Do you think this old saying is appropriate or rings true? In your life? In your experience?

From a lifetime of employment at various workplaces I would say Yes.
And often when you are the most emotional and find some colleagues unbearable, that is when you need to find a new coping mechanism.
"I cant stand this place anymore".
But you might not be able to stand the next place either. In fact it could be worse.
When i left a job on good terms and not hating the place I moved to a better workplace.

Marriage. Relationships. Partners. Friends.
Unless you marry a hardcore narcissist better to think through the pros and cons. What good points do they have?
Friends. well dont waste too much time tolerating nonsense. if you dont click move on. Here I dont think you need a devil as a friend.

By the way Im not suggesting for one minute that anyone should tolerate domestic violence or serious workplace harassment.

Just we need to gauge whether we are over reacting. Being too emotional. ( which i tend to be 😁 )
Will quitting this job make me too poor? How long can I last without a job? Can I survive on a lower income?

Could be. However, in my experience if there are devils and you're meant to meet them, you will.
A friend of mine lives in the idea life is a classroom. She learns lessons or fails them till she graduates. (dies).

Something similar to that is this idiom from Gary Hart.

“Life is a classroom. we are both student and teacher. each day is a test. and each day we receive a passing or failing grade in one particular subject: grace. grace is compassion, gratitude, surrender, faith, forgiveness, good manners, reverence, and the list goes on. it's something money can't buy and credentials rarely produce. being the smartest, the prettiest, the most talented, the richest, or even the poorest, can't help. being a humble person can and being a helpful person can guide you through your days with grace and gratitude.”

I guess some Christians might object to this old saying.
