Cain's problem wasn't a specific fault; it was his way. (Jude 1:11)

There are Christians today whose manner of life is similar to Cain's. They're
religious enough to come to church on Sunday, and maybe even sing in the
choir and attend Sunday school; while the rest of the week do as they please
without any concern for how God might feel about what they're doing. They,
like Cain, are ruled by their base nature rather than make some effort to
control it.

Gen 4:7 . . If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? If you do not
do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;

This is the very first instance in the Bible of the word "sin". The Hebrew word
is chatta'ah (khat-taw-aw') and/or chatta'th (khat-tawth') which are
ambiguous words that technically mean an offense; as in repeat offender. In
other words; not just an occasional slip-up, but a life style; viz: a habit.

At this point in the story; Cain was very close to stiffening his resolve (i.e.
hardening his heart) to the point where he would become permanently
estranged from God, and severed from His good graces.

Gen 4:7b . . it desires to have you, but you must master it.

This is the first mention of self control in the Bible; and the requirement is
oft repeated; e.g.

Col 3:5-8 . . Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly
nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is
idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in
these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all
such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from
your lips.

Rom 8:13 . . For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the
Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

The death spoken of in that verse isn't the sum of all fears depicted at Rev
20:11-15. It's estrangement from God, and severance from His good graces.
(cf. John 15:1-6 where Jesus talks about yard debris.)
_
Adam and Cain lived under a very different covenant that didn't enjoy a clue about salvation by the blood of Christ. 4000 years later the Good News was revealed to mankind in the body and blood of Christ. Up until then even Jesus' apostles didn't have that understanding.

There was only one commandment for man in effect for Cain. He couldn't possibly repeat Adam's sin since the Garden was off limits to people, leaving Adam suffering "all his days" under the curse. There was not a mention for mankind as to what kind of sacrifice to God was appropriate. If Adam knew, it's apparent he failed to raise his sons in whatever knowledge he had about sacrifices and offerings. Whichever was expected of them was not demanded by God like Moses received.

Abram didn't have a clue about that, nor was he a champion of faith until after God spoke to him to leave Ur. When did God decree faith over Abel? We find out from Paul his offering pleased God by faith. Did Abel realize that? Which of the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 knew at their time that what they accomplished was faith pleasing to God? Is faith something mankind can plan to perform, or is faith something God designs for us to live by?

When Cain's offering was not accepted, it wasn't that God rejected it as though it was a sin before Him. The issue of sin arising in Cain wasn't until he reacted poorly concerning acceptance of Abel's offering. God made it clear that Cain could simply do what He accepted of what Abel did and that would be the end of the matter.

Cain rejected the solution offered by God. Sin then lay at the door of that ancient wilderness tabernacle (altar) with Cain's name on it if he persisted in his wrath. When Cain decided "in his heart" so to speak to seek revenge, he sinned right then even before killing his brother.

That raises another thought. Without Christ in Cain, how could God a mediate a matter of heart to be healed after disobedience? The relationship of man to God was still based on obedience to what God had already commanded. Even murder was not yet warned against man. The only recourse was for man to suffer curses instead of blessing, seeing there was yet no law against what Cain decided and performed, with no end to offenses. There is no sin without law, according to Paul. Remember, there was only yet one law towards man, not to eat of the fruit of that one tree in the center of the Garden which was no longer available to any human.

God allowed man to accumulate offenses until delivering the Law of laws against sins, and assigning specific curses for each sin, along with acceptable meditations. What happened with Cain is not a model for Christianity, but was a precedent towards establishment of the Law through Moses. Moses never offered the mediation of Christ, so that Mosaic Covenant was still based on curse and blessing, not faith, nor eternal forgiveness. Sacrifices for sins remained year to year by the sacrifice of blood of animals, and offerings of fruit of the ground.

We Christians enjoy a far better way than what Cain had available. His only recourse was to change his choice of works, that perhaps his next decision would be accounted as faith. Lord mercifully help any person that his next decision concerning religious works would condemn him or her forever. We have much knowledge today as to what sort of works amount to true faith.

