's cold and heartless even for a conservative.
You know just as well as I do that a culture like America won't see a decline in poverty if welfare is removed. Which leads me to conclude that your opinions herein are a product of at best wilful ignorance of the insidious nature of unfettered capitalism, and at worst intentional malice towards the needy, neither of which gives me great confidence in your character.
As far as "working so I don't have to", I've worked all my life. I still work. And I study. I pay my way. That doesn't mean I can't advocate for people who can't pay theirs. On a sidenote: you're approaching retirement age. Tell me, whose money will you be milking when you stop working?
Swings and roundabouts and glass houses, my friend. Don't bite the hand of the generation who are gonna feed you.

No one is against helping the poor or those not capable of helping themselves. Vets for instance. What conservatives are against is cradle to grave gov't care and handouts to people that abuse and rob the system.
I have a friend that is a sweet person, we're like sisters. She found herself single and alone when her husband left her. She's a single mom. I posted an article about abuses of welfare and govt handouts. She wrote me privately and was very upset. She said "why shouldn't my child be able to have cable tv? Why shouldn't I be able to get beer,or a tattoo?" I was shocked. I tried to kindly explain myself and she let it go. That is what Im against. Im not against people who need it.Ive been there, even though my family never took help and scraped by,I know what its like and Im all for helping those in need.
