I've lived in a place like that for 10 years here in Canada.
I was bought up in what was once known as the roughest place in Europe.
When someone held a knife to your throat and said "Bit of friendly advice, give me your wallet and I won't stab you" You hoped he was friendly, friendly behind they would not stab you.
The estate I lived on there was an average of 3 rapes a week.
After 6 no one walked the streets.
My mum was bought up in the worst of the times.
She learned how to fight.
No lie but she is about 5ft, she mixed with the wrong sort and learned.
In her alcohol fuelled years I have seen her at her worst.
I never knew my father, only my step father. An army man. He liked his drink as well.
So when both drunk it was a cocktail of disaster.
She took him down every time, very vicious and I've seen her take many a person down.
That was my childhood experience.
In fact in the bad old days it would not be unusual for me to be given a beating that was quite severe, my dad When to hit my mum and missed her but broke my nose. Was in hospital for days.
One day I upset my mum she smacked me on the nose and gave me a black eye.
I thank Jesus that my mum is now saved, not the woman she was.
So it's not different where I lived and live.
