The Jesus said, unless you eat the flesh of Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you KJVJohn6:53-55 53."Then Jesus said unto them,Verily, Verily,I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Men, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.54. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, has internal life and I will raise him up in the last day; 55.For my flesh is a meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed."
Greetings 20,
Jesus also said that he was the sheep gate, the bread of life and the water of life, which were/are all figures of speech.
Roman Catholicism took the figurative meaning of eating the Lord's flesh and drinking his blood, literally, which is why they believe in Transubstantiation. This is when the priest calls Christ down out of heaven where he enters into the Eucharist, where a change takes place where it becomes the literal flesh and blood of the Lord, which isn't true.
When Jesus instituted the breaking of bread it was figurative of his body, where the cup containing the wine represents his blood that was shed for many. That this is meant to be figurative can be seen by the fact that the Lord broke literal bread and said
this is my body. Likewise, he took the cup of wine and said,
this is my blood
Therefore, the scriptures which say "unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood" is figurative of consuming Christ into your life. Even the word of God is spoken of figuratively as food.
You also have to remember that under the law it was forbidden to eat blood. Animals that were considered clean had to be drained of all of their blood before eating. Therefore, it would not be plausible to think that Jesus was saying to literally eat his flesh and drink his blood. For those who were under the law, this saying would have been repulsive, but they misunderstood what he was saying in his parables.
Hope this helps
