Interesting quote about the kamikaze pilots!
Humorous at first, but upon further reflection, a helmet would improve their odds of surviving up until the time of final impact.

Well for example, an aircraft flying towards an enemy ship is likely to get lots of flak, literally!

Getting hit in the head with a piece of shrapnel will probably reduce the pilot's ability to guide the plane.

So protecting the pilot's head will improve the odds of a successful mission.

Wouldn't the kind of shrapnal that would be flying upward into a Kamikaze's canopy be traveling at such force as to pierce a mere leather cap worn by that pilot?

Possibly.
Some shrapnel would be going up, and other pieces would be coming down at different velocities.

Also, there are secondary projectiles. Suppose a piece of shrapnel hits the glass of the cockpit. The shrapnel misses the pilot's head, but there are now pieces of glass flying around.

So, and I'm just speculating, but even a leather helmet would increase the odds of success.

They were Kamikaze pilots. Sworn to die for the cause. Even when they were killed by allied planes shooting them down, their mission was still a success because they took an oath to die for the cause.
The helmet was just part of the uniform.

The basic reason seems to be that sometimes pilots would fly with the cockpit open, and a head covering in that case is very helpful.
