Where does a person go when he dies?

Why do some people believe when some one dies their soul goes to heaven? And they believe that their friends and family,( Mary) that passed is watching over them.

The bible says in :

Eccles 9:5,6,10 "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, ... for the memory of them is forgotten.Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun." "Whatsoever...; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither though goest.

1 Thess 4: 16 "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we be with the Lord forever.

1 Cor 15:52 In a moment, In the twinkling of an eye ... and the dead in Christ shall raise incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

If THE DEAD IN CHRIST is already in heaven why will Jesus come for them? Why they be the first to be caught up in the clouds ? :confused:​

I believe that when someone dies, if they have accepted Christ their soul goes to Heaven. When the time arrives for the Rapture, Jesus will rejoin their soul with a heavenly body that never ages, gets sick, or dies. At that point, they are no longer a spirit alone, but an eternal being perfected by God.

All that is in heaven is the souls/spirits of the dead. Not their bodies in resurrected state.



It says in Ecc that:

Ecc 12:7 then the dust shall return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.


In Acts 7:59, Stephen said "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" as he died.

So the dust (our flesh) returns to the earth, but our spiritual part goes to God.

This spiritual part of us is not some inanimate force it is us, our personalities, our emotions, our memories, thoughts and feelings.


This is also testified to by those who have had near death/ or resurrection experiences themselves, and recall seeing their body in the state they died in, as they in their soul float to heaven.

I believe 1 Th 4:16 refers to resurrection of the body. The resurrection is when the soul rejoins the resurrected body on earth.


If your soul is separate from your body you are dead. Just because you can think and feel in your soul state doesn't mean you are alive. Ecc 9:5, 6, 10 is referring to the memory of those while they are on earth. It doesn't refer in any way to what sort of state a person is in after they die.

Gill commentary says:

this is not to be understood of their separate spirits, and of the things of the other world; for the righteous dead know much, their knowledge is greatly increased; they know, as they are known; they know much of God in Christ
....
but this is to be interpreted of their bodily senses now extinct, and of worldly things they have now nothing to do with; they know not any thing that is done in this world, nor how it fares with their children and friends they have left behind them; see Job_14:21; nor therefore are they to be prayed unto, and used as mediators with God. The Targum is,
"and sinners know not any good, so that they do not make their works good while they live; and they know not any good in the world to come;''

When people die both saved and unsaved,they go to a place called Hades (greek language) Sheol (hebrew) which means place of departed spirits or
intermediate state luke 16:22-26,2 peter 2:4,the word hell in both of these passages is a mistranslation,should be Hades in both cases..place
of departed spirits. The correct word for hell is
Geenna (greek) Jesus uses this word in matthew 5:29
In Hades(place of departed spirits there is a gulf,
the saved on one side,unsaved on the other side,the
final destination of the saved is Kingdom of God
(heaven) the final destination of the unsaved is the
lake of fire(hell)

they lay in the ground. Because it is silly to think that they do anything else. That some how we are filled with a energy that passes through us...that is a buddhist idea....that our karma continues on.....

I've heard that a person consists of spirit, body and soul. When a person dies, the body is dead, but spirit and soul survive. As "eagleheart" said the soul and the spirit survive in Hades.

But seriously guys... OT passages need to be viewed through the lens of the resurrection. You're going to get really confused about things reading Eccl. passages without thinking how the NT affects these things.

The term alien as used biblically is not about extraterrestrials. It refers to those outside of a covenant relationship with God.

I agree with you, I believe the Lord when He was in the grave took the keys of death hell and the grave, and there fore there no longer a holding place for the spirits. When He arose they came out with him,

The problem with thinking that there is no longer a waiting place is that this idea seems to bypass the resurrection at the end of time.

Jesus' spirit not only came out of Hades (Paradise) but his body also came out of the grave. Our bodily resurrection is not until the end.

The word tells us death is the last enemy to be stamped under his feet. we shall never taste of death, for he freed us from the laws of sin and death on calvery. However, some of us are asleep, but will be wakened, inheriting uncorruptable bodies, and everlasting life.There is a ageneration who will be standing when the trump sounds. And this be it! Remember, whom the son sets free is free indeed, and in his word[christ] we are set free! Let us now establish his law in our hearts

The bible tells us that "to be absent of the body is to be present with the Lord". The real question isn't so much "where" do we go but rather "when" do we go. There is much debate on whether on not the dead immediately go to heaven or hell after dying or does their soul / spirit lay "sleeping" wherever and however their body is "laid to rest".

The thing to remember is that when God the physical universe, He also created time which means time, at least as we know it, does not effect or dictate to God whatsoever. The bible often refers to our Lord as "He who is and is to come". Seeing as we are created in God's "image", it is safe to assume that when we pass from this life into the next, time will no longer have any effect on us either.

Most will have a hard time wrapping their limited understanding around this one but if I had to make a guess as to which perspective is the right one, I would have to say BOTH.

I agree, at least as it pertains to our existence on this side of eternity. However, tell that to someone who truly believes that they had died, met the Lord, and was sent back. Were they asleep? The answer is that when we die our soul transcends outside of time, time being just another aspect of the physical universe in which we currently live.

Biblical examples of the living encountering the dead are Samuel being allowed to speak to Saul and the appearance of both Moses and Elijah on the mount of transfiguration. While it could be argued that Elijah never died, keep in mind that Moses did die a physical death.

The bible says your soul/spirit goes to God. It doesn't "sleep". Even when you sleep, you dream, you think, the mind is active.
