Chicago cops smell political rat in wake of Jussie Smollett case dismissal

Livid Chicago law enforcement officials are furious Jussie Smollett has had all 16 felony charges dismissed against him after he was accused of staging his own hate crime – and they smell a political rat.

“The Chicago Police Department is not happy. Our Superintendent expressed his displeasure about the charges being dropped,” one officer in the Chicago Police Department told Fox News. “The Department exhausted manpower and numerous hours investigating this case to make sure it was handled properly."

The wiping of the case has been seen as nothing short of a "real blow" to those in Chicago's law enforcement. The department insider also noted that they have been left scratching their heads as to why the case was suddenly sealed, thus not allowing public scrutiny, and pointed to “politics” and questionable shuffles and possible interference in handling the case.

JUSSIE SMOLLETT HOAX CHARGES DROPPED, BUT FEDERAL INVESTIGATION, LAWSUITS COULD BE NEXT

“The police department worked super hard on this. They put a ton of manpower on it because they knew it sounded wrong from the beginning,” another former Chicago-based law enforcement source said.

"What’s interesting is that the former chief-of-staff of Michelle Obama called the state's attorney about the case, saying the (Smollett) family was concerned. Shortly after, the state's attorney recused herself and now the charges are dropped and the court has sealed the record.”

Rather tough on the investigators when a case like this is closed. I hope it was the lack of evidence that brought the case down, and not some dubious phone calls.

I just wonder how accurate this is:

Following the shocking news on Tuesday that former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett’s attack hoax charges had been dropped, the show's network issued a statement about the star and the day's stunning proceedings.

"Jussie Smollett has always maintained his innocence and we are gratified on his behalf that all charges against him have been dismissed,” 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement.

Chicago police post Smollett files online after prosecutor scuttles hoax case

Chicago police came out swinging Wednesday and released the full 61-page investigative report in the alleged Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax, one day after charges against the "Empire" star were dramatically dropped — but the move prompted a moot court order.

The release of the documents came one day after Cook County prosecutors dismissed a 16-count indictment against the actor, saying they had cut a deal with the TV star to perform two days of community service and forfeit his $10,000 bond to the city.

The move made it possible for Smollett's attorneys to get his criminal case immediately sealed and wiped clean.

CHICAGO COPS SMELL POLITICAL RAT IN WAKE OF JUSSIE SMOLLETT CASE DISMISSAL

About an hour after the department released the files, the Chicago police reportedly became subject of a court order that barred them from releasing further files even though they were widely available online.

The dismissal of charges against Smollett over the alleged attack drew a swift backlash from the city's mayor and police chief and raised questions about why Smollett was not forced to admit what prosecutors had said they could prove in court — that the entire episode was a publicity stunt.

Exclusive: Chicago Police Department's complete investigative file of Jussie Smollett case

CWBChicago is posting the complete Chicago Police Department investigative file on the Jussie Smollett "hate crime" investigation that we have received in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.

We have not read or reviewed the files for completeness or accuracy.

FILE 1 HERE

FILE 2 HERE

These files were provided by the Chicago Police Department in response to a FOIA request that CWBChicago submitted upon learning that the Cook County State's Attorney's Office had reached a sealed agreement to resolve Smollett's criminal exposure in the case.

Our requests for video, including bodycam, surveillance, and interrogation, was denied.

I see Trump got itself involved in the matter now - from the BBC:

Donald Trump has called the Jussie Smollett case "outrageous" and an "embarrassment to the nation".

All charges against the Empire star were dropped on Tuesday - he had been accused of arranging a fake racist and homophobic attack on himself.

The US president says the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) will now be investigating the case.

Separately, Jussie's lawyer has accused authorities of "continuing their campaign" against the actor.

The plot thickens:

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday emphatically urged President Trump to butt out of the ongoing drama over embattled "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett as he blamed him for creating a "toxic environment" where someone would allegedly fabricate such an attack.

“My recommendation is the president go to Opening Day baseball, sit on the sidelines and stay out of this," Emanuel told a group of reporters.

The mayor called Chicago a "Trump-free zone" and blamed the president for creating a "toxic" and "hate-filled" environment that allowed Smollett to think he could get away with faking a hate crime.

“Let me be clear about something. The only reason Jussie Smollett thought he could take advantage of a hoax about a hate crime is because of the environment, the toxic environment that Donald Trump created,” Emanuel said.

“This is a president who drew a moral equivalency between people who are trying to perpetuate bigotry and those who are trying to fight bigotry.

The mayor continued: “He's created a toxic environment and now he's created a toxic, vicious cycle in my view. The only reason Jussie Smollett thought he could get away with this hoax about a hate crime is because of the environment President Trump created.”

Emanuel is a frequent critic of the president, who said this week he'd have federal authorities look into the tangled Smollett case. The mayor said Trump and Smollett are part of the same "vicious, toxic cycle," a cycle he wants to break.

Wow. Finding ways to blame President Trump might as well be an Olympic sport nowadays. Whoever makes the biggest leap gets the medal. This one's a true contender.
