God makes a distinction between these two categories of people. If you try to merge the two categories in verse 8, then the scripture no longer makes any sense. For "those who do not know God" could not have obeyed the gospel anyway, because they never received it in the first place.

So no, those who do not obey the gospel are those who were happy to receive Jesus as Savior, but would not inconvenience themselves to receive Him as Lord (Master).

Hi Chris,

You make a very concise statement concerning that fact that <goats> "are those who were happy to receive Jesus as Savior, but would not inconvenience themselves to receive Him as Lord (Master)".

To me, those who do not confess Jesus as Lord are not saved:

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

If the goats never confess Jesus Christ as Lord, they are unbelievers and are the same as "those who do not know God <unbelievers>".

So I believe your statement that "trying to merge the two categories in verse 8, then the scripture no longer makes any sense" is not correct.

they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment.

They did confess Jesus as Lord (so your statement above is incorrect). Look at verse 44 below.

[SUP]41 [/SUP]“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: [SUP]42 [/SUP]for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; [SUP]43 [/SUP]I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

[SUP]44 [/SUP]“Then they also will answer Him,[SUP][b][/SUP] saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ [SUP]45 [/SUP]Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ [SUP]46 [/SUP]And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

2 Thessalonians 1
the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, [SUP]8 [/SUP]in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. [SUP]9 [/SUP]These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, [SUP]10 [/SUP]when He comes, in that Day,

- When Jesus came to the world, he came as a Saviour
- When He returns, He returns as a Judge
- Those who are judged will fall into two categories
a)
Those who do not know God (these are unbelievers who either never heard the Word, or heard the word and rejected it)
b)
Those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (these are ones entrusted with the Word but lived their lives after the flesh and not being led by the Spirit. Their lives are characterised by disobedience.
- Both these categories of people have their portion in the lake of fire.
- in particular, we see scriptures from the words of Jesus himself in Luke 12v46 [SUP]46 [/SUP]the master of
that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
- we also know that those above
who do not obey the gospel as the same ones whom Jesus refers to in Matthew 7v23 [SUP]23 [/SUP]And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

As above in Luke 12v46 - we see the servant of the Lord (a servant is he who should obey his Master) being judged for his wickedness (disobedience) and being assigned his portion with the unbelievers in hell.

So the two categories stand on their own merits perfectly. And is supported by the rest of scripture.

You indicate "those who do not obey the gospel are those who were happy to receive Jesus as Savior, but would not inconvenience themselves to receive Him as Lord (Master)".

To me, there is a difference between a person who wants Jesus to be Savior, but who do not "inconvenience themselves to receive Him as Lord". To me, these have not confessed Jesus is Lord and are, therefore, not born again so they remain unbelievers.

That is why I think the ones who "know not God" (those you refer to as unbelievers) are the same as those "who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ" (those you refer to as goats). They are all unbelievers.

Isaiah 29
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Therefore the Lord said:

“Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths
And honor Me with their lips,
But have removed their hearts far from Me,

They are in the Church. Sing the songs. Pray the prayers. Call Jesus Lord. But their hearts are far from Him.

These are the goats.

We don't know that those who have never heard the Word have their portion in the lake of fire. Won't there be a judgment concerning these?

I understand about those who heard and rejected, but I am not so sure about those who have never heard the Word. I believe God will be Just and Righteous toward those who never heard (imho).

I believe Jesus makes clear that He never knew those He tells to depart from Him. So we can conclude that they were never believers (again imho).

Right. I understand. There is a difference between people who want Jesus as Savior (everyone wants Jesus to be Savior) and those who want Jesus as Lord (not everyone want Jesus to be Lord in their life). Sad, really, because He is so Wonderful!!!

Unfortunately for them they are all in Adam. Born into sin. Their consciences witnessing against them.

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men

Those who draw near to God with their mouth but who have removed their hearts far from Him are taught fear (reverence) toward God by the precept of men. Interesting ...

I don't think that Jesus will be your Savior unless you also accept Him as Lord. At my salvation experience God told me that I had to accept Jesus as Savior and from that moment on I had to live for God. Living for God meant that Jesus became the Lord as far as my life was concerned.

Exactly. Those who think they can have Him as Savior without having Him as Lord will have neither.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Two requirements –

  • confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord. This is more than just mumbling the words. It is agreeing with God that Jesus is, in fact, Lord. That is what God's Word declares throughout (from Genesis to Revelation).

  • Believe in your heart that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.

"Now Lord, what does Your Lordship require of me, your servant?"
For starters ---

Matthew 11:

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Why weren't these people saved by what they did?

Matthew 7:22 ►
New International Version
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?'
Because they didn't treat their neighbor as themselves. The golden rule, 2nd commandment of Christ.
