Cats or dogs?

I did not impugn WineRose, as far as I know. The only people I dissed were hipsters.

I am a provocateur, what can I say? Perhaps I am looking to be punched in the face. I suspect myself of masochism.

There is a tendency among a set of cat owners to look down on dog owners. Rednecks have dogs, that sort of thing.

I grew up with both cats and dogs, so I like both. I give the edge to dogs because dogs love their people. A dog would die to protect its human, a cat would not. There have been stories of dogs refusing to leave their owners’ graves. This type of devotion and love is not found in cats. I know that dogs are not for everyone. Their affection can be smothery and too much to deal with, cats’ periodic need of affection may be preferable since it is not demanding. Plus, the constant devotion of a dog may be seen as valueless, because it is always there. A cat’s affection is not so reliable, it is more variable, so may be seen as more valuable when the cat deigns to give affection to his human.

I will say that people who prefer cats often think they are more intelligent than the hoi poloi who prefer dogs (I am referring to hipsters).

I have not seen it, thank you for the recommendation. Greyfriars’ Bobby is a Disney live action film made in Scotland. It is based on a true story of a dog who visited his owner’s grave every day for years. There is a statue of Bobby in Edinborough, commemorating the dog’s love and devotion. There are no statues to loving cats, as far as I know.

I am defending dogs, but there is nothing wrong with preferring cats. I have had both dogs and cats.

Cats are much easier to maintain, and don’t require much attention. You are right about the people preferring calm and peace. I have heard people say that cats’ behavior is much more fascinating to observe than dogs’ behavior. Dogs generally are on standby until their owners give them a bit of attention. Cats have their own interests.

Actually my father said the same thing about cats that you said about dogs. He never liked cats because he felt they demanded too much attention, they were too pushy.

My mother always had cats, and still does have cats. She has never been without feline company. But there is only one cat that my father ever liked. Maxwell, a rather large (not fat, just big) cat with grey/black stripes and a white undercarriage. Max was dad's cat and dad liked Max a lot because Max was not pushy. Dad would be working out in his leather shop and Max would wander in and lie on a table in the corner. He didn't come up to dad and demand petting, he just curled up in the corner to be in the same room.

And Galatea I have to say I've known a lot of cat owners and dog owners, and neither of them ever seemed to be elitist. At least they never seemed elitist about cats or dogs. And about the redneck thing, I know more than a few little old ladies who love their big dogs and they would argue STRENUOUSLY about that.

Where in the world are you getting those stereotypes? Maybe those are just local stereotypes but I've never heard of such. Elitist cat owners, redneck dog owners? I do not comprehend.

I like both but I have only ever owned one Dog. This is because our work and life style hasn't really fitted in with Dog ownership My wife and I have had several Cats. We have two at present which have been our companions for the past six years.

Oh, you see it quite often online, cat owners say things like “cats are so much smarter than dogs” and “I like cats because they are not one dimensional, they are more fascinating than dogs”. There is the implication that since dogs are more “simple” than cats, then dog owners must be more “simple minded” than cat owners. Take a gander at youtube, cat owners can be kind of elitist. Not ALL, before I get accused of saying “all cat owners are condescending toward dog owners”. But many are.
