FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2019 - GOD'S WILL REVEALED

Prayer to our gracious God and daily meditation on His word are positive practices that will set the foundation for the rebuilding of our lives. As we take time out each day to be with God, we don’t just find out facts about Him, but we get to know His character and His ways. As we draw closer to God, we discover that we have a loving friend who knew us before we were born, knows all about us, and cares deeply for us.

There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24 NLT)

God created us with a deep longing for intimate personal sharing and understanding, trusting and being trusted. God wants us first to fulfill these desires through relationship with Him. In our relationship with others we may sometimes feel close to them and at other times disconnected and lonely. God desires that we speak heart to heart with Him about these things that really matter.

The LORD confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them. (Psalm 25:14 NIV)

The prayer and meditation to which Step 11 invites us is more than just trying to figure out God’s plan for us. Meditation and reading scripture reveal to us the nature of God and all the promises He has made to us. Underneath all our "spiritual exercises" is God's desire to affirm the unfailing love He has for us.

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. (Jude 20-21 NIV)

Improving our conscious contact with God will strengthen our faith as we seek His will in all our ways.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your unfailing love for me. I ask for strength to live as a person who honours You in all my ways. Draw me closer to You that I might dwell on those things that are close to Your heart. Amen

Many of us came to the program convinced that our feelings, our wants, and our needs were of the utmost importance to everyone. We had practiced a lifetime of self-seeking, self-centered behavior and believed it was the only way to live.

That self-centeredness doesn't cease just because we stop using drugs. Perhaps we attend our first NA function and are positive that everyone in the room is watching us, judging us, and condemning us. We may demand that our sponsor be on call to listen to us whenever we want-and they, in turn, may gently suggest that the world does not revolve around us. The more we insist on being the center of the universe, the less satisfied we will be with our friends, our sponsor, and everything else.

Freedom from self-obsession can be found through concentrating more on the needs of others and less on our own. When others have problems, we can offer help. When newcomers need rides to meetings, we can pick them up. When friends are lonely, we can spend time with them. When we find ourselves feeling unloved or ignored, we can offer the love and attention we need to someone else. In giving, we receive much more in return-and that's a promise we can trust.

Just for Today: I will share the world with others, knowing they are
just as important as I am. I will nourish my spirit by giving of myself.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2019 - AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME

…The Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’). (Isaiah 7:14 NLT)
We have just read a promise God gave to His people hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. At just the right time, this promise was fulfilled. From many other scriptures recorded in the Bible, we have solid evidence that God has set a time for each of His plans to be fulfilled. He will neither be too late nor too early. God will act at just the right time.
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:22-24 NLT)



In the Bible God has given us examples of patience and timeliness on which we can reflect. God has promised to gather His faithful people to Himself and wipe away every tear from their eyes. He patiently waits for us to come to Him and surrender our lives of selfishness and sin. He won't wait forever, but He is waiting until the season of invitation is complete. Jesus was born at God's designated time. Jesus took upon Himself the deserved punishment for our sins and died for us. At just the right time Jesus opened the door to God's saving grace so that we would be ready when He comes again for us to spend eternity with Him.


"You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly." (Romans 5:6 NIV)

Today is a good time to reflect on God's promises in the Bible and remind ourselves that, at just the right time, God will bring them all to pass for simple trusting people like us.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 NIV)

Prayer: Loving God, Help me to believe and trust that at just the right time You will make perfect all that concerns me. Amen

December 21, 2019 . . . Acceptance and Change . . Page 371

"Freedom to change seems to come after acceptance of ourselves." . . Basic Text, p.58

Fear and denial are the opposites of acceptance. None of us are perfect, even in our own eyes; all of us have certain traits that, given the chance, we would like to change. We sometimes become overwhelmed when contemplating how far short we fall of our ideals, so overwhelmed that we fear there's no chance of becoming the people we'd like to be. That's when our defense mechanism of denial kicks in, taking us to the opposite extreme: nothing about ourselves needs changing, we tell ourselves, so why worry? Neither extreme gives us the freedom to change.

Whether we are longtime NA members or new to recovery, the freedom to change is acquired by working the Twelve Steps. When we admit our powerlessness and the unmanageability of our lives, we counteract the lie that says we don't have to change. In coming to believe that a Power greater than we are can help us, we lose our fear that we are damaged beyond repair; we come to believe we can change. We turn ourselves over to the care of the God of our understanding and tap the strength we need to make a thorough, honest examination of ourselves. We admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being what we've found. We accept the good and the bad in ourselves; with this acceptance, we become free to change.

Just for Today: I want to change. By working the steps, I will counter fear and denial and find the acceptance needed to change.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2019 - ORDINARY DAY IN AN ORDINARY WEEK

Is it possible that God could do something so wonderful in us today that our lives would impact history for the Kingdom of God? How can we live in this ordinary day that will make us available to the extraordinary?

Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her! (Luke 1:45 NIV)

God had an extraordinary day planned for Mary when He sent the angel Gabriel to tell her she would conceive God’s Son and give birth to the Saviour of the world. While shock, confusion and fear may have been some of her initial feelings, Mary was quick to embrace God’s plan for her. She responded to the angel’s news by saying, “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38a NIV)

Mary saw herself as the Lord’s servant, willing to do whatever He asked. She wasn’t concerned about what her parents might think, or even her friends. Mary’s confidence was in her knowledge of God and His perfect love for her.

God has wonderful plans for each one of us just like He had for Mary. His plans may be gradually revealed to us as we follow Him, or they may jump into our lives in an instant. God's plans for Mary were shocking, inconvenient, and beyond all that she could ever have thought or imagined.
The work God has planned for us to do may be emerging with amazing revelation or it may be quietly growing and developing in our heart. Either way, today is an extraordinary day because the living God is making His good plans clear to us. Just like Mary, this ordinary day may become a not-so-ordinary day if we are willing to embrace God’s plan for us and allow God to work in us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, together with Mary we pray, “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Help me to trust You to do extraordinary things with my ordinary life. Amen

What was the worst aspect of active addiction? For many of us, it wasn't the chance that we might die some day of our disease. The worst part was the living death we experienced every day, the never-ending meaninglessness of life. We felt like walking ghosts, not living, loving parts of the world around us.

In recovery, we've come to believe that we're here for a reason: to love ourselves and to love others. In working the Twelve Steps, we have learned to accept ourselves. With that self-acceptance has come self-respect. We have seen that everything we do has an effect on others; we are a part of the lives of those around us, and they of ours. We've begun to trust other people and to acknowledge our responsibility to them.

In recovery we've come back to life. We maintain our new lives by contributing to the welfare of others and seeking each day to do that better - that's where the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Steps come in. The days of living like a ghost are past, but only so long as we actively seek to be healthy, loving, contributing parts of our own lives and the lives of others around us.

Just for Today: I have found a new way to live. Today, I will seek to serve others with love and to love myself.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2019 - ENCOUNTERING GOD

Encounters with our awesome God or His angels bring fear. On the night Jesus was born the angels sent by God to announce His birth had to reassure the shepherds, "Don't be afraid!" Once the shepherds realized that the angels wanted to communicate with them, they were willing to hear what they had to say and then to seek the Christ child of whom they spoke. God, our Heavenly Father, is a personal God who wants to share His plans with us. When we put our faith in Him, His perfect love will cast out all fear. We need never fear an unknown future for Jesus is Immanuel, God with us.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger....
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. (Luke 2:8-12, 15-16 NIV)

God’s desire is that we receive His gift of love which casts out all fear. God seeks people who are attentive to who He is, what He does, and why He does it. God wants us to experience His unfailing love for us. Will we recognize Him? Will we respond to His love? Will we share the interests of His heart and allow Him to share in the interests of ours?
This Christmas let's encounter the love of God through Jesus. Let's come close and experience the wonder of His presence with us.
Prayer: Loving God, Thank You for sending Jesus into the world so that my relationship with You might be restored. Amen

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2019 - CHRISTMAS DAY - A PROMISE KEPT

"With God, nothing will be impossible." This is what the angel told Mary when he announced God's intention to have her give birth to His Son, Jesus. Mary discovered that these words were possible on the night of Jesus’ birth just over 2000 years ago. Even before she held Baby Jesus in her arms, her response to God's choice for her life was an ecstatic song, flooded with praises to God and full of confidence in God's promise to accomplish His purposes through her, a humble Jewish girl.
Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him. His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones. He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful. For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever. (Luke 1:46-55 NLT)

When Jesus was on earth He paid special attention to the poor, the despised, the hurt, and the sinful. He rejected no one. He ignored no one. God hasn’t changed. No one is beyond the scope of God’s love or His ability to save. When our lives seem most unmanageable and we feel that no one cares, we need to remind ourselves that God both understands and cares.
The birth of Jesus is God's message to us that He loves and tenderly cares about each one of us. Whatever it takes to provide healing and restoration in our lives, God will supply. Along with Mary, we can safely turn our will and our lives over to His care.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, With you nothing is impossible. Thank you for delivering me from the darkness of sin and bringing me to the light of hope through Jesus. I ask you to fulfill Your purpose for my life and help me to honour Your name and carry Your message to others who suffer. Amen

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2019 - THE GOD OF CHRISTMAS IS WITH US NOW

