If you ever debate against atheist, you've probably come across an insult/arugumet along the lines of Christianity being a primitive nomad religion. This of course is nonsense.
Some fancy pants scholars cooked up a theory that religion evoluved with civilization, the theory goes that ancient people first beloved in simple basic awareness of natural energy or some spiritual force, but the force is not personal and doesnt reveal it self. This form of religion is called mana/fetishism or simply magic, the fetishism part has to do the believers collecting items to use the force within them.
Then on to animism, not much different from magic except for the believe in spirits being the source of power. The believers would try to appease nature spirits or ancestor spirits, not much different than what's know as voodoo today.
Then polytheism, the worship of multiple gods.
Then henotheism, the belief in many gods but only some are worshiped or are one group is under the control of one god and another group has it's own but all believe the same gods exist.
And finally monotheism.
There is no evidence of religion evolving. They ignore the validity of the Bible and come up with imaginary stories from their heads. What we can observe is the a reverse of this theory, in America we've had a decline in the amount of church attending Christians and an increase of wiccans, and eastern spiritualism. It's not an advancing civilization that causes change in religious beliefs, it's casting aside Christianity causing a men to belive as if they were uncivilized.
