Someone just posted a video on social media about grounding/earthing. I've never heard of it before. The man in the video explains that going barefoot outdoors is advantageous because we become electrically connected to the earth. Is there any bonifide evidence to support grounding being beneficial to our health? Does it really strengthen our immune system and heal inflammation? Or have I just been hornswoggled by some overzealous nature lovers?

I walk bare foot around my bedroom, less likely to get stuck by thorns or
stand on worms! :p

I would also prefer to hug a teddy bear instead of a tree!

Honestly, I used to love walking barefoot in the city and the country. I'd carry my shoes around in case I'd want to enter a place of business. But as you pointed out Miri, feet can get hurt by thorns, sharp stones, glass shards, and even get stung by bees in the grass. I was just wondering if there was any truth to the claims about grounding.

There's really no valid, scientific, large scale studies that have proven it.

Its real. Always refer back to the garden of Eden lifestyle when questioning of something is good for you or not.

Just because science can not validate does not mean it is false.
BTW, grounding, or earthing as some people call it, is scientifically valid...

It goes back a long way. Remember Kenta Kountze in the movie, Roots?

Our human bodies are comprised of trillions of bacteria which interact with the bacteria in the outside world. Just like the scripture where two individuals who join together become one sharing both their physical and spiritual selves.

And merely bathing in sunlight boosts our vitamin D.

All I said was it wasn't proven. I didn't say it was false. Don't out words in my mouth.
So you are not saying it's proven. Just that the theory is scientifically valid. But that's still not proof. And science theories can be wrong.
Myth Busters is often an excellent example if this.

So despite your arguing and putting words in my mouth you actually have proven nothing except your character flaws. And also gave me a good reminder why I keep you on ignore.

There is some truth to this but not much If grounding did help with these issues everyone would be walking around with no shoes on to cure arthritis etc...

hmmm maybe it might not be hype here is a few paragraphs on it
Being grounded can help relieve inflammation. In a small pilot study of 12 subjects, results indicated that grounding the human body during sleep reduces night-time levels of cortisol and resynchronizes cortisol hormone secretion more in alignment with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm profile. In one case, medical thermal imaging was used to image a 44-year-old woman with chronic back pain. Images taken after being grounded while sleeping for four nights, as compared to before grounding, showed a reductions in inflammation, at which time the woman also reported:

· 30 percent reduction in pain

· 70 percent reduction in pain interfering with sleep

· 30 percent reduction in morning stiffness and soreness

After four weeks of continued grounding while sleeping, she reported:

· 80 percent reduction in pain

· No sleep interference

· 70 percent reduction in morning stiffness and soreness

By eight weeks, she reported that her pain was gone.

2. Reduced Stress Levels

When grounded, the diurnal rhythm of the stress hormone, cortisol, begins to normalize. Cortisol is a vital part of our body’s stress response system and helps control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism and inflammation, and assist with memory formulation. A study that examined the diurnal rhythm of cortisol after sleeping grounded showed a normalization of the rhythm. In addition to a normalization of the rhythm, participants in this study also slept better and woke up feeling more refreshed.

3. Improved Circulation

When we are grounded our circulation improves, aiding in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in the body, including better blood flow to the face. These were findings of a study that used a laser speckle contrast camera to quantify facial blood flow in response to one hour of grounding.

How to Reconnect to the Earth

While the research on grounding is relatively new, the practice is timeless. Past societies went barefoot or wore leather footwear made from hides that allowed the energy of the Earth to rise up into their bodies. They were grounded.

In modern society, most of us have lost our electrical roots, so to speak. We are disconnected and this disconnection may be a seriously overlooked cause of human pain and discomfort and the steady rise of chronic illness worldwide.

The good news is we can easily get grounded. Weather and schedule permitting, go barefoot for a half-hour or more, go outside and see what a difference that makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, or walk on soil, grass, sand, or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt, and vinyl are not conductive.

For many people, however, there isn’t time in their busy days to go out barefoot. There are, fortunately, indoor options. Investing in grounding products, such as grounding mats or chairs, can be used to remain electrically grounded to the earth

Myth busters is not always right.
Please, keep me on ignore. We'll both be better off for it.

Hi aunt,
Thot to share.

I have strived to practice some grounding before, forget, then do again, but got to see this recently. It may also interest and help others. We can choose the grasses we walk in, but beaches are fine too when accessible. I believe grounding has had much negative impression coz of the way the new agers have been promoting it.

Thank you everyone for your input. My son also researched and found some interesting information online, which supported grounding. He also reminded me about the time he had asthma attacks when he was very young and discovered something which helped him tremendously. He would go barefoot outdoors in the morning and do calisthenics (exercise)and it would help him breathe freely again. It really worked for him, I remember that!

just personally, (if one want's to call it 'grounding' - sounds good to me), anyway,
I can vividly remember a very early 'grounding', living in 'key-west', and being
told to 'get out' and don't come home until lunch, I was about 2/1/half or (3)), and yes, I did
feel the sand rubbing against my little, tender feet and toes, and that I loved the feeling
of it, always wanting to get back there when ever I could...

also later, different state, I can vividly remember the grass beneath my feet and
what the 'clover' felt like, etc...it is real...God made it for us in order to survive...
it's our main organ, feeling God's ways...

and let's not forget the 'snow', and all of the OTHER beautiful gifts...

Btw, I'm in Central Texas and the grass is not soft and cushiony like it is in Pennsylvania. Back east the grass is dewy and velvety under your bare feet. Here in Cactus-Land, it's bristly, scratchy crabgrass protruding like tiny spikes out of hard, dry soil. It is not comforatble to my feet at all. Plus, we have fire ants that bite like crazy. I'm wondering if "barefoot sandals" would do the trick. Does anyone here know?

Hay, AA,

I can remember back in the early 70's, that local people would make custom made sandals,
and they really were great, and cheap, and yes, there definitely was a different feeling while wearing them,
as opposed to shoes that strangled and tied you in!:)
