A link recently circulated about 'why you should close facebook'.
It would be interesting to hear some opinions from a Christian's perspective as to WHY so many people are addicted to facebook and is it truely a necessity in the world of technology and global connections?
How is it affecting YOU, are you benefiting from it, or has it had negative influence on your family life or friendships? Do you feel safe using it?

I use Facebook to communicate quickly to relatives, KLTY christian radio and minister around the world. I feel it saves me time that I can use to spread God's word and normally would take forever. So class me in the "Yeah I use it alot" category....

Hmmm....

good questions there, I dont know whether its good or bad, we are like lambs as humans, we just follow eachother in MANY ways, and facebook...well, I only signed up to it cos other people kept asking me.
The thing I find hard is that my parents are on the "its a total waste of time" team, so I sometimes find Im hiding stuff from them..like, say if I changed my status to "FED UP WITH LIFE".....and didnt tell them how I felt, Id feel kinda guilty. but most parents have it, so thats not the main prob.
I think scientists fear that these websites are fantasy not reality... yknow? Like, we're not going out and MEETING some of these `friends` ....but in my op, most of the friends we have on there are our real life friends... except for those people who you think "theres no harm in accepting that friend of a friend"...
I dont know, but in my op, as long as we all have a balanced social life in real AND online life[lol..] we're OK. I mean, look what CC has done, it has attracted many of us.......mainly cos of the webcam/sound device :D

sorry for my essay btw haha...just my opinion.

This is very important.

There is enough spying done on us already, voluntary means (facebook) should be avoided. I post very little about myself on the internet, so others can't use it.

...maybe if I didn't spend 4 hours a day reading the bible I could get rid of facebook and actually call one of my sisters or brothers, hmmm! Haha I'm just kidding. Point is facebook keeps me connected in my busy life so I'm going to keep it unless I find out they are funding abortions or petitioning for like sex offenders or something. Facebook takes up a total of like 10 minutes a day for me so I'm not so worried.

As for privacy I have all my stuff set up so only friends can see, I don't get that personal anyhow and I'm just generally not worried.

P.S. Yeah 4 hours a day, I think I'm addicted to God :)

I use facebook for work. I work in the media/entertainment industry, and it is pretty much a must. I think if people have their own personal problems/addictions to facebook then that is their own problem . Yet to make a blanket statement like "Christians shouldn't have facebooks" seems super ignorant. if you're worried about identity theft or what not, wear gloves when you handle money, don't work for any kind of corporation, don't pay your taxes, don't use a bank, and don't do anything that might possibly get your name out including going to church. We are supposed to be in the world, take advantage of the tools and resources that it gives you.

Just my humble thoughts...

I'm not totally addicted to facebook, though it is a pretty large part of life (hey, I'm a kid, not much better to do XD). I've moved all over since I was a kid, and I have a TON of great friends spread out across 3 different states. Facebook is a nice universal place to keep in touch with them =) I can also talk to more than one at once, since I'm a computer whiz and can type pretty quick and keep track of many conversations at once.

Of course, as it's been states, it should NEVER replace communication offline. If you CAN talk to someone offline, then it's best to do most of your associating there whenever possible. Basically, don't reject a request to go out and do things with friends, because you're totally content at home on the computer all day. That's taking it a little to the extreme, and is likely unhealthy =/

I dont use facebook. Not because I think its bad or anything like that. I just see no need for it when I can just use my own personal email to email my out of town friends that I meet when Im travelling. Its basically the same thing so I dont need another 'email' program like facebook.
For my friends that live in my city, I just use my cell phone to keep in contact with them. Calling or text messages to hang out and such.
Like I said earlier, facebook is fine but for my own use..I see no reason for me to use it.
People lived perfectly fine before facebook even existed. I'll survive without facebook.

ironic that your favorite verse is

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind

I use facebook and post daily Bible quotes and songs. Sometimes that is the only time people in my network read any words directly from the Bible. Some are not yet Christian. If you would pray for them it would be greatly appreciated.

My friends and family are connected and post whats going on and we share things. If people spy on us we believe in what Jesus told us: Do NOT HIDE YOUR LIGHT behind any thing. I put my trust in God and if people wanted to harm me Satan would send them in person. A druggie was banging on my bedroom window a month ago and if my husband was at work during night shift like he normally is, I don't know what would have happened. However God looks out and protects us if we trust in His love and goodness and remember to pray to HIM to be saved or for HIM to tell us how to act and respond to things.

I haven't read anyone else response, hope everyone remember God's words: Be NOT Afraid!

I'm rethinking my Facebook usage. Not because I'm on it all the time. But I've been noticing it doesn't build me up. The "fellowship" I have on Facebook is not Christian. I think I'll start limiting my usage to maybe once or twice a month.
