Hi guys,

I was wondering how many of you suffer severely with pain, sickness or disease?

And the prominant question I'd like answered is how much God and His word help you? And you can be honest.

There's no condemnation for anyone who finds other ways of dealing with pain. It's all good. Running my arthritic hands under hot water is a great help to me.

I'd also like to know how much the scriptures help you with the emotional pain that goes along with the physical pain. Again, no condemnation if you find other ways of coping?

I know some like to memorize scriptures. Other's put on praise music. Some do a bible study to get their mind off of the suffering. What is working for you?

Whatever helps you, I'd like to hear about it. I know not every suggestion will fit my situation, but it might help someone else on here. Maybe there's a way we can help one another out with chronic issues.

So how do you find relief, even if it's a small thing.

Just speaking in a natural way as I don't have any health issues but I have heard that taking lot's of omega 3's are helpful for arthritis as well as turmeric. I do both myself.

a good sermon on assurance with a hot water bottle and a cup of soup

I would invite you to read my blog on this site "My Heart Journey"..in short though, i had a near death heart attack in 1988..then a cardiac arrest in 2003 as i was driving down the road...a cardiac arrest is sudden death and without defirillators there is no survival...by miracle there was an ambulance filling with gas a block away and shocked my to life...i then had a defibrillator implanted which would automatically shock me each time that would happen which was several times while i still had it...in 2007, i had a heart transplant....that was over 9 years ago and it is still beating strongly...through it all, i never said "why me Lord"...rather I said "why not me Lord rather than someone who might not have the strength to withstand it...each moment of each day I am grateful to God...just to throw in a bit..i also had 9 sites of melanoma which were surgically removed and i've been free for over 8 years now...those events have not made me bitter at God but more closer than i could ever have imagined...going to post a few verses which i live by:

romans 5:1[h=3]Peace and Hope[/h]5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[SUP][a][/SUP] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, [SUP]2 [/SUP]through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[SUP][b][/SUP] boast in the hope of the glory of God. [SUP]3 [/SUP]Not only so, but we[SUP][c][/SUP] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; [SUP]4 [/SUP]perseverance, character; and character, hope. [SUP]5 [/SUP]And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Lot's of our physical problems are brought on by our lifestyles. The Lord can lead us to lifestyles that cause less, if any, pain.

I use a prayer shawl. It is not the physical shawl that repairs my soul and body, it is God but all my shawl symbolizes brings God close.

The shawl itself is of wool so natural it seems close to how God created the wool. It has the fringes and tassels that the Lord speaks of. What is important is that I sit in a kitchen chair at attention and drape it over my head with prayer. It closes out the world around me, only the Lord is near and He fills my very being. I listen and let His healing presence and His word take over my mind and body.

Please note I am a healthy, active 91 years old.

Long story short . . .

I once dated a girl who suffered from chronic depression. We parted ways but remained friends. I prayed for her often and one day I told God I would take her pain. Turns out she met the love of her life and I suffered from anxiety and depression for the next five years.

Then one day I remembered what I said to God and I told Him I had enough and wanted to be happy again. The transformation was immediate and I've never looked back.

Matthew 11:28-30 has always been my foundation with Jesus.

Wow, Dusty, what a miracle!!!

And thanks for the scripture. I'm studying 2 Timothy right now and it speaks a lot of suffering and it's helping me to grow more and more in trusting God with all things. We always look at cross references and there's lots said on sharing in the sufferings of Christ.

I'm trying to figure out how physical suffering through disease or sickness is sharing in Christ's sufferings. I always thought this was for ministry work where we're persecuted for being a Christian.

I'll check out your blog. I was planning to do a blog myself (Lord willing) on physical sufferings and how the Lord is always there with us as we suffer. My relationship with God has only grown deeper as I learn how to deal with the pain through His power.

Hi Blik, I never noticed you're 91!!! Fantastic!!!

I have bought a prayer shawl, but it's not wool and I haven't used it yet. It has fringes, but not sure about tassels.

I'm happy for you at your age to be so healthy. I have a friend who's 96. She has a pacemaker, and both knees have been replaced. But for the most part she's doing really well and still takes care of herself and still sees to her flower garden.

Been there done that. God works in truly mysterious ways!

Hi Utah, I prayed when I was a young believer that God
would take away my tears because I was embarrassed when I would tear up a bit when others shared their joys and their tears.

God allowed me to become hard hearted so I asked Him to bring back the tears. And He did. I'd much rather cry and have a soft heart instead of a hard heart that can't cry. What a lesson that was!!!

I'm happy to hear you're happy!!! I love that scripture too - “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

My uncle John was diagnosed with a very aggressive carcinoma a few years ago, He was raised on the Bible and as He got older He drifted away a bit, just before He knew He had cancer, i would go out to his home and visit and bring up faith He would not like to talk about it, i could see in the expression on His face and that He would always change the subject. after he was diagnosed and started experiencing alot of pain awhile after, i would go regularly and visit and He would start the scripture and faith conversations. he lastd only 18 months after His diagnosis, and i do believe the suffering he went through actually brought Him back close to the Lord and the scripture.

Im not sure it helped with His physical pain, but it sure did heal His soul near the end He was so full of Jesus and hope of eternal Things. I guess my point is that sometimes God uses our struggles and sufferings to break our hearts in order to save our eternal Lives. and i notice when talking to people with a serious illness, sin just kind of falls away because they focuse on things that truly matter, especially believers they turn thier eyes to the hereafter much more. im not sure this fits completely into the subject, but Gods word whether shared or read contains a living and true Hope that is much more geared toward the things that will last, on the other side of our sufferings whatever they may be. pain is a part of the journey Home and often it is part of the plan to get our eyesight corrected.

