Water in wooden barrels gets stale fast. Beer will keep longer and ale being higher in alcohol lasts even longer. That's where thee ledgends of tankards of ale and sailors came from. It was safer than water but not for getting drunk by hooligans. They can fall overboard [[or get pushed] too.

Yes, from what I can see about sailing it is work, but they are inexpensive to operate. I had a friend in Redondo Beach that had a 55 foot schooner fitted with two diesel inboard engines. Boy did they burn the fuel. He said he had to have as least $2500 just to get it out past the breakwaters to break even. This was in the 1970s.

Steam rules the sea. Once you get bricks in the boiler red hot you can turn off the fuel and just burn bricks. But that's a ship not a boat.
