I think the worst part of it all is that you do not believe I love you. You think it is a crush, puppy love, a fantasy, a delusion, etc. I suppose it is my fault. I did not make you feel my love for you.

It’s from the musical, Showboat. The character was biracial and married to a whote man. In the film, she was played by Ava Gardner rather than Lena Horne because Hollywood thought casting a black actress was too controversial. It is a shame, as I believe Horne originated the role on Broadway. But I don’t know for sure, I need to look it up.
