God created man with a need in his heart that only God can satisfy. Man is incurably religious. Even the "darkest" heathen go about to satisfy their need for a god by creating one from nature. Romans one reveals as much quite clearly.

And by them serving this created idol, makes God's hatred that much worse. Look at all the enemies of Israel, they all had their 'gods', and God destroyed them for their idolatry.

Ha! Also not what I expected.

If a person is dead-dead what does that mean? No brain function. No organs functioning. No anything functioning. Unable to recover, ever.

Why is spiritually dead different? The spirit in us does not exist. It died so long ago, we can't even remember the death. It's like being born without a hand. People born without a hand, have no muscle memory for that hand, because they never had it. They don't have phantom pain for that hand, because they never had the hand. And, they tend to learn how to function without a hand before anyone bother teachs them how to function without the hand.

No hand, so live without the hand. No spirit, so live without a spirit. Not work either as if it is still alive. It's not alive. It didn't exist.

I grew up Catholic, so I grew up in religion. I felt guilt as only someone raised Irish and Catholic can. I was guilty for my brother breaking his knee a mile away, because I should have done something to stop him from breaking his knee. I was just as guilty for stealing that candy bar from the grocery store, because I should know I shouldn't still.

In both cases, there was no spirit in me to tell me why I should really feel guilty. Or what I should feel guilty about. OR, most important, what to do with the guilt. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. No connection between me and the Holy Spirit, because my spirit was dead.

And so, according to tradition, I went to a priest every 3-4 weeks to confess my sins and do penance. And I felt guilty. And I thought saying three Our Fathers, six Hail Marys, and three Glory bes, fixed the guilt. Why?

Because NO spirit in me to tell me that wasn't it. Spirit was dead. Did NOT connect the dots!

And then something weird happened. Someone regenerated me. Regenerated my spirit. Well, honestly? That's part of this. I really don't know if he regenerated my dead spirit, or he simply put his Spirit in me and that's what I'm working with. Is it like a Jarvis heart? Not my heart, but it keeps me alive until a heart comes along, so it is my heart.

Is the Holy Spirit our spirit now, and forever, or do we get our own spirit?

Because my old spirit? Never did remember it. It was dead before my memories. And walking in this spirit is different from that good Irish Catholic girl I used to be. Sometimes I feel phantom pains for something I never had. Sometimes I try to use an old spirit that was dead before I can remember.

If we don't get "spiritually dead," then how do we get "alive in Christ?"
I liken spiritual death to a spiritual corpse. Just as those bones in the valley in Ezekiel 37 could not will themselves to physical life, neither can the spiritually dead will themselves to spiritual life. God has to move unilaterally and bring that spiritually dead corpse to life.

NOTE: Repentance isn't a requirement for salvation.
If you prefer to contradict the Lord Jesus Christ and the apostles and create your own dogma, there is nothing more to be said.

Another case of because you said so, got it. I sent you the scripture's and you still deny. You just can't handle the truth.

Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.
1 John 2:10

This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God
1 John 4:2-3

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?
We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. "
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
Luke 23:40-44

Repentance through seeing sin, confession by seeing the truth, salvation by showing faith.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.
Colossians 2:13-14

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
Eph 2:1-3

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
1 John 3:14

The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.
Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

What died? Did it die for all of us? And, if it died, how is it some got it again? Or did anyone get it again? (That last part was after I started wondering if the spirit in me is really me or really the Holy Spirit in me.)
I think it died for all of us in the sense that we were born in Adams image. He was spiritually dead and so he brought forth the spiritually dead. For all of misty eyed sentiment about children being born in Gods' image and with His Spirit but then losing His Spirit when they sin, this is not what I get from scripture. What I get from scripture is that we deserve death because of whose children we are, like mephibosheth, and that we are born not in Gods' image but in adams image.

Thank God that we have a God who gave us a way out of the futility we were born into!

But also, DC has shown us with scripture that there is an age of accountability, or David would not have known he would see his baby again.

Gods wrath is not directed at man but at sin. If man refuses to forsake his sin then man is condemned with sin.

It is difficult with my impaired ability to love to understand how God is able to love man and hate sin without compromise. Perfect love and perfect hate is beyond my comprehension.

Man was created to love and worship God. No man is worthy and all men need mercy or they perish.

I'm alarmed that everyone thinks death means functioning fine, systems normal, except apart from God.
Dead to the promises of God awaiting the second death..... our bodies returning to the lifeless spiritless dust from where they were formed of .

