It can indeed be a hindrance to the gospel especially in this day and age where people are more educated and more skeptical.

Many people are not educated in biblical matters. Many Christians who think they are educated are skeptical of speaking in tongues. If they were educated, they would not be.

I find it so interesting that tongues became so prevalent after 1909, in the United States (Topeka Kansas), as in unintelligible speech, and before that for hundred of years was not practiced in the churches.

I hope that the Christian church comes to understand what speaking in tongues is, know that they can do it, and do it more than ever before.

That should be an indication right there that it is not an angelic language.

Tongues can be either a language of men or of angels (1 Cor 13:1).

It has been studied extensively by linguists. The neurosciences is pretty clear it releases endorphins.

This high emotional state is nearly always present when people begin to speak in modern tongues for the first time and afterward in their emotional "worship services and practice of modern tongues. People are susceptible to a suggestion which stimulates a mental response. When the person is having a stimulating emotional experience, whatever the source, it often produces a pleasant feeling. Scientists tell us that the body releases endorphins and other chemicals that are natural pain killers, and they give one a natural "high" or pleasant feeling.

Where do people get the idea that people who speak in tongues are highly emotional, or that speaking in tongues makes people emotional? Why do people sometimes call it "ecstatic languages"? People can speak in tongues in whatever mental state they happen to be in, whether joyful or not. Speaking in tongues does not make a person emotional or giddy.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues. They reported the activity came from the frontal lobes of the brain,". . .and found the frontal lobes; the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do; were relatively quiet, as were the language centers. The regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were active. 5

That "Bible-truth" website does not know Bible truth. It's just another cessationist website speaking against things they do not understand. They're a dime a dozen.

It is significant that what these women were doing was not speaking in an unlearned language. The language center of their brains was inactive, but the phenomena of modern tongues speaking was being produced by the emotional region of the brain.

I'm sorry, but that's just a crock of kaka. Speaking in tongues is produced by an act of the will, not emotion. A person makes a conscious decision to speak in tongues, and he begins speaking. The words come from the gift of Holy spirit. A person does not need to be emotional or joyful to speak in tongues.

I do not understand why so many Christians simply do not believe what the Bible says. They go out of their way to find websites that discredit speaking in tongues, and go with that rather than what the Bible says.

Acts the 19th chapter outlmovesines the way God moves. First these men believed. Then they were Water baptized. Then Paul laid hands on them and they received the gift of the Holy Spirit and spake in tongues.

In my case I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and received the gift of tongues before I was Water baptized. Jesus came and saved me outside of church. I was not going to church and had no desire to go. All I ever saw from church people was coldness and DEAD RELIGION. The "visitation" people would come from time to time and invite us to CHURCH...but not one not once did any of them tell me anything at all about Jesus or His love for me.

So Jesus came HIMSELF praise be to God! Then He baptized me in the Holy Spirit and at the same time gave me the gift of tongues. I'm beyond grateful that the good shepherd came for me. I owe all my very being to Him... Not to some denomination.

It seems like when a person is saved under a certain denomination they cleave to it rather than putting God first place. That's why I grow more thankful every day that Jesus saw fit in his wisdom to come get me Himself.

I'm going to post a dream the Lord gave me about the deceit, coldness and deadness found in many of the pharisaical denominations that are ruled by the dictates of religion rather than the wonderful liberty of the Holy Spirit. The Ceramic Lamb is the dream.

Following are many scriptures pertaining to the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues. They are self evident to an honest hearted person. The Intercessory prayer call shown in the Scriptures of Job chapter 32:18-20 are experienced by many that don't realize they are a call to prayer in the spirit until the call is complete.

I believe "that which is perfect" refers to the New Jerusalem that will descend to earth when the new heaven and earth get here (Rev 21:2ff). The city "whose builder and maker is God." (Heb 11:10).

I do not believe it refers to "the completed canon of scripture" as so many do (particularly cessationists).

Yes, the church at Corinth had many problems.

1 Corinthians is the only record we have where Paul corrects the church on the operation of the manifestations of Holy Spirit.

I believe that the knowledge, use, and practice of the manifestations was so well known and commonplace in the first century church that nothing needed to be said to the churches at Rome, Galatia, Ephesus, etc.

Teleios is applied to both people and things. New Jerusalem will be "the completeness".

I do not believe the manifestations of the Holy Spirit have ceased. I believe they are just as applicable to the church today as they were ~2000 years ago. But for the most part they are ignored, forgotten about, and written off as having "ceased".

