*BUMP* a thread to go along with the "how did your parents meet" thread.
=========================
My first wife--a non-smoker--died of lung cancer at a relatively young age, leaving me a single parent with a sixth grade daughter. After caring for my wife during two years of cancer treatment, I wasn't really looking to date anyone else for quite a while. Instead, I just needed a change of scenery. So I decided to move to a new state. I bought a house in the Midwest, loaded up a moving truck, and moved all the rest of my possessions into storage. On my last weekend in my old house I held an open house hoping to sell it.
A new couple had moved into the house across the street a few months earlier. I knew them by sight, but didn't know them well. They wandered across the street to my open house. The woman's sister tagged along. I talked to the woman's sister for about a half hour while the new couple explored my house. We hit it off real well. But I thought to myself, "too bad, I am set to move a thousand miles away tomorrow." Nonetheless, we kept in touch by email and telephone. Two months later she was in the Midwest for a speaking engagement at an alumni event about 100 miles from my new home. I traveled to hear her speech. It was our first date.
We dated from afar for nine months, communicating mostly by phone and email. Then nine months later we eloped to the Virgin Islands. She quit her job and moved to my new home to join me and my daughter. Nine and one-half months after we got married we had a baby boy! He's in the first grade now. I am blessed.
