The Hebrew for "obelisk" is (מַצֵּבָה). It is translated as "pillar" or "images" in most translations of the Bible. An obelisk is a sacred stone or pillar. The word “obelisk” does not occur in the King James or in many other translations, but it does occur in the Jewish Tanakh and the New American Standard Bible (NASB).
"And I shall set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will depart from there safely. He will also shatter the "obelisks" of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.”
(Jeremiah 43:12-13 NASB)
"But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, (obelisks) and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire." (Deuteronomy 7:5 KJV)
"And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image (obelisk) of Baal that his father had made." (2 Kings 3:2KJV)
"Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images (obelisks) in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities." (2 Chronicles 31:1)
Why would a nation claiming "in God we trust" and one of the earliest known religious organizations erect in their midst, what is clearly a pagan symbol according to scripture?
