I always thought the book of James to be somewhat legalistic myself. Not for the reasons that Romanstophilemon states though. It's because Paul confronted both Peter and James for hypocrisy.
Grace when understood correctly, needs to be guarded in our thinking from legalistic thoughts always trying to muddy the waters of life within us.
So for me, Paul's revelation needs to be uppermost in mind when reading other scriptures. I get caught way too many times off guard.