In Galatians 1:8 we read ... 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

One cannot be pro-God the Father, pro-Jesus, God's only Son and not be pro-Holy Spirit. The three are inseparable. Many of us simply don't believe that today's "tongue speakers" are speaking an angelic or heavenly language. What languages were heard at pentecost in Acts 2 ? ..... "we hear them speaking in our own native tongue wherein we were born". Can't dust that off your heels.

Paul is praying while speaking in tongues as manifested by the Holy Spirit that someone else will interpret the tongue so that he may understand that tongue for that tongue to be fruitful even to himself.

So while you took Paul praying in tongue as is, without taking all the other verses in context, I read it as Paul is praying for himself while he is speaking in tongues as manifested by the Holy Spirit that someone else may interpret the tongue.

Tongues was never meant to be inferred as a prayer language of the Holy Spirit's or yours.

The point of speaking in tongues is not to understand what you are saying.

No... Paul was not ever really teaching that. I disagree with you. aul prayed that someone else may interpret that tongue for that tongue to be understood and thus fruitful to himself as a tongue speaker.

Why when Paul say if any are zealous for spiritual gift, to seek the gift of prophesy. you bold that part of the verse in ignoring what Paul was saying below as I underlined it for you to see for why believers are to seek the gift of prophesy.

Verse 2 & verse 17 is why Paul was telling people to seek the gift of prophesy when zealous for spiritual gifts but only the Lord can help you see that in context of what Paul is saying from verse 1.

wow ! I would be very careful how one speaks about the Spirit of the Living God . The Holy Spirit is God and the Lord Jesus would never speak so loosely about the Holy Spirit .

Jesus in John 14 chapter and 16 speaks reverently . To be pro Holy Spirit is to be Pro God and the Lord Jesus was pro Holy Spirit . Very troubling to see such speaking about the Spirit of the Living God.

Despite the hymnals and the Nicene creed that teaches to worship the Holy Spirit with the Father & the Son, God as God is only glorified by way of the Son.

That was how the holy laughter movement went across the denomenations across the nation of USA in 1994 just as Promise Keepers' movement went across the nation into all the denomenation churches in that same year.

Why would God allow that to happen? Because they did not heed His words about how to come to God the Father in worship, fellowship, & prayer ad that is by the only way of the Son.

Can any believer afford to doubt His words when the repercussion is being left behind at the pre trib rapture to be received later on after the great tribulation as a vessel unto dishonor in His House for not departing from the iniquity of coming to God the Father by the broad way rather than by the only way of the Son?

Keeping our eyes on Jesus because the Bridegroom is coming soon for the abiding bride of Christ is the call to heed in these latter days where faith is hard to find..

The role of the Holy Spirit is sent to dwell within us to lead us into honoring the Son by testifying of the Son to glorify the Son, and thereby honoring & glorifying God the Father. There is no other way to be His disciples in honoring God as led by the Spirit which is to be Pro Jesus aka the Bridegroom.

Despite the hymnals and the Nicene creed that teaches to worship the Holy Spirit with the Father & the Son, God as God is only glorified by way of the Son.

When believers broaden the way in the worship place and worship the Trinity or the Holy Spirit directly, then seducing spirits come in with signs and wonders, causing many to believe that was the Holy Spirit since they were addressing Him in worship.

That was how the holy laughter movement went across the denomenations across the nation of USA in 1994 just as Promise Keepers' movement went across the nation into all the denomenation churches in that same year.

Why would God allow that to happen? Because they did not heed His words about how to come to God the Father in worship, fellowship, & prayer ad that is by the only way of the Son.

wow ! I would be very careful how one speaks about the Spirit of the Living God . The Holy Spirit is God and the Lord Jesus would never speak so loosely about the Holy Spirit .

Jesus in John 14 chapter and 16 speaks reverently . To be pro Holy Spirit is to be Pro God and the Lord Jesus was pro Holy Spirit . Very troubling to see such speaking about the Spirit of the Living God.

I was referring to his previous testimony of wonderment in another thread when the Holy Spirit fell on him long after he had been a believer in Jesus Christ. That was when he spoke in tongue, even though he had been asking for that gift before that incident......

So I said he was following tongues as signs and wonders. That is not the same thing as following the Holy Spirit or Jesus.

I had quoted scripture in how God the Father wants us to honor Him by... and those led by the Spirit will be doing that.

Address the scripture in the OP you had replied to if you believe I am applying them in the wrong way. I pray you will ear His words if not for the first time in how God the Father has shown His will in the only way to honor Him so as to call sinners away from their spirits and worship of spirits to come to Him by the only way of the Son in being reconciled to the Father by.