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? saith The LORD:
I Am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood
of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

GOD Commanded 'burnt-offerings-sacrifice', but here, He is 'sick of them'.

the 'offerings' are certainly part of His ways - EZ. 40:-48, - 1,000 yr. reign'.

Antidote ISA. 1:16.],
Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil;
Isa 1:17.
Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

the conclusion is even if we think that we are 'walking the walk', eventually our fruits will give us
away...get drunk on Saturday nite = go to church on Sunday Morn, - go back to work as usual on
Monday morning, 'never thinking of our God'...

even if we are guilty, if we 'repent/put away our evil doings, what does God 'promise'???

Come now, and let us reason together, saith The LORD: though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.!

I think your list has little to nothng to do with the OP topic.

As well put famously by Oral Roberts years ago, Jesus is in every book of the Bible, but so are many other people. But, not one prophet except John the Baptist had any clue as to Christ coming like He did, being held in spiritual blindness by GOD until Jesus could arrive on the field. By hindsight "we" know and can detect foreshadowing of Jesus why? Because we are smart? No. The apostles finally received enough knowledge from the Holy Spirit to put it all together for us.

Again, think about it. How did Abel know what he did was of faith pleasing to God? Until the fire burnt it, Abel had to wait and see like Cain did. How should I believe that is the way it happened? There is no record of God even calling for an offering. All they had to that point was the promise by way of the woman, with no clue that might have to do with a man.

God accounted righteousness to people who pleased Him through an act of righteousness whether they understood the gravity of their action or not. True faith is almost always going to be what is done unplanned and poorly understood. Consider the refusal of Jesus' apostles to the plans for Jesus. Peter was ready to fight off Jesus' enemies.

There's a reason for that ignorance.

2 Corinthians 3:12-16 (KJV)
12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

So it is that the folks of the Old Testament couldn't have realized they lived by faith by their own wits, but faith was accounted to a few of them, and so was righteousness. It's a far reach to relate Abel's offering to what God wants from Christians. The two covenants are very different, and Adam's was farther disconnected from the third Mosaic Covenant (after the Noahic) which was backed up with specific commandments from God. Since the curse on Adam was to affect his whole life, there was no means of dealing with his sin, such as offerings to God. That curse was handed down until Moses received temporary mercies for sinners, some relief for the obedient by the blood of animals. There was no provision for Adam, Abel being murdered over it, and Cain double cursed. How does that relate to the grace of God toward believers today? It doesn't. All we know from Paul is Abel was accounted as making an offering by faith. We are to be living sacrifices, far removed from shedding of more blood for our sins.

If there's disagreement over the above, then please show how Adam or his sons could have related to knowledge of Jesus in any way like we relate to Jesus. Here's what you have to work with, as they.
Genesis 3:14-24 (KJV)
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Consider it all as though you are there with them contemplating it all over roasting some mammoth steaks over a friendly campfire. Could you have deciphered it without the sum of scripture made available long after their deaths?

All true, but what has that to do with Cain and Abel, lacking commandments of burnt offerings? There isn't a burned offering even mentioned until Gen 8:20, offered by Noah, then again commanded of Abraham with Isaac, then in Leviticus, etc. .

There's no evidence of blessing for an Adam repenting, nor for Cain, while Abel at least received heritage of faith for doing a good thing towards God even while under Adam's curse. Of the three I would suppose Abel alone was allowed to wait in Paradise for Christ to come gather the people God accounted righteousness to, some like Rahab for one act.

Good point about "anticipating revelation" vs "progressive revelation".

As the never ending debate over James vs Paul here, many people tend to assume that, just because the Holy Spirit inspired James to write his letter to the 12 tribes of Israel, and the book happened to be placed by the HS after Paul's letters, they assume that James must have understood everything about Paul's letters before he wrote James. It is as if the HS inserted a "matrix-style connector" into James and uploaded all the understanding of Paul's gospel into his mind.

