Hi,


I know someone who is expecting, and she wants to name her Jezebel. I know that it is a mom's decision, but Jezebel was evil! Why would you want to name your child after her?

Am I out of line? Or should I say something to her?

It is just a name it dosen't mean she is going to be evil because she has that name. That is like saying all boys or girls with names out of the bible that were great ppl in the Lord are going to be the same way when they grow up. I think you should leave it alone.

I once saw a movie a long time ago called Children of the Corn. I didn't like it because it was a scary movie, I was like 7 or 8 years old but I remember the kid who was in charge. Malachi. I hated that name. I thought it was evil and of satan all because of that movie. Once I was saved I saw that Malachi was in the bible and he was the last of the minor prophets. He was a messenger informing the Jews that the Messiah was coming and to have faith. For nearly 22 years I hated a name because it came from hollywood.

I would say a name is a name. Maybe this young girl will make Jezebel a great name. I would ask if she knows of its origins. Then tell her you heard from a guy who has a new cousin Carriage and isn't that a pretty name.( I don't want my family to be the only one with that name in it.)
 
I don't think a name means much. My name is Ben, and I was named after the song 'Ben' (The Rat) by Michael Jackson (or at least that's what I've been told). I'm terrified of rats, so the name doesn't fit. I also know someone with the name Saddam, and he is one of the most generous and kind hearted Christians I've ever met.
 
I agree that a name means nothing (at least not in our western culture, maybe they mean more other places). My first name is norse and connected to the norse gods, yet my family who gave it to me are all Christians
 
Isn't there a scripture in the Bible where we are going to be given a new name? I think I read it somewhere in the Bible in the past.

I know a woman that named her little boy Damian, if anyone remembers the movies about a possessed little boy, all of her friends thought she was horrible for naming her baby boy that. But he is growing up just fine. We can't control what our parents do we can only control what we do with our lives, good or bad name. There was once a popular country and western song named a Boy named Sue. It has an interesting message in the words of that song if anyone wants to look it up. I might post the words on here for everyone.

I know I'm going against the crowd, but I believe people grow into the meaning of their name. I'm not saying the child is going to be evil, but I think the meaning of a child's name is very important. Should you say something to the mother? I'd advise not to; its not your son and it may only bring hurt feelings.
 
I do think a name like that will bring a lot of teasing to the girl at some point. But, as the others have said, it is someone else's child. Are you close enough to the mother of the child to talk with her about it?
 
As long as she isn't naming her child Adolf Hitler she should be good.
 
I believe names have meaning... my unbelieving parents named me Kristine... (Kristone is Christian in Hebrew)... They named my brother Richard... My brother is really "King" of his life and seeks only after wealth and earthly importance. Whereas I was rescued from the muck that was my family and blessed to hear and seek after the Word of God. I'm not perfect, but I am content knowing and loving God.

I also feel names can follow you. In the modern world, too. Today a Jezebel is a "not nice" lady... and I honestly, feel it's a bit ridiculous to name a child such. But, they DO have the right to do so. I don't think it hurts to (without confronting) mention how you feel about the name. But there's not much you can do, so just wrap the family in prayer that they choose a name that would honor God for their child.
 
I knew a girl named bathsheba when i was in middle school...
