Its interesting that you say Darwin had no evidence of evolution taking place. I was homeschooled so I learned biology from a christian perspective. The book talked about Darwin and the discoveries he found. He was on an island of some sort I believe, and while there he recorded finches and how some had different beaks and such. Ironic thing is he had gone to seminary and was taking a break to record nature while on a certain ship. So he did discover that birds evolve within their kind. He then took that truth and stretched it saying that animals evolved from one kind to another which there is simply no evidence of that.
And if one wants "proof" of where I got that from I got it from apologia biology.

If you breed puffins. On no account will one puffin change into a different bird. If it were possible one could interbreed two species but this in itself is interbreeding and not evolution. Evolution is one breed by itself changing to adapt to its surroundings by changing its form and becoming an entire new species. Interbreeding is different. It is like taking a horse and a donkey and getting a mule. We all know what happens when we further breed from the results of interbreeding. They die out quickly.
A funny one I heard somebody say is when about 20 years ago whales were beaching on shores in Scotland. Conservationists came out in force to try to push the poor things back into the sea. Someone said "What are they doing? They are trying to become human!"
Evolution to work as a theory needs a very large time zone to work. Hence why millions rather then thousands of years are mentioned.
