You know how Matthew 6:5-6 talks about praying in secret with nobody else around. What if you don't have a peaceful, quiet and alone place to pray? I often have this problem and I'm sure there are other people who don't have a quiet and peaceful place to pray either.

this verse is about not trying to appear holy before others for the sake of seeming like a good man

but to have genuine prayer between you and God

:)

I usually do pray in my head, however I can't focus on my prayer very well if there are other people around. I guess I got to get up in the morning early enough... :)

Hi Devin...Do you not have a bathroom, or a place you can shower or lay in the bath :)...My bathroom is my secret closet, although I live on my own so my house is very quiet, but when my family and grand kids are over, I know I can run my bath and get my time with God there, just a thought...xox...

Yes indeed we have a bathroom with a bath/shower. That is a good idea, thanks! :)

lol… in the bathroom? hmm, yeah i've heard of that before! God does tend to speak to people who are busy having a shower. there are so many good examples out there!

having my quiet time in the bathroom has never worked well for me… lol

I think the context of "praying in secret" was just to say you shouldn't be praying in front of others in an effort to make a show of how spiritual you are to other people.
(You can still pray out loud, and still pray with others, but it's a matter of intention.)

Looking for a quiet private place to have "alone time" with God is really a different issue.
But it's certainly good to have quiet private time alone with God.

What works for one may not work for another...I love my queit time of an evening...I light my candles to God and thank Him that I have hot running water, I thank Him for my bubbles and the roof over my head :)...Laying back in a nice hot bath is my quiet time with the LORD, no traffic noise, no noise at all, it`s a beautiful time I spend with the LORD, and go over my day with Him, and He has no problem with that...xox...

I always pray from my heart, and in any circumstances or time.
Remember, God already knows what is in your heart.
So, as soon as you are in touch with your own heart (good or bad), you are communing with God.
It really is that simple.

If I recall the passage, it is about attitude. It is preaching against the pharisaical pray for show type thing. Also...I have a hard time believing you have NO quiet place to pray. I live in a household of 11 people (counting me). I share a room with four of my sisters :p. I went through a phase of being so hungry for alone time with God, I set an alarm for the middle of the night and got up to pray; (get out of bed first lol). I do not recommend that, but there are things you can do. Try a different time of day, maybe? Are your family Christian? If they are, you can even use the living room. My family usually leaves a body alone if they are kneeling or reading their Bible. Or try going to a park, or something.

We have 10 people in are family and I share a room with two brothers, so yeah I get what you are talking about. I have started setting an alarm to get up earlier so I can have some quiet time than. I also found another spot that is usually quiet. Thanks for all the suggestions and insight everyone! Happy New Year! :)

Small house, so rarely quiet going on here. But I need to write silently, so I've developed ways for quietness, and use it for God-time too.

"noise-canceling headphones." Doesn't really cancel noise, but much quieter. (Ear buds don't work.) Worse comes to worse they have spongy things to put in your ears at your local drug store.

Eyes closed. Really stops the visual distractions.

Check if the stove is on, because burning food really cuts quiet time.

People have to sleep sometime, so late nights or early mornings means quiet.

Bathroom. Very few dare to intrude in the bathroom. (Just don't stay too long, if there is only one toliet. lol)

Unless your disabled, you are not stuck in the house. There's a whole world outside that door. If it's reasonable temperatures out, there is a nook near you -- maybe a natural setting near drainage pipes no one goes to, or a part of a park no one goes to, (in my case, because it's a bottomland, so flooded a couple of months in spring or after downpours), or behind the 7-11, because very few people go in back of a convenience store, or a car sitting in the garage, driveway, or curb. A car no one is using at the moment. I live in Philly with 1.1 million other people. I can still find a quiet place, or make one.

I needs me some quiet sometimes.

That is why summer is so great for me! It is below zero temperatures where I love so outside isn't a very good option. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I'm not overly sure God cares how or when we talk to Him. My favorite place to pray is really on a four wheeler. I don't talk to Him like He's some far away thing...I talk to Him like I would have my grandpa...like I would a really good friend who I happen to respect a lot. Don't overthink it...do what feels comfortable.
