Can something be a sin to one person but not to another?

Yes, because of the conscience. If someone believes eating a chocolate cake is an abomination to God, goes and eats a chocolate cake (fully believing that it is an affront to God) they have sinned against the Lord. They knew in their conscience it was wrong, and knowing this, they rebelled against their perception of God's will. It is sin.

Now we know that eating a chocolate cake isn't a sin. Yet, what does the conscience say in respect to God? This means that not all sin is sin for all, depending upon the conscience. Scripture informs us clearly what is sin for all, there are lists. Yet, the conscience bears record of what one does in opposition to what they believe to be right (or wrong). So, in response to the title of this thread, "yes" something can be a sin for one person and not another [depending upon their own conscience].

lol im not saying youve sinned or assumed anything :) just was discussing. the Point was that yes sin is sin, its transgression of the Law thats what sin is. did you Know in the old covenant even if a person didnt Know it was wrong, they were still punished as it they did? even if a stranger was coming through thier land and had no knowledge of the Law and they broke it, they were Held guilty and punished according to the Letter?

the new covenant is not that way sin, is when you Personally grasp something is a sin, and then you do it anyways, OR when you Know the good thing you ought to do, and dont do it, that to is sin. its what is meant by " following the spirit" its what is within us that speaks our thoughts, shapes our consciences, leads our minds, and eventually ends up being our actions as well. so its Kind of an important question the op raised.

we cant read in the Mosaic Law that even those who didnt Know are guilty and try to apply that to christianity we would end up living our lives pointing fingers at everyone we ever met. The new testament is where we have our covenant. it is based on the spirit within us, God is with us, we cant Hide anything anymore if we Know were sinning and continue its sin until we repent of the sin. if i have no idea something is wrong in Gods eyes, im innocent until the truth comes to Light within me and i become aware im sinning then, im sinning.....

Because Were dealing with the children born of the spirit, this allows God to individually be with us and shepherd us to the same place no matter who or where we are in Life. this also allows Gods Mercy and Longsuffering to work better for us to lead us to repentance through working the strings of Our Heart through the conscience inside of us God is working in the heart won By Christ. who provides a constant call to repentance and a constant flow of forgiveness.

My thought on rebellion is about the sin of rebelling not the reason.
So to believe something is a sin, and then do it shows rebellion. Once established
many other rebellious steps can be taken, because the rebellion is established and
love and loyalty broken.

We are born into separation from God, which expresses itself as rejection of all words
and ideas from God. I think when we meet God face to face it is this that will define
sheep from goats, and the goats will have no clue why because to them they are fine.
It is also why rejecting any words of Christ become sin, and are an expression of rebellion,
but listening to many something they do not even blink over. But Jesus is God and all
the words are Holy Spirit breathed.

The spiritual are often so blind to the sin already present in their hearts. God bless you.

God sending His Son Jesus, Glorifying His Son Jesus and exalting His Son Jesus is pretty important stuff regarding christianity.

I haven't read the new posts yet but something came to me regarding it. (your thread)
We always hear, if it goes against the bible, it's not God speaking to you or the Spirit.

God once told a man to sacrifice his son, yet we know God abhors that.

And he once told a man to marry a prostitute.

Both of these things would go against the bible, wouldn't they?

This is a more difficult subject than it first appeared to me.
 
Sin is measured by God's standards.

When one of us breaks one of God's standards, it is sin. When we fall short from God's standards, it is sin.

If I think lying is a sin, and another person doesn't think lying is sin...but God clearly states that lying is a sin....then lying is a sin and the person who doesn't believe lying is a sin IS living in sin and just in denial of the fact that lying is a sin or just ignorant of it.

Sin isn't measured by other people, but it is measured by what God's standards are.

With what you're saying, the Bible is clear about us to help our brothers and sisters not to stumble. So, if alcohol is a problem for someone else, don't drink around that person. You will then be held accountable for your actions and you have sinned against Christ (1 Corinthians 8:12). The Bible teaches us to help our brothers and sisters in Christ in their weaknesses and not to be the stumbling block. (1 Corinthians 8).

Tis been my experience, that? Depending on what curse words are used, and the manner, or INTENT, of the why one is speaking them? In my experience, has, in general, been from emotional outbursts, from an undisciplined, and generally, dark place within one's self.

Or? In this seemingly "symbiotic relationship", of the wheat and tares? A "self preservation" "mode". Be it from persecution because, Most, if not all of us, are in the belly of the beast, so to speak! Which, usually initiates (with me, anyways), a self persecution, "balancing act", with the "world", as it has become, with my inner man! To which the "man of flesh" me, in its seemingly "laziness" and the not really wanting to pull up stakes, and relocate, not merely my place of residence, or occupation, EVERY time, I come across those that are "OF the world", which, and let's face it folks...is EVERYWHERE around us, or?...Take our licks, while standing and bloom, where one is!

So, is cursing a sin? "Thou shalt NOT take the NAME of the LORD thy GOD in vain!"
Having said this?.....It certainly....is a "TELL"!