He hates (no blessing) the sin and the sinner so much that he put on corrupted flesh to put away sin in the flesh to those he does bless. He has mercy by blessing those who does have mercy on. To hate is the opposite of bless by loving a person.

Psalms 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

People can be very much alive, functioning fine, systems normal, and yet be spiritually dead -- separated from God. So there is nothing to be alarmed about.

Man is a tripartite being --body, soul, and spirit -- but God puts the spirit ahead of the soul and the body. The spirit is within the soul but distinct from the soul, and it is dead at birth (since all human beings are born separated from God). The spirit is that part of man which can communicate with God and comprehend spiritual things. And until and unless the Holy Spirit enters a sinner's spirit, it remains dead. However, when a sinner repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ, he or she receives the GIFT of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). The Holy Spirit is the one who "quickens" (or brings to life) the spirit at the moment of regeneration, and then indwells the spirit continuously.

Sinners are NOT regenerated first and then start believing and repenting. They must FIRST believe and repent and then they are regenerated. That is when the spirit can begin to truly have a relationship with the Godhead and also understand spiritual things. That is why Jesus said Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God...Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:3,5).
I have to say this was not at all how it worked with me at all. I did not "believe and repent" at all to "earn" regeneration. When God granted me repentance I was at a point where I didn't even buy into the whole "God thing", and I had no idea what was about to take place (regeneration). In my case it was 1,000% God all the way, I did nothing at all and was literally awe struck and dumbfounded once I realized what had happen. When it says in Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

I understand that to include boast like "I repented" or "because I had faith", which I agree both take place, but they are both gifts from God as well, so I disagree strongly that "we believe and repent" first at all, otherwise it's not ALL God, and I think He clearly tells us it is.

My case made I do want to add I understand what you're saying, from our limited perspective it does seem that way, in time/space to us we may experience it that way, but if you have to believe or repent first, and God isn't doing it, then it is by something we do that we are saved, and we could then turn around and boast "I believed", and we have NO boast at all right? He gets ALL glory because He does EVERYTHING right?

Hell was created for the devil and his angels not for man.

Mt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

I think from the quote you offered that Washer is wrong. I do not know the context of his quote but it does not appear to agree with scripture.

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Brought Near by His Blood

Yeah, but right now, God's still having mercy upon them.

We all need to be careful or we might fall into the get 'em Lord and punish 'em Lord type attitude. God says for us to have mercy.

Not saying you have this type of attitude, just saying we were all lost at one time so we all need to remember that and have mercy on others.

God hates by not blessing all wonderful workers of inquity. The sinner as well as the sin . He does not bless them by taking away the penalty for their sin .Falling angels that are not led by the Spirit of God that left there first place of habitation are not subject to salvation. He simply does not know workers of inquity. They must be born again as new creature.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.Mat 7:23

The everlasting fire is applied to both being prepared for all who do not know Christ as workers of inquity. They will not rise to new spirit life on the last day .God loves the sinner by working in him to both will and do His good pleasure. Only then could he love those as new creatures in whom he does work to both will and do His good pleasure. He takes no delight in the sinners before he gives them a new spirit.

To be spiritually dead is to be separated from God because of sin.
[h=1]Isaiah 59King James Version (KJV)[/h]59 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

The only way that sin can be covered or washed away is through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ.

In Him we have life without Him we are dead.

what does it mean?
dead.... spiritually

anything before or without this
_________
Ezekiel 36:26
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
_________
Romans 8:10
If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness

what does it look like?

usually like the reprobate
or the self righteous
or anything between without faith in Him

what are they doing spiritually?

uhhhhh

id guess nothing unless it is possible to decay further

Not only did you answer my original question, you also answered a question I got to thinking when talking about this. You answered if that living spirit in me is mine, or God's. Not a temporary replacement spirit. Not the Holy Spirit, (although I suspect he is the one that maintains it for me.) My spirit!

Which, honestly, answers some of the question I asked EG about which part of us gets eternity. He was saying "spirit," but was talking soul too. I now get where the spirit part comes from. Which...

means I might finally be getting part of that dichotomy/trichotomy thingy I've never been able to get. I always knew this body got dumped at physical death. I just never knew what was left after that. Soul? Spirit? Both? Neither?

Between you and EG, I just got all the way up to at least partly understand what is left. "Spirit." It's mine. It was dead. It is no longer dead. And it gets to spend eternity with the Lord worshiping him and just downright enjoying him forever.

Way cool!

Soooo,

in your very minimalism style of writing, you just taught me more, in one, relatively short post, than I've learned in a very long time.

Thank you!
