I've always approached this question either by reiterating how my skills fit what the company is looking for (study the job description and emphasize those skills), or talking about what I will bring to the table to further the company mission.

For example, if i were going for a sales position, and asked why i should be picked, i'd probably say something like "I have xyz years of proven sales experience. I know how to sell. all i need is the right product/service in front of me...based on the offerings you provide, I know together we can drive increased profitability for xyz"
There's a million directions you can go in with a question like this.

I hate questions like that. What do they really expect people to say? Because I'm great? Because by hiring me you will be saving my life? Because if you don't I will be sad? 
Because I'm single so my attention is not divided I can focus on my job and I love your company so much that I want to get married to your company.

Because your company needs ____, and I've done that by _____. And your company needs _____, and I've done that when I was a ____ by _____.
Basically, learn who the company is, what the position is, and what skills you have to do that particular thing they're hiring you to do. Everyone likes to be known, so if you know enough about their company to prove you fit, it's a plus.
Also, another helpful hint for job interviews. After a job interview, send a Thank You note for the Interview. They may well have 100 people wanting that one job, but they'll remember the 1 out of 100 who sends a Thank You note.

Because I am not just looking for a job, I want a challenge... My challenge will be to make this company as great as I possibly can. Whether that be from making a customers experience rememerable from quick and painless service, or from helping peers attain achievements and mile markers to not only help the company prosper and move forward, but for them as well.
Why should you hire me? Because unlike many others that get jobs and become complacent after time passes them by... I take my job and set challenges to overcome, and my determination to complete these challenges will not falter over time.
(Summary: with this response you show initiative, dedication, confidence, team building, optimism, profit potential, understanding of different levels of job atmosphere, and a long term employee....)

Ok here's my real answer, Tinkerbell...
When they ask that question they probably want to know these two things...
1) what traits do you possess that makes you special (compared to the typical job candidate)
2) what makes you qualified for the job
For the first part you can tell them that you are a dedicated worker, willing to work overtime if necessary, you're organized, show up on time, pay attention to detail, get along well with others, etc...
For the second part of your answer you can tell them about your experience, responsibilities that you've taken on, tasks that you completed, etc..

Unless you're going for a team leader for a pharmaceutical sales team, that description of how you will fix everything won't go over well. It sounds like a used-cars salesman applying for a job.
I'm a hard worker, I'm reliable, I don't abuse sick leave, I'm easy to get along with, I'm not on drugs or bi-polar. 
Hey Tink ..I love this stuff. I believe the key to giving a great interview is to make yourself memorable. I know, easier said than done but I have done quite a bit of research into this subject matter for myself over the years. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat in more depth. In a nutshell:
As another user mentioned, Depleted I think. Research as much as you can about the company. However go beyond the standard, founded in year blah blah, and mission statement is blah blah...find nuggets of information that speak to you. Anything that would make you intrigued or proud to work there. XYZ company sponsored the special olympics this year and awarded gold medalists with 10,000 scholarships etc....
Now memorize the top 3 (at min) job responsibilities listed for the position
Then prepare to work into the interview either in the "what made you want to apply here" or "why should we hire you" portions your response. ..
"I made the decision 15 years ago to focus my career on XYZ field due to several factors but most notably ABC. I have done a significant amount of research into the top *10 hospitals/IT Companies/enter your field specific corporation here* noted for their *treatment of X/innovative software development/whatever your field is here* and discovered that *blank corporation* recently was awarded or won the innovators of the year award for blank. For this reason, I decided to focus on employment opportunities with XYZ corporation. You are seeking a X professional with experience in (insert at least 2-3 job responsibility bullets here). **Now provide an example of when you performed each job responsibility bullet you provided. "
You get the idea. Go beyond the "demographic" standard research the average interviewee, if any, do. It is critical though that whatever you decide to use, make sure you honestly believe in it.
There are exceptions to every rule but statistics show the average interviewer does not prep for an interview. All things being equal (experience, education, etc) this prep will make you memorable and stand out.
Always ask for a business card, if they do not have one ask secretary whomever to jot down their name, title and biz address. As other person mentioned ALWAYS send a thank you card that same day in the mail.
I am assuming you know the interviewing 101's: no perfume (people can have allergies), very subtle makeup, very little jewelry if any, 4 hard copies of resume and references, etc....

Thank you all for your replies. I've learned a lot. I don't really like interviews and have'nt really been to many interviews because I don't like to impress people but now I have no choice but to prepare for one. I am just worried about getting nervous and not knowing what to say because of it. *introvert problems
Thank you also for wishing me luck but I'm afraid they already have one in mind for the job and that the interview is just a formality, but still I will just do my best.
I dread job interviews too. Just remind yourself that they're not there to embarrass you or try to stump you on a question. They just want to know more about you. To get an idea of whether you're the type of person they would like to hire. 
A good thing to do is to make a list of all your strengths, weaknesses, acheivements, skills and qualifications (one list for each) and that should give you some quick points to refer to mentally when you're having an interview. Instead of just having an idea of your strengths, etc... list them on paper and it will make them easier to remember, rather than trying to remember what's on your resume.

Because God says you gotta give it to me!
Ages ago I was unemployed for a maybe 7 months. I prayed that if the jobs
i applied for were not right for me that I would not even get an interview.
Well I didn't get one interview for seven months, then suddenly I got that interview.
I walked into the place and was told they had already decided to employ me and just wanted to
meet me!
The next job I applied for, it must have been God because I honestly didn't think i
did that well in the onterview and I've been there ever since!
In fact looking back (apart for my very first ever interview when I didn't have a clue), I
always got the job upon teaching the interview stage. I'm really not that great at face to
face interviews, I blabber on and have no idea what to say, so it must all be God!

Oh one other thing I have realised over the years. Employers are just as keen to
give you a job and hope you will be some use, as you are.
They also get just as nervouse as you when it comes to interviews!