That is why when we encounter James 2 when James clearly stated that

24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

these readers do lots of "mental gymnastics" to somehow able to conclude that, "Oh James is not contradicting Paul and James still believed that justification is by faith only."

I mean, if that is what James really meant to say, why don't he just say that out, instead of leaving to readers to try to "fit Paul into James"?

Abel offered blood by faith which pointed to Christ.....

Jude compares false teachers to three men....ONE being Cain that offered his works <-----same thing the "MANY" offer....Jesus said he never knew them........
Abel, the first apostle offered the faith that comes from hearing God .Cain did not believe in a God not seen . He took his brother the first martyr to suffer for a faith not of his own self, into the field thinking no one could witness his religion of those who have no faith. As in out of sight out of mind( the sign seekers) kill that misconceived competition on like that of the law of the fathers (Acts 22) as was Saul in the same place of Cain before he was born again . The pagan form of religion is walking by sight .(no faith, none.)

The new born again spirit of Abel does cry out signified as blood . literal blood without the spirit essence of life has no life to offer. You could say a sign that cries out not the literal substance.

Geneisis 4:1-8 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect (grace) unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.( no grace) And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire(Satan, the man of sin) , and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

The way of Balaam similar to the way of Cain in respect to false prophecy. That which cements the two as "one way" another-christ as a mediator another-gospel. the gospel of the antichrist . Balaam was acting as a false prophet as a priest seeking to do the will of a apposing nation and curse Israel . Cain was the first example of one who had no faith to believe God not seen and not affected by a false prophet seen like Balaam . Two examples of one way that show no glory that could be attributed to our Father not seen. The poison of Asps (false prophecy) It will not harm the believer as a sign that have believed the gospel of Christ. And not that of sinful men.

I believe that glorious faith departed when God had corrupted this present creation. .I believe it would be sort of like the parable in 1 Samuel . using the ark as a ceremonial tool to preach the suffering of Christ before hand and the glory that followed. (1 Peter1:11) . the gospel in the Old Testemtment.

1 Samuel 4:21And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

Cain was not given the faith that would be needed to work in him (Emanuel ) to both will and do the good pleasure of God. We should believe without murmuring . Not sure what that means . Its almost like he is calling his children cry babies. lol

According to Luke 11:50-51, Abel was a prophet.
_
Yes, Apostles "sent ones" the meaning of the word. They are prophets sent by God to prophesy (declare the word of God ) prophecy .

There are false apostles that bring false prophecy .

By adding other meanings to the word (apostle) it destroys the intent throughout the bible.

It is liked to plagiarism a form of blasphemy. It violates the warning in Deuteronomy 4 not to add new meaning to a word it can change the out come or intent of the author.

Like with the word apostle.( sent one ) Not those who lord it over the faith of others. Apostles, as sent ones.

Genesis 4:
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
(Abel is a shepherd & Cain a farmer)

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
(NOTE: Each brother brings an offering to the Lord)

4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
(NOTE: The fat thereof suggests Abel's offering was burned. In later time's the fat was claimed by the Lord as his own (Lev 7:4-5)

5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
(NOTE: The Lord no respect onto Cain's self works offering)

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own (SELF) works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Why was Abel's offering respected And Cain's rejected?

Abel's offering was brought thru faith & a firstling sacrifice.

Cain's offering was bloodless & brought via his own self works . MOO!

As I said, this is a very popular explanation but it fail to consider that grain offering of fine flour was acceptable as a representation of Jesus in Leviticus 2:1-5. Blood sacrifice is not a necessary condition.

This was my main point:
Gen 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock """""and of the fat thereof""""". And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
(NOTE: The fat thereof suggests Abel's offering was burned. In later time's the fat was claimed by the Lord as his own (Lev 7:4-5)

this is an idea i have heard, which i think fits very well.
consider this..

