Yesterday I stopped at a fast food Chinese take out restaurant in my area. The menu is entirely Chinese food and very good.
Here's what I noticed while I sat and waited for my order.
The counter clerk was an oriental man who spoke both american English and ( I assume ) Chinese. All 4 cooks were Hispanic and spoke Spanish to one another. When calling out the orders to the cooks the counter clerk spoke Chinese. The customers were Caucasian, African-American, and Hispanic. Everyone got their correct food order in a fast and efficient and friendly manner .

Better than my workplace. I asked my boss, "What about diversity?" She replied, "De longer you vork here, diverse it gets."

(This joke shameless cribbed from a Dilbert cartoon.)

One of the big things in children's books now is "diversity." And I'm supposed to tell agents I have it. I keep thinking since it's set in Philadelphia can't it just be assumed it has it? (It is. I just refuse to tell them, or even the readers. Let people think whoever they want to think for the human characters... until the illustrations are shown.)

We went to the Japanese House in Fairmount Park last week. I took a picture of what three art students were looking at as they drew. The one with the straight black hair was not Caucasian.

Matter of fact, Caucasian is the minority in this city, and I love that everyone can tell where they come from, but if you ask them who they are, they'll say, "Philadelphian." Well, actually, they'll be more specific. After all. I'm not a Philadelphian. I'm originally a South Jersey Gal who is now a South Philly Gal. I just love The South. lol

OMGosh I can't believe you mentioned Fairmount Park. One of the places from my childhood memories that I've totally forgotten about!

I can't say for certain that all 4 cooks were fluent in mandarin, but it appears they knew enough to fill the orders.

I guess that's all you need. If somebody wanted to work at the grill where I work he wouldn't need to know all about speaking english. All he would need to know is "reg" "quarter" "crispy" "fish" and etc. to know what to cook.

It is ironic that those who insist upon diversity and tolerance will not tolerate and will not accept those who disagree with their form of political correctness.
