So the law was put in charge of us until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. (Gal 3:24-25, TNIV)

If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin and if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:31-36)

If God's Law has been done away when we become a Christian how do we know if we have committed sin as we grow in holiness? How do we know that we need to repent of things in our lives that are stopping us from having a closer walk with our Heavenly farther? We cannot. As mentioned earlier sin is the transgression of God's Law (1John 3:4) You do away with it you do away with salvation. Not because we are saved by it but because is brings us closer to Jesus so we can live by faith. God's Law is the standard of righteousness and shows us what holiness is (Romans 7:12; Ps 119:172). It is only fulfilled in us as we walk in the Spirit and as God writes it in our heart through Love because it is only by Love that God's Law is fulfilled in us by grace through faith and is why Jesus says if you love me keep my commandments (Romans 13:8-10; ; Heb 8:10-12; John 14:15; 15:10)

How do we know if we are following God or not and we have the Holy Spirit?

1John 2:3-4,
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Act 5:32,
And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Obedience is the fruit of salvation by faith in God's Words. It is the operation of God is us so that we can love God and others. Christ in us is our hope of glory and if we love Jesus we must follow him (John 15:3-10; Col 2:12; James 2:20; Col 1:27; Rom 5:2; John 14:15; 15:10)

Like most grace preachers, Paul was slandered as someone who spoke against the law. He was labeled with the dreaded A-word: antinomian, meaning anti- or against the law. This is his response to that baseless accusation.

Sidebar: If you have never been accused of being an antinomian, perhaps that’s a sign you’re preaching a different gospel from Paul. Personally, I get accused of being an antinomiam on an almost weekly basis. For the record, I am for the law. I agree with Paul who said the law is holy, righteous and good (Rom 7:12). And I also agree with him when he says the law is not for the righteous but the sinner and ungodly (1 Tim 1:9). The law is a signpost to Jesus (Gal 3:24).
Paul says again and again that we are to live by faith, not law, but living by faith does not make one anti-law. On the contrary, it is by faith that we establish or support the law.

How do we establish or uphold the law? By trusting in Jesus who kept the law perfectly and by whose perfect sacrifice we are made righteous:

Those who trust in their law-keeping performance may scorn those of us who are walking by grace, but the fact is we are 100% lawful while they are the lawbreakers.
You do NOT establish the law by:

trying to keep it (you can’t)
adopting it as a standard for holy living (it’s a recipe for inferior living, see Heb 10:1)
mixing it with grace (you’ll end up lukewarm and alienated from Christ)
thinking your rule-keeping pleases the Lord (trusting in your flesh never pleases him)
posting it on your Sunday School wall (it’s a ministry that condemns!)
telling yourself “it’s part of our Christian heritage” (it never was!)

You DO uphold the law by putting your faith in the One who fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law on your behalf and who offers you his perfect righteousness as a gift.

Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. (Rom 10:4)

Romans 3:31 says we uphold the law by faith. Period. If you’re not convinced, it may help to look at the verse in context:

verse 28: You are justified by faith, not by law
verse 29: In any case only one nation received the law, yet God is God of all
verse 30: God will justify both the Jew and non-Jew by faith
verse 31: Does that mean God’s gift to the Jews was wasted? Not at all! As long as you end up with Jesus, then you uphold the law

The Jews were misusing the law. They thought it made them righteous and pleasing to God. Paul wrote to correct this:
No one is righteous. All have sinned and fall short – even the law-loving Jews. The law doesn’t make you righteous; it makes you conscious of sin so that you may be justified freely by grace. (my paraphrase of Romans 3)
Live by the law and you dishonor both it and Jesus. According to Romans 7, living by the law is spiritual adultery. It’s cheating on the One who died to set you free from the law’s heavy demands .

The law points to Jesus. If you are relying on Christ and his perfect work, then you uphold the law and honor the reason for which it was given.

The law and faith again.

This is one subject that you need to spend time in to understanding. Some just believe their minister or teacher and some never come to a satisfying understanding.

