Fortran was the first 3GL then COBOL then Basic
There is at least one Insurance company in Australia still using COBOL
They never let on - they show you all their hi tech screens
in the old days their operators would put on a telephone headset and read the screen and type in figures
now VBA applications "screenscrape" the screen and "sendkeys" for input
but at the back it is still CICS COBOL from the 1980s running on DB2 i think
they had a 25 Million Dollar project a few years ago to change the number of fields for their individuals super funds from 11 characters to 13
