I've lived most of my life right here on the waters of the Gulf, but I prefer the mountains.... NOT the people, however.
What was wrong with them?

I know this has nothing to do with the thread but I was born in Alabama! Jasper :) parents moved here when I was a baby ;) lots of family still there.

But hey I did like the book. Had to read in school ;) freaky and realistic for a worldly-ish book.
I've been through Jasper, but not spent time there. I know it's got some "iffy" parts, but most students in high school read the book, so I thought it would be okay- especially since it is referenced so much nowadays. I think it's good that we figure out for ourselves just exactly what Orwell meant in writing his book.

It's wild that both Conservatives and Liberals claim the book- surely both sides are not correct. I guess both sides see the other as detrimental to individual rights.

I believe my mom lived in Cullman and had me at a Jasper hospital. (I had to stay there a week, she drove to see me..which I know now was quite uneccesary but it's fine I'm alive) Her and her mom still live in Cullman. I am unsure where they are spiritually so I want to visit but there's a lot going on there... as a kid when we took road trips I would always "know when we got close to MeMe's because I smelled chicken houses" !!! May have changed now but yea. Childhood... !

I should read it again now that I am born again. I've enjoyed doing that with some things. I have only just been regenerate since 2011 (and was never introduced to/read / thought anything) of the Bible before then. So I haven't been able to stay out of it, and haven't been giving time to much else !

It is wise to know and understand what the world talks about. We see this from Paul clearly as he stands among idols even quotes their poets (writers?) ... "wise as serpents...harmless as doves"

If you don't want to read it, you can listen to it. It's a cautionary tale against totalitarianism, so not very pleasant reading.
It's not the reading part that bothers me, its just the very oppressing feeling that I got from the story.. My life is sad enough as it is lol.

There are many books written by Christians that are uplifting, of course not the same as the Bible. I heard a preacher say that when Sir Walter Scott was dying, he told his secretary to "fetch the book". His secretary wondered which one of his books the author wanted read to him. Scott told him, "When a man is dying, there is only ONE book."

And it is good to read things written by non Christians as a Christian. I was saved at twelve, so I naturally always read from a Christian's point of view from that age. There are many Christian themes in Dickens' books. In some classics, there are even conversions. For example, Defoe writes in Robinson Crusoe an episode where Crusoe reads a Bible and gets saved. It surprised me. Defoe was a Christian who wrote tracts, I found out later.

Yes, when Paul was preaching to the Greeks on Mars Hill, he noticed that the Greeks had idols consecrated to every possible god or goddess they could think of, and erected one to "the Unknown God", just to cover their bases. So, he told them about this unknown God. I can't imagine what it must have been like, to hear that sermon. Paul was highly educated, so I am sure he knew all about the gods and goddesses of Greece and Rome.

I haven't been to Cullman, that I know. I may have been through it, I'm not sure.

It's a sad book, that's for sure. Hopefully, people will choose a happier book the next go round if we continue reading. I have been meaning to ask you what the deal with your avatar is? What does it mean? Do you hate Japanese animated cats?

I have only been born again since April 2011. So coming up on 6 years. Weeks before I was 20. I hadn't ever cracked the Bible open (raised without any form of religion or teaching of God)

So I did a quick turn around once I actually began reading the Bible and was like wow...this is all true. And then I had a baby. That's over 3 of the 6 years I've been born again so maybe I'll get to do some extra reading soon! (Maybe!)

if anything I like to watch documentaries when little one goes to sleep. But they're mostly biblical. Ha! Being kept from it so long I feel "malnourished" and that there's so much to learn!

I grew up in a very good Bible believing church, so I was blessed with a good foundation. If you are not in a good church, I would suggest going to one to give baby a good foundation. I am surprised by some of the things my nephews and niece say about God. My niece has a white dress with red hearts on it. She told my sister that it was her "love one another" dress to wear to church. She is three, as well. Your daughter will bless you for it when she is older. Sunday School is kind of special.