It isn't simply "faith is against the law" like some say.

There are many laws in the bible and faith is more than just believing.
Paul lived in a time when the gospel was going to the gentiles and the Jewish laws where being thrown away, because Christ had fulfilled many of them.

Paul was not referring to the same law in every verse, and sometimes he was referring to the consequences and the ministration of the laws, which means you need to read it in context and understand the difference.

Paul dose not contradict James or himself if you study it.
The law does not save us but the Bible does not say that grace has made all the laws void.

Until we understand the new creation in Christ and that we live by Christ's life now in the New Covenant - we will be always replacing Christ Himself for the keeping of the law of Moses in some form or other.

We must know as Paul said - "knowing this - that the law is not made for the righteous". 1 Tim. 1:9 We are the righteous in Christ.

Until people stop trying to create and maintain our own self-righteousness - we will be forever exchanging the work of Christ "for what we do or don't do".

The Law was brought in until the Promise came - which is Christ Himself.

Paul who knew the law better then anyone had this to say about the purpose of the law.

The purpose of the law was :

1) To reveal our sinful state - Rom 3:20

2) To inflame sin - Rom 7:8

3) To minister death in us - Rom 7:10-11

4) To lead us to Christ - Gal 3:24

The law is good, holy and spiritual but we are in the flesh. Jesus fulfilled all the law!

When we read the law we should be seeing Jesus in it. Jesus did not save us so that we could go back to the law.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is how we live now,

the law of liberty in Christ Jesus

the law of love

the law of faith ( the Law is NOT of faith - the just shall live by faith ).

The law of Christ - Himself is how we live now.

But the purpose of the law was not for righteousness or salvation at all, it was to manifest sin in our lives, so that the purpose of grace which is in Jesus is to manifest salvation. Grace does not set aside the law, but completely satisfied it.

Jesus said that all of the law and the prophets "speak of Him" He is the real substance - not the shadow of the Law itself.

Christians are dead to the Law, been released from the Law and are NOT under the Law. It can't get any plainer than that.

People are free to do whatever they want in relation to the Law - it does not make one righteous nor is it for salvation.

If someone wants to observe a particular day such as the Sabbath , festivals or eat or not eat some kinds of foods..etc - then they are free to do so.

These have no bearing on one's salvation or righteousness as all that is based on the finished work of Christ.

It's where people are saying "You must observe these things in the Law including the Sabbath day as outlined in the Old Testament or you are sinning and you are not obeying God"

- that's where the twisting comes in and it is a perversion of the gospel of the grace of Christ.

This is an anti-Christ belief system religion which has the "appearance" of good but it is really denying the Lord Jesus Christ's finished work. Hebrews 4:10

The "work" we do is to rest and believe in His finished work of Christ for us. That is our work. When we work to rest IN Christ., we can enter into His rest. While learning about faith., I've come to see many things about my flesh. Odd really how that works., but when the Holy Spirit points to Jesus., He shows how to see my own opinions and long held beliefs in the light of truth. There is no more condemnation like before in those younger days as a believer when I worked so hard to be good and imitate Jesus but saw what an utter failure I was in doing that.

It was not the Holy Spirit who condemned me. It was my horrid lack and inability to do the work myself. And in my human lack and weaknesses., I was shark bait for the enemy of my soul. I didn't know that Jesus had already gone before me and took all the condemnation and guilt and judgment I deserved EVEN and ESPECIALLY for the learning process of walking by faith and not by sight AS A BELIEVER.

The Holy Spirit's ministry has to be understood and taught to us by the Bible and the Spirit and those anointed teachers and preachers God has gifted to the church. How beautiful are the feet Romans 10:14-15

If we were taught that shame and blame and guilt for sin was to be used for a good purpose by the Holy Spirit in our Christian lives AND that it is a part of our Christian walk and experience., we WILL be defeated because we fail in our own estimation of the Christian walk every time.,because the enemy is the one who accuses and condemns the brethren. The Holy Spirit reminds us daily (if we read and also hear Him daily) of our righteousness IN Christ.
