I was just over on ChristianForums.com, and they announced that Hank Hanegraaff just became an Eastern Orthodox today.

I have no idea how true this is, but it set me to giggling. I hope they know what they got ahold of.

Two things that would put me off going orthodox are the Bushy Beard and Halloween Nightgown

I looked this up, and there were lots of sources saying this happened, including Greek Orthodox sources.

My grandparents were Orthodox, and the one thing I noticed was how important the Bible was to both of them. Orthodox were always encouraged to read the Bible, and because it was always in the vernacular. If people could read, they could read the Bible (Not like Catholics who needed to know Latin to read the Bible for centuries!)

However, having studied the Orthodox faith there are some big doctrinal issues here. Plus, although my grandparents were not like this, I have met quite a few North American Orthodox who say if you are not baptized Orthodox, you are not saved. That is the definition of "cult" to me!

Sounds like Hank had a crisis of faith, and retreated into ritualism and mysticism. The Orthodox Church is also very mystical! Very sorry for him, and his family he dragged along with him!

Since Eastern Orthodox is not really monolithic, we don't known what exactly this church believes. Although, they for the most part have huge doctrinal problems, including similar beliefs with Rome.

"That is the definition of 'cult' to me!"

More like apostasy than a cult. Rome is an apostate, not a cult like that of Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, etc.

Yes and in the end there's not a lot of difference between apostate and cult as they both end up lost forever in eternal flames

Is that REAL as opposed to plastic or cardboard ones?
REAL as opposed to nominal (in name only) Christians. There are genuine believers and there are make believers. ;)

I always liked him, or rather, the answers he gave on his radio talk show where people called in and asked questions. I wonder what happened. Are you concerned for him, or laughing at him?

We ought to examine ourselves as well, one of us could end up in the flames of hell even if we attend the right church.

After listening to him make fun of and condemn to Hell, so many other people (some who are personal friends and acquaintances)..... I'm mostly just amused. So, I would have to say "Yes, probably just laughing at yet another of his foolish antics."

Thanks for the article.

Please note, this article still does not give, or purport to give, actual confirmation.

This article states there are "numerous reports", and then shows a widely circulated picture, who could be any bald guy kneeling down.

* This article gives no actual confirmation, nor does it link to any confirmation, nor does it state there exists any confirmation of any kind in any particular place.

Conclusion:

1. Personally, I'm not a fan of Hank Hannegraaf.
2. Personally, it wouldn't surprise me, at all, if this is true.
3. But so far, there is still zero actual confirmation.

4. We might consider holding off discussion of a thing until it is an actual thing.

Note:

There is a link to a Facebook post... on a Facebook page that is not Hannegraaf's.

As I said above, if this story is true, it would not surprise me, and I'm not a fan.

However, we still have no reports from Hannegraaf himself, his family, his friends, his radio show, his research institute etc. etc.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hank Hanegraaff, also known as the “Bible Answer Man,” was chrismated into the Orthodox Church on Sunday, the well-known radio host and author has confirmed.A photo had been circulating since Sunday of the 67-year-old Hanegraaff being received into Eastern Orthodoxy at Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church in Charlotte, along with his wife and two of his children, prompting questions and online chatter.
On Monday, a listener to Hanegraaff’s radio broadcast called in to inquire if he had indeed converted to Orthodoxy. He advised that he has been attending Saint Nektarios for more than two years, but is just now becoming a member.

“I am now a member of an Orthodox church, but nothing has changed in my faith,” Hanegraaff said. “I have been attending an Orthodox church for a long time—for over two years, really, as a result of what happened when I went to China many years ago.”

He said that in witnessing the simplicity and passion of Chinese Christians, he was led to study Watchman Nee and theosis (a teaching of the Eastern Orthodox regarding union with God) and felt drawn to the days of the early Church.
“I saw Chinese Christians who were deeply in love with the Lord, and I learned that while they may not have had as much intellectual acumen or knowledge as I did, they had life,” Hanegraaff explained. “I was comparing my ability to communicate truth with their deep and abiding love for the Lord Jesus Christ.”
“One man … said to me, ‘Truth matters, but life matters more.’ In other words, it is not just knowing about Jesus Christ; it is experiencing the resurrected Christ,” he said. “As a result of that, I started studying what was communicated by the progeny of Watchman Nee with respect to theosis and that drove me back to the early Christian Church.”

Hanegraaff says that since then, he’s “been impacted by the whole idea of knowing Jesus Christ, experiencing Jesus Christ, and partaking of the graces of Jesus Christ through the Eucharist or the Lord’s Table.”
I copied this from christiannews.net
There is more to the article, but this sort of hits the high spots....