If you like documentaries about the Bible and church history, there's a great series called Drive Thru History. The host is engaging, he travels around the world and describes what happened in each place he travels. Seeing the catacombs where Christians had to hide to worship the Lord was memorable.

Here's one about the Crucifixion. Some of the episodes are on youtube if you like this one. Even though I grew up in church, I remember when I was first saved and I read the Bible all the time, because my spiritual eyes were opened. I understood things I had not before understood- although heard about them all my life! So, I understand what you mean.

That's awesome. And thank you for sharing that!

We do attend church and I just got a job at one of the largest churches in our city. It was intimidating at first. But they seem solid I've listened to pastor. They do a lot in community. I'm in childcare so I keep kids for bible studies, events, MOPS and Mothers Day Out etc... my daughter gets to go and attend classes at no charge. It's been a huge blessing so far been there 2 weeks. Before that since she was born we attended a small church my husband's family goes to. I prefer his teaching over the one I now work for (because the small church pastor STAYS in the scriptures while this larger church pastor goes in and out, making other points but it's fine) both speak truth. She loves everything I get to take her to. She loves learning about Jesus and I hope one day she really comes to know Him..she prays and other things that, like you say bless my heart!

That's really beautiful to hear. I teach school, and I was speaking to one of the mothers after school one day. She was stressing about college and if her son gets in the right programs in high school, etc. Since she is a Christian, I told her that in the final analysis, the only thing that really matters is that he is saved (he is, by the way) and even if he works at McDonald's, the main job of a parent is raising their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It's a good perspective. Of course, I don't have children. :) It's always people without children giving people with children advice.

I read your other posts, and I want you to know I am praying for you. I know you are in a tough situation now, and need the comfort and strength of Christ. I'm not married, so I have no idea what you are going through- but I am praying. God bless you very much.

Thank you SO much. Even though God has strengthened me through this... since being on this site He has given me more peace. Talking to others is truly underestimated. I would love to live in a time/place where I walked barefoot and went to the well and market every day ... but I don't. And the home situation prevents much interaction in or out of home. So Internet and smartphone to connect with brethren ... I'll take it. :D

I feel like such a deceiver! You're the 3rd one to ask about it (others thought I drew it) It's just a photo of me with an arty filter! But if I had supplies / time I am confident I could reproduce it :D haha I have not been focused on art lately but I am an artist. I face paint and I have 2 pics of that art in my album. But I've painted over a thousand people at this point. I miss having quiet time w pen/pencil and paper though. I love black and white drawing.

That's really cool, I thought it was a painting! I wish I were artistic, but not a good artist AT ALL. I read that most people draw as if they were in the sixth grade and that made sense because in elementary school, children are asked to draw all the time. Once they reach middle school, drawing goes out the window.

I think you should draw if you get the chance. I believe it is supposed to be very therapeutic. If it is not too much of an intrusion, I am sure others would want to see some of your drawings. There is a thread on this forum called drawings and sketches. If it is too nosy of a request- don't worry. I have written poetry in the past, but am hesitant to post it here.

This is interesting to me. At a point in my life, I was quite introverted. Oh, I had enough well-developed Sociopathic tendencies, that it wasn't outwardly noticeable, but I never let my feelings show. (Now, I do too much.)

Anyway, during that period I constantly expressed myself in artistic outlets. I became a pretty good artist. As I outgrew that time in my life, I began to draw and paint less and less. Now that I am a chatterbox, I almost never even draw anymore.

Weird, eh?

I think it is probably an inborn need, the need to communicate. So, if a person is uncomfortable talking to people, he finds other ways to communicate, like through art.

The other thing I thought about art when I read that article is this: even small children who draw badly and have no talent like to draw. It is only when they are older and know they have no talent for drawing, that they stop drawing. I think that has something to do with it, too (my opinion, only of course).

yes Willie, it is weird,
you 'should' be expressing your 'spiritual-self' more than ever...what do you think is keeping you
from it, for it truly is a God-given-gift'...

I guess I do it now with my voice and my writing. (I'll show you some of my writing one day if I ever get up your way.)
