When people think of [your name], they think of [your reputation].
Which is more important: the name you are given at birth, or how
you define that name over the course of your lifetime?

Well, when I consider Jabez (whose name means "sorrow") in I Chronciles 4:9-10, my answer is that it is more important how I define that name over the course of my life.
I Chronicles 4:9-10
[FONT="]9 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez,[a] saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
[/FONT][FONT="][/FONT][FONT="]10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.[/FONT]

Yes, however, it works both ways. I can bring shame or I can bring honor. Of course, God tells us to "honor" our parents.
There is a difference between "obey" and "honor." As I grew into adulthood and was living on my own, I used to feel so guilty when I would not do what my mother would tell me to do. I would feel controlled and manipulated.
It was so freeing when I learned to "honor" my mother by respectfully saying, "No."
Also, by simply living a good clean life by making decisions that are pleasing in God's sight brings "honor" to my parents.

How else can you harm your reputation? Proverbs 12:8; 13:5.
-If someone steals, he gets a reputation as a thief, they are [known by there fruits]
People can tell whether your actions are worthy of a good reputation or not.
"Even a child is known by his doings,whether his work be pure,and whether it be right.
-A person who does diligent work will be looked up to by others
