Alright, so I'm curious as to what people can come up with for suggestions on Christian music that is NOT cheesy. Please, no commercialized, slick as a slip-in-slide stuff either. I think this will be a huge challenge since so much of it is.

(I'm sure there are others. haha. But these are some I like...and I don't think they're cheesy. I can't stand that a lot of Christian music is cheesy. Like, most Christian radio stations are awfully cheesy. Makes me wanna listen to mainstream instead. Which sucks. Haha. I need to make my own station.)

No idea what your taste in music is, but here is a little picking of various genres:

YouTube - Your Hands - JJ Heller ~Indie

YouTube - Cry Out to Jesus by Third Day ~ contemporary Christian

YouTube - Lecrae - Rebel ~rap

my current favorite 2 DCB songs (Rock, I think?):
YouTube - David Crowder Band - All I Can Say
YouTube - Deliver Me

YouTube - Matisyahu - King Without A Crown ~not a Christian singer per se, but he is singing about God. (and how can Jewish Reggae not be awesome? honestly)

YouTube - Because of who you are - Martha Munizzi ~black gospel (yes, I realize Martha Munizzi is white)

YouTube - He Understands My Tears ~southern gospel

YouTube - Rich Mullins - My Deliverer.wmv ~no idea what genre he is, but Rich Mullins is just awesome

YouTube - Don Moen - God is good ~contemporary praise and worship (this song is slightly country)

YouTube - "You Are My Hiding Place" by Selah ~contemporized hymns

YouTube - When The Saints - Sara Groves ~indie/gospel

YouTube - Mary Mary - Get Up ~R&B

Yes. Generally, any group that is not in the Top 40 list is less likely to have been a commercialized group. An example of a person who isn't commercialized would be Derek Webb. Some Christian stores won't even sell his music, because they think the language is too strong.

YouTube - What Matters More by Derek Webb [Music Video]
YouTube - Wedding Dress

His messages aren't the feel-good type of Christian stuff that you hear on Christian radios all the time. He tells it like it is, and perhaps that is a turn off to some Christians who only want their ears tickled.

A lot of Christian rappers aren't "commercialized" exactly. They may be popular, but they still give you straight messages that aren't the feel-good stuff you hear on Christian radios.

YouTube - trip lee - looking for love
YouTube - Truth (with lyrics) by Lecrae

When I think of commercialized, I think of Christian artists that only sing feel-good songs. Songs about how God loves us no matter what, how God will do anything for us, songs that are basically me-centered instead of God-centered. Or commercialized would be Christians who are too lazy to write their own songs, so they steal secular songs and make a cover of the song, and then they say "Oh, well it's a Godly song now, because I made a cover of it." Examples:

YouTube - The Reason (with lyrics)
is a cover of YouTube - Hoobastank - The Reason

YouTube - Yolanda Adams- I believe I can fly
is a cover of YouTube - R Kelly I Believe I Can Fly Lyrics

YouTube - DC Talk - Jesus Is Just Alright
is a cover of YouTube - Jesus Is Just Alright - Doobie Brothers

At least 2 Christian artists have done a cover of YouTube - Earth, Wind & Fire - Sing a Song

David Crowder is the poster child of cheesy....i think his music is terrible, and most of them are cover songs.
Looking up the original version of How he loves us by John Mark Mcmillian. Its so much better

Tedashii
Skillet
blessthefall(first cd at least(his last walk), they got a new lead singer and the messaged changed somewhat with cd 2)

I don't think David Crowder is cheesy. He has some cheesy songs (like Dance on the CD Church Music), but alot of his other stuff is good. Most of his songs are not covers, though.

And a lot of worship artists do cover songs. Even Michael W. Smith sings cover songs. If it is a good Christian song, what's wrong with doing a cover of it?

I like the cover by Jesus Culture of How He Loves. The original is, of course, very nice.

(Jesus Culture would be a band that does mostly covers, btw. They are still awesome)

I don't know if you are referring to DCB or Jesus Culture. Either way, they are both anointed people of God, and I appreciate their using their gift to help spread the blessing God has bestowed on them to other people. Whether they are "musicians" or "glorified karaoke artists" they can still be used by God.

Personally, I don't expect praise and worship leaders to sing only original songs. We can't all be Chris Tomlins or Don Moens.

true. And with that, I would just like to say I cannot stand Amy Grant's new song "better than a hallelujah." Basically the song is saying God loves honest misery more than He does praise. That is downright stupid. God would rather we praise Him than complain to Him about our sorrows any day. Sadly, the song sounds pretty, so people don't take the time to actually pay attention to the lyrics.

The chorus:
"We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah"

That is not Biblical. Paul and Silas were not pouring out their miseries in prison. They were praising God. God does not hear a melody when His children are suffering. It is not beautiful to be a mess; it is simply messy. God created us to WORSHIP Him. A Hallelujah (literally: Praise God) will always be more beautiful to God than our miserable lives.

Christian artists get on my nerves with their pretty songs that aren't Biblically sound. If you are going to make a living out of being a Christian artist, take the time to research what you're writing.