God bless

Hi, followjesus,

Oh yes, this fits in perfectly. I praise the Lord with you about your uncle. We so love our family and want them saved. What an honor for you to draw your uncle back to the Lord.

I've had the fibromyalgia for around 37 years and it brings me closer and closer to the Lord as it becomes worse. And as the pain increases, God is helping me to endure the pain more and more.

When our endurance is placed in the Lord, I'm finding that He's even helping to lessen the pain. It doesn't go away and the intensity is still there, but I've noticed that for each new day He gives me the strength to endure. When I'm down, He has lifted me up when I cry out to Him with His word open and praying out loud. Something supernatural begins to happen that I've never experienced before.

It's beyond
explanation. And I praise Him and rejoice that His promise to be with us always is definitely true. He doesn't leave us to deal with difficult situations on our own. Halleluyah!

I don't think Adam and eve knew the magnitude of what their disobedience brought.
Praise God that he did and made provision for each and every hurt we will ever encounter.

That's what my heart and eyes have been open to as this life's journey unfolds.
The loss of a child, broken heartedness, financial difficulties, sickness, dispare, loss of loved ones, loneliness, outcast. He is truly a good father and a merciful God. Loving us through all our hurts and afflictions. Helping and healing us through our sufferings.
Truly the Lord our God has made provision for each and every hurt we have.
What other God would collect our tears and place them in a bottle to remember our troubles?
What other God would send his only begotten, to free us from bondage while we were yet sinners?
What other God would offer us life everlasting above all we could hope for or ask?
There is no other only one, praise his holy name. His love is everlasting.
There is no hurt that heaven can't heal.

Hubby is a trouble-shooter. He can work out how just about anything works. He laughs at me. In my mind there are only two choices -- something works or it's broken and should be thrown out.

This is how it works with us and the Bible. I see what it says, but can't work it all out as one massive word, so I take what I can get, and figure I may get the rest some other time... (or not.)

One thing I marvel at is how people can study all the things the scripture says about pain, illness, and disabilities, and can get everything about it. I'm not one of those people.

Fortunately, and then there is Joni. At 17 years old, Joni dove into the water with her friends and rose face down in the water as a quadriplegic. She had to know the obvious question, "Why me, God?" And for the first six months after that day, she and Steve studied the scripture from beginning to end to figure it out. And they did. Better yet, years later they wrote a book about it. I can't make heads-or-tails out of what scripture says, but I did get the book.

Try When God Weeps. It answers the big question, "Why me, God?"

As for relief? Mine is my back. TENS unit stops the huge ache. Pain pills make the pain in the front lower enough that I can at least think and have a life.

Amen, Pottersclay,

So true! What a mighty God we serve!!!

My heart breaks for my friend who's 96. She's lived a very good life, but her knees are in such bad shape that she's in so much pain. They've both been replaced in the past. She can't take too many meds because she's allergic to most drugs. She can take tylenol, but that's not very strong for the kind of pain she lives with.

In fact, her Dr. almost killed her from medicating her to the point where she was throwing up for weeks before they even thought of the meds she was taking. She was so frail, this emaciated. I thought we were going to lose her.

I know that God is always there, but because we're human, we have moments where the pain or agony of life seem so unbearable.

I've decided to not even think that way and I'm taking one day at a time. But even that one day can at times be overwhelming.

But God is ever faithful and He is our comforter and I have experienced what I believe to be supernatural strength and endurance.

He has decided not to heal me so far, and He may never heal my body, but He does bring to my mind and body the ability to keep on keeping on. In our flesh we want to worry about the next day or even later in the same day instead of resting in Jesus in that moment.

I'm going to begin doing a scripture a day that will meet the needs of that day.......it might last a week or even a month. I'm just going to see how the Lord leads me.

For now it's this scripture. Maybe.....hopefully it will help someone else too.

Ephesians 3:14-21
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Thanks so much, Lynn!

I tried the TENS unit. It didn't work for me. :( The friend who loaned it to me has a bad back too and she has a few TENS units. That was so sweet of her to let me try it first before purchasing it.

My back keeps getting worse and worse. The Dr. said I have arthritis all down my spine. I have pain in the lower back and the middle part of the back and the neck is really bad. The Dr. says its time to see the surgeon, but I'm trying to put it off as long as possible. I have a friend who had to have her neck fused and wished she hadn't and recommended that I not do it. At the moment Boswellia extract capsules are giving me some relief for the neck.
I mostly have to suffer through without meds.

I walk to try to help strengthen the muscles. I need to include some exercises at home as well. A friend last week mentioned some stretching exercises she does online.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I think I may have read that years ago. I don't remember there being an answer to, why me. Was there?

I think she focused on glorifying God with your body no matter what you're going
through. Was that the book that talked about a man who was a friend that was bedridden for a long time. Like I said, it was such a long time ago I read the book. She is such an inspiration!

Maybe I need to read it again. I think I can fit it in with 2 bible studies going on at the same time. Each one takes 5 hrs per week of homework. They really help a lot to help me get through the difficult times.

Thanks so much for replying, Lynn. It helps to know others are out there in similar situations and their finding ways to cope with their pain and suffering. Hugs!!!
