Is there any place to be that is better than Heaven? Psalm 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” John 3:16, which sums up the whole purpose of Jesus, says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Who would not want eternal life?

Heaven is described in various parts of the Bible. For instance, Revelation 22:1-4 says “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”

Who would not want to live in a place like that, and forever as well in a place with streams and trees bearing fruit, where there are no hurricanes or floods or forest fires or snow, where the sun always shines and all live in harmony? A place that is reserved for those who believe?

And did Jesus not promote Heaven? He does so in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5. He says in John 14:2-3 2 “In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

And yet when his friend Lazarus dies, Jesus brings him back to life on earth. If I were Lazarus, and I died, expecting to go to Heaven, but I am awakened to Jesus calling out, in John 11:43, “Lazarus, come out,” I would come out alright and I would ask Jesus, ‘Why did you keep me from going to Heaven when you said it is a great place to be?’

But we know the answer to that, as Jesus said it himself. In John 11:14-15 he says to his disciples, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” We know from the passages that follow, that Jesus brought Lazarus back to life so that his disciples and others would see for sure that he was empowered and commissioned by God to spread the Word of Him throughout all peoples. And those who witnessed Lazarus coming out from the cave where he was laid to rest, were convinced, for who but someone with an otherworldly connection could bring the dead back to life like Jesus brought back Lazarus? Not even a sorcerer or a magician could do something like that, so by the process of elimination it was from a source not of this earth.

So those who witnessed the event believed Jesus when he implied he was on a mission of someone named God, and he said that nobody goes to that wonderous being who promises a heavenly place for those who believe in Him, except through he himself.

Lazarus may well have wondered, “What am I doing here?” when Jesus brought him back to life. We don’t know what he actually thought about the matter, as the Bible doesn’t say. The Bible does say, ironically, in John 12:10 that “the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death…,” since they saw the following that Jesus amassed when word spread of his bringing Lazarus back to life, and Jesus was cutting into their congregation, and ruining their fun from gambling in God’s House of Worship on the Sabbath, things like that.

But it should be said though, as an aside, that people to this day may hold it against the Jews for wanting to kill Jesus, and that would imply all of the Jews. But the Jews were also among Jesus’ first disciples and followers, so all the Jews cannot rightfully be held accountable. As God said in Genesis 8:21 that “the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth,” so Satan must have had a good laugh over every innocent Jew that was persecuted throughout the centuries. For that matter, Satan must have also had a good laugh over every Christian that was persecuted as well, anything to thwart God’s Plans for us.

And perhaps when Lazarus was brought back to life on earth, Satan must have thought he had another shot at tempting Lazarus to evil, as Satan would tempt anyone on earth to evil. But the presumption is that Satan lost with Lazarus, and that Lazarus would be judged worthy of being in Heaven.

Martha answered, ‘I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’ John11:24

Lazurus did not go to Heaven when he died, nor could he

There would have been no bodily resurrection until Christ the first fruits had been raised bodily.

(1Co 15:20) But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
(1Co 15:21) For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
(1Co 15:22) For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
(1Co 15:23) But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

Moses and Elijah appeared on the Mount of Transfiguration but without their resurrected bodies. Lazarus had not experienced a bodily resurrection.

At the time that Lazarus died the Old Covenant was still in effect, and his soul and spirit would have gone to Sheol/Hades. It was only AFTER the resurrection of Christ that the OT saints were taken to Heaven (the New Jerusalem to be precise) by the Lord. So Lazarus was not being recalled from Heaven, but from Abraham's bosom.

In any event, this miracle was a divine necessity in order to bring many Jews to faith in Christ (John 11:45,47.48).

Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him...Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Laying aside the first resurrection for a moment(rev20:4&5)

And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.’
John6:39&40

When is the last day Jesus is referring to?

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death”[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ Rev20:11-15&21:1-4

The last day Jesus referred to was the last day of this present earth, when the first earth, and the first heaven will pass away.

Psalm 23 expresses the faith that we will "dwell in the House of the Lord forever." Psalm 23 was written hundreds of years, if not thousands, before Jesus came to earth.

Also, Ecclesiastes 12:7, also written before Jesus, says- "and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. " And Ezekiel 18:4, also written before Jesus, says "Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die."

As far as Sheol is concerned, Psalm 16:10 says "For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption."

What does this all mean? It means that people could be judged worthy enough to go to Heaven BEFORE Jesus came to earth. It is only a matter of not if, but when. And to be sure, Jesus said he didn't come to change the Law of the OT, but to fulfill it. So, the elements for righteousness and admittance into Heaven already existed in the OT. What Jesus did was to bring the Jews back to what the Bible really means, and to spread God's Word to the pagans.

Thus, Lazarus could have been judged to be righteous before Jesus' ascension, and, in light of 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 it was just a matter of when he would go to Heaven.