1. Adam and Eve sinned in the garden. God had warned them, (Gen 2.17) 'in the day you eat of it, you shall surely die' (i notice the NIV has taken 'day' out (do they think they are helping?), but 'day' is there in the Hebrew). Satan said to Eve, (Gen 3.4) 'you shall NOT surely die' - who do you believe, god or satan?
After it all came to light, Adam and Eve did not die as promised. Why not? We have a clue in 3.21. Adam and Eve being aware of their nakedness made themselves clothes from fig leaves, but in 3.21 'god made garments of skin' - in other words, there was an animal sacrifice which covered for their sin! (I find it astounding that this massive hint is overlooked so much).

2. Now, I think from the sacrifice above, God has probably instructed Adam and Eve that this was to be a regular requirement for them, to offer a blood sacrifice to attone for their son. And surely they would have passed this on to their children.
In Gen 4.3 we have Cain and Abel bringing their sacrifice. Comparing different versions we see 'it came to pass', 'in the process of time', 'in the end of days', 'after some time'. But I strongly suspect it was an 'appointed time' (probably annual), for them to bring a sacrifice. And no doubt it would need to be a blood sacrifice - not crops. So I think Cain has intentionally defied God to lessen the standard.

3. God's response, he says '..if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door, it desires to have you, but you must master it', which makes about no sense. I suspect a poor translation.
The word for 'sin' is in other places translated as 'sin offering'. In Hebrew it is interchangeable.
The word for 'door' may also be 'gate'. More on that in a tick.
So rather than 'sin' ready to pounce to take over Cain, it likely should be something like, 'the sin offering is lying at the gate, you only need to take it'. In other words, it has nothing to do with what Cain's occupation is, he needs to bring an animal sacrifice, which is readily available. Only he was indignant about it and CHOSE not to, hence the criticism from god, and hence his anger in slaying his brother. A guilty conscience!

4. The 'door'/'gate'. In 4.16, it says 'Cain went out from the presence of the lord'. So it seems Cain was in the physical presence of the lord during their conversations??? It is a minor point, but it seems possible that this all took place at the 'gate' to Eden, where God may have physically been. Perhaps the allocated place for their offerings???

In summary, to me it seems Cain was criticised for not bringing the proper sacrifice that was established with his parents, rather than being confused and only bringing the fruit of his labour, it was an intentional challenge to god (satan's meddling trying to mess up the standard, which has direct impact on the future true sacrifice??). It was not a goodwill offering, but an offering prescribed for the covering of sin. A sin offering.

According to Luke 11:50-51, Abel was a prophet.

Abel definitely was a 'prophet', and thus had The Spirit of Christ,
and, there is only One Holy Spirit...

WS,
it seems as though you have developed your very own personal theology along with 'oral-roberts',
this says to us all we need to know about where you get your 'inspiration'...

As I said, this is a very popular explanation but it fail to consider that grain offering of fine flour was acceptable as a representation of Jesus in Leviticus 2:1-5. Blood sacrifice is not a necessary condition.
Nations, foods and animals are used to represent belief (faith) or unbelief (no faith) in mankind in ceremonial laws. . Grain a metaphor for the incorruptible seed of Christ's word . Blood represents the spirit essence of life to represent salvation.

To drink the blood a metaphor that that show one has been given their own spirit life in jeopardy to ones own spirit . Water spit sweat is used many time as if it was blood to represent the work of the Spirit (not seen) .

All of the ceremonial laws were used to represent the suffering of Christ our bloody husband beforehand and the glory that did follow.

Cain refused to beleive in a God not seen (a symbol of no faith) Abel believed (a symbol of faith ) His blood signified as spirit cries out for his eternal incorruptible clothing ..

Abel definitely was a 'prophet who was sent out as a apostle the Greek word for sent ones. . Salach the Hebrew meaning the same . His brother murdered him making Abel the first martyr

If any man has not the Spirit of Christ than neither do they belong to him.
