Some back pain is muscular, some is mechanical and muscular.

Best thing to do is rest for 24 hours and apply something cold or ice in a pack
to reduce any inflammation for short periods of time. If you try to push yourself
too early you will make it worse.

Then next day try walking around a little bit every hour to get your muscles working, otherwise
you will just stiffen up too much. Gradually add some light stretching exercises
and also try heat at this point and maybe alternate between heat and cold to see
what works the best.

If it's very mild muscular problem then it should be ok after 2-3 days.
If it's bad muscular spasms, you are looking at around a week to ten days.

If its mechanical as well, like a slipped disc, sciatica etc, it will soon become apparent
as the above and normal pain killers just won't work. If no improvement after a
week or it gets worse, then see a doctor.

I've experience all the above levels of back problems, once it gets to the mechanical
stage, it's just agonising.

One thing I discovered is my back was generally weak. Also one side was stranger
than the other. Which made me more prone to back problems and muscle spasms
when twisting and turning at certain angles.

So ive been doing some exercise to improve my posture and strengthen both
sides of my back. Making sure I strengthen both sides together.

It really has made a massive difference, Im also more aware of my posture now and
the effects of slouching too much.

Use this as warning that you have a problem and do something about it now to
correct it, and strengthen your back when you feel fit enough. But don't over do it
build up gradually.
otherwise you could pull your back again and it will get weaker and
worse.

Hope you are feeling better soon. :)

Soooo? How ya doin'? Back any better?

And, for future reference, what saves a back from this is exercising. (I know! Me! Advocating exercising, despite how much I HATE exercising! lol) Back muscles, hamstrings, thighs, abdominal muscles, and lats all need to stay in shape to keep the spine in place. Annoying, ain't it? (Assuming no one likes exercising. lol)

Good news on back exercises. Most of the ones I do don't even look like I'm moving. Looks more like I'm trying out for the Olympics in Concentrated Lying Down or Concentrated Standing. lol

I know that this is a 'repeat', but, it WORKS for us, we get on the BALL, one of those
exercise-balls, we 'blow it up to about 'twice' it size, and 'stretch-stretch-stretch', at
your own comfort levels, plus, always have a place to put your legs and/or arms for
balance, like the couch or a chair - this has worked wonders for the both of us...
not always comfortable at first, but when you learn how to 'slowly relax' those muscles
and find your balance, you WILL get results, if you don't give-up...
look, at our age, it takes 'courage'...:)

One of the exercises I found really helpful, was to lie
on your back on the floor. Bend your knees and get comfy, then with the
backs of your hands facing downwards touching the floor. Reach up as high as
you can with your arms above your head, keeping the backs of your hands touching the
floor for as much as you can and also your shoulders.

You might find that at first you can only stretch your arms half way up before you
cannot keep your hands/shoulders on the floor. But over time you end up being able to
stretch your arms right up above your head.

It helps with posture as it eliminates those round shoulders which in turns pulls
you up straighter. It also puts minimal strain on your back while doing this exercise.

Its so simple but effective.

yeah, for youngsters like yourself, no, really, this sounds good for certain age groups -
I, ms, do most of my exercising in bed, before I get up...don't go there...
there are so many different ways to stretch and loosen-up without the stress
of a hard surface...especially with your hips and legs, and then with some
light-weight weights that you can hold in your hands without hurting your
shoulders to much, if you have any problems with them...I'm done...:)
