Call it sacrilege, but my favorite version of this song is actually NOT Simon and Garfunkel. Horrifying, I know! I really think these guys do a good job, though. When I first heard it I thought it was one guy separately recording both vocal parts, because they sounded so closely interwoven. It is actually in a higher key than the original.

Grrrr..... lol
That's not a bad version though...

Blue Velvet.........................
Not to young to remember it. I just hadn't hit my record-buying phase yet.

I just realized something. I consider us the same age, but when I was young, you were old enough to babysit me. You were that ever-fascinating group I couldn't quite understand, but wanted to be when I grew up -- the teenager.

............. Miss American Pie.

I wish they had made an MTV video of that song. I have so many images of where I was when that song was big, what my brain conjured up when I heard the words, and so many feelings and emotions whirling around. I would have love to see Don McLean's artistic version of it on MTV years later.

My first imagine is still my cousins (who are, in the good sense of the word, rednecks), sitting up on a dyke with coolers of ice cold Millers on the beat-up old flat bed, watching the sunset and reminiscing of just this topic -- old songs they loved and the singers who sang them. I can even hear the cicadas in the background and watch them slapping mosquitoes. Funny thing -- never happened just like that. That's all the main image of that song.

We did that a few times, but never on a levy.

It's after midnight
And something evil's lurkin' in the dark
Under the moonlight
You see a sight that almost stops your heart.
Hmmm, thought you'd go for Michael Jackson's Thriller, instead. lol

(Watch Bobby when he starts the song. Too funny how "regular old man" turned into something else entirely. lol)

There's a story behind the song.

video removed because CC doesn't like two videos in one post. lol
I never placed Bobby as the jester. (Now that I think about it, why didn't I?) Most of those other images also come to my mind with that song.

I became friends with a women who went to Kent State. I asked her the obvious question because that's when she went to Kent State. She was friends with one of the four. Four kids -- two protesting, two going to class. She was friends with one going to class.

I was always for that war, until the time when Congress played footsies with the money intentionally letting our guys die for nothing.

Did you know we won it? Nixon made a treaty that we would stop sending the troops, but keep sending the arms and money to keep fighting it. And because of that, North Vietnam came to the tables and signed the treaty to surrender. Why didn't we win that war? Because when Nixon resigned, Congress reneged on their promise and the communists were then free to take the whole damned place. Congress caused the Killing Fields.

And for any of the younger people who don't understand what I'm talking about with Kent State, here is the song from the left's perception.

College kids were protesting the VN War on the Kent State campus. The National Guard was brought in to stop rioting. National Guard was the same age as the kids protesting -- 18-22. So two young and naive groups faced each other. Someone freaked out. A gun shot. And that!

Considering what's happening on campuses today, I'm kind of stuck between that scene in my head and all the muggings that are allowed to happen during the riots today. Who shoots first? Because doing nothing isn't working either.

Everyone here is talking about 70's or 90's music or something idk while I'm just sitting here, listening to things like:

I didn't know that I was that much of an outsider here...
You're not the outsider. You're the insider. You're it! The future. Our hopes and fear. Readying yourself to leave your mark on the world. We're not too fearful because you've already been marked. (Saved by God.)

What you're seeing is folks remembering when we were you. This thread really is for everyone because I knew no one has the same memories, we're all at different stages in our lives, and I want to see where you (the younger folks) pick up, while we older folks wind down.

You're still part of that group that is both a mystery and something I want to be when I grow up -- a teen. I just struggle realizing I'm not that anymore. But, hey! It was a blast when I was. (At least, those are some of my favorite memories. lol)

I really am interested in what's going on with the younger folks nowadays, and you're supplying that interest. So, you are on the inside. I'm on the outside now. That doesn't mean I'm not interested about the insiders. Just seeing it from a different perspective and reminiscing.

Huh, I only knew there was a plane crash in which a bunch of artists died and he was a sad paperboy lol
American Pie is something like reading Alice in Wonderland. You can take it at face value, or you can dig in to catch deeper meanings. And, frankly, it looks like the writers never wanted us to figure out how much deeper meaning they got out of the writing either. lol

This thread makes me nostalgic...lol.
LOL I am so curious what a 16 year old considers "nostalgic." (No. Really. What year is "the olden days" to you? Because for me it's before 1960, and I'm sure that's "the ancient days" to you.)

...

...Hey.

That's some quality lyrics you got there.
It might help you to know, I'm not remembering Blue's lyrics any better than you. But, hey! She's young, so what do I know of all this new stuff? lol

And Natania is talking the 1980's as the oldies, and to me that is "the new stuff." lol

I hear the clock tick and think of you
Caught up in circles, confusion is nothing new.
Flashbacks, warm nights, all those left behind.
Finally! Something I know! Cyndi Lauper. Time After Time. (I don't feel so old now. lol)

"She's a rich girl." "She don't try to hide it, ________________ ."

She has the amazing ability to use her voice just right and also act the part in variable different songs. Time after time is a classic.

That was my moms ringtone forever.....

Random fun story...her phone rang in the middle of a ladies funeral once. I've rarely wanted to disown her as much as I did in that moment. Shockingly everyone in the place laughed.
That's almost my anthem. If I was having a funeral, that would be the perfect song for me. Because by then, I'm already having the most fun ever! (With God eternally.)
