Hi Elphyn, welcome to CChat! I'm new too and just taking my first steps toward finding my way here. (You're actually my second post ever. Woohoo! lol). Anyway, I hope we'll both enjoy the best of fellowship and experiences here. Again, welcome! :)

I'm in the US.. NorthEast Tennessee. We just had the most lovely snow - our first of the season a couple of nights ago. It's soooo cold out, but it's very beautiful! (So cold and beautiful that I'm nestled up in bed keeping warm and exploring this chat site! LOL). Where in the UK are you?

Cumbria, the north of England. No snow here. We do get it sometimes but not often.

No. I think you are thinking of the Borders but that is Scotland right next to use so I suppose we are kind of but it usually refers to the Scottish side

Ahhh ok. I think that my dad's ancestry was from that area (although I haven't delved deeply into it). I think (from the Scottish point of view, anyway) that Cumbria was considered part of the disputed borderlands. I thought I remembered that from some articles I'd read years ago, so I double checked it on google just now to make sure that I wasn't crazy and imagining things. (although the "crazy" part could probably be argued lol). I have also read (less controversially lol) that Cumbria is a VERY beautiful region. Have you always lived there?

Yes mainly. People consider the lake District very beautiful. I lived in Southern Rhodesia in Africa which is now called Zimbabwe as a child for nearly 5 years when my dad was on the railway there.

Oh wow. Very cool. I have friends here from Zimbabwe. They came here to attend college and seminary. Do you have many memories from living there? Did you like it? (And I hope that I didn't offend you with my historical comments about Scotland and Cumbria, etc.. I didn't mean then offensively but, even so...)

No not at all. It's an age old thing. It doesn't bother me at all. And yes I remember plenty about it. I was 5 when we went and 10 when we came back. Weekend holidays one to Victoria Falls, no-one could forget that even though that was a very long time ago.
I don't know much about this site yet as to what you are allowed to ask. Like the age and sex of the person you're talking to or whether you can chat together, as this seems very difficult backwards and forwards from email notifications but maybe I'm doing it all wrong.

I'm not sure about all of it either, except that I'm chatting through the site rather than emails. I saw that in the live chat rooms they have the nics colored as blue or pink to designate if someone is male or female (I'm female, 48 if you're wondering.) It does say on the individual's profile on the site which helps to save asking, much of the time anyway. I think it might also be possible to have private messages but I'm not totally sure yet. Still working on figuring it out.

Oh.. I was going to say that even though they have the nics colored on the live chat part, they don't seem to have any designation on the website/forums. I have seen where it is listed on the profiles of other people but can't see it on my own so I keep hoping that I didn't make some kind of mistake when I registered.

Cool :) My mom just turned 68 on her birthday in November. Have you ever chatted online before this site?