The presents have been opened. Most of the turkey has been eaten. With Christmas Eve and Christmas Day behind us, it’s a good time to review our daily life, our relationships, and even our hopes and dreams for the coming year.
God is righteous, and His wisdom is infinite. There’s nothing harsh or unkind in God’s nature. We were created to be like God but sin spoiled God’s creation. As we've gathered in family groups or with friends to celebrate Christmas, many of us have witnessed sinful ways at work. Sometimes a gathering is ruined by bitterness related to a past event or ongoing addictive behaviour. We are called to love each other yet we still say and do things that disappoint and anger one another.
We truly are sinful broken people living in a sinful broken world. The joy of the Christmas story is that Jesus came to earth to show us God's love and to provide a way for us to be free from sin and brokenness.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:8 NLT)


Many new devices and gadgets received as gifts will need to have batteries installed or powered up. The new life God is offering us requires that we invite Jesus into our lives and connect to His power through the Holy Spirit. Each day, as we meditate on His word in the Bible, God will teach us how our lives are meant to be lived and will support and direct us as we seek Him in all our ways.
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (Psalm 32:8 NLT)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of new life You are offering me. I am willing to enter into this new life and allow You to guide and direct me in all my ways. Amen

Rejoicing in Trials​

James 1:2-5 / Steps 10 & 11​

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Asking God to take the lead​

"Praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power of the carry that out" means that we ask, on a daily basis, to be shown the plan for that day. We also ask God for the power we need to carry that through. We will get a yes to both requests.

We do not ask other people to show their will for us. We ask God. Then we trust that we'll be empowered to carry Gods will through.

God never, never asks us to do anything that he would not equip us to do. He never asks us to do anything we can't do. If we are to do it, we will be empowered. This is the easy part of this program. We never have to do more than we can or anything we can't. If we want to worry and fuss we can, but we don't need to. That is our choice.

I have learned, through difficult and good times, that this step will carry me through. When I don't know what to do next, God does. Working this step, one day at a time, will take us to places we could never have traveled on our own. Simple acts, done daily in accordance to God's will for us, lead to a grand plan for our life.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2019 - THE LONG WAIT

How long would we be willing to wait for God to show us the fulfillment of His plans?
God made a promise that He would send someone to bring salvation to Anna and her people. For more than 60 years Anna waited for the fulfillment of the promise. While she waited, she trusted God and served Him. She didn’t get angry and complain and give up on God in frustration. She just did the simple things she knew to do, one day at a time and waited.
Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem. (Luke 2:36-38 NLT)
We don’t know how long we need to wait for the fulfillment of events God has planned for our lives. It likely won’t be sixty years. What we need to understand today is that God's plans are perfect, and God's timing is right. God wants us to walk with Him and do the ordinary things He has instructed us to do, even in the middle of difficult circumstances. As we do that, we will experience the best life possible each day, and make ourselves available for all that God has planned for our future.

The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord. (Lamentations 3:25-26 NLT)
As this year comes to an end and we move into the next, let’s focus on today and trust God’s plan and God’s timing for our future.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I find it hard to wait. Help me to trust Your promises for my future and be willing to continue to do the next right thing. Amen

Now that we've finally admitted our insanity and seen examples of it in all its manifestations, we might be tempted to believe that we are doomed to repeat this behavior for the rest of our lives. Just as we thought that our active addiction was hopeless and we'd never get clean, we might now believe that our particular brand of insanity is hopeless.

Not so! We know that we owe our freedom from active addiction to the grace of a loving God. If our Higher Power can perform such a miracle as relieving our obsession to use drugs, surely this Power can also relieve our insanity in all its forms.

If we doubt this, all we have to do is think about the sanity that has already been restored to our lives. Maybe we've gotten carried away with our credit cards, but sanity returns when we admit defeat and cut them all up. Perhaps we've been feeling lonely and want to go visit our old using buddies. Going to visit our sponsor instead is a sane act.

The insanity of our addiction recedes into the past as we begin experiencing moments of sanity in our recovery. Our belief in a Power greater than ourselves grows as we begin to understand that even our brand of insanity is nothing in the face of this Power.

Just for Today: I thank the God of my understanding for each sane act
in my life, for I know they are indications of my restoration to sanity.

He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come…..he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. (Isaiah 61:1-3 NLT)

Our new life, free from the destructive dependencies of the past, is a living witness that recovery is possible. Whether we are sitting at a recovery meeting or simply interacting with others, we are sure to be in contact with hurting people who need to know how to find a new way of life. God has given each of us the assignment of sharing our experience, strength, and hope so others are encouraged to give Him the opportunity to set them free from their addictions.
Today, as on our first day in recovery, we know that we are powerless without God. When we gave our will and our life into His care, we saw a power greater than ourselves in action. Others encouraged us as we heard their stories of God’s faithful companionship on the recovery journey. Now it’s our turn. To share with others, we don’t have to pretend we know more than we know or have experienced. God wants us to use our truthful experience of life in recovery with Him to bring hope to others.




What we have received, we are to share with others. When we share our pathway to recovery, we become more conscious of the fact that God has guided us each step of the way.
Telling our story will bring comfort and hope to others who don’t know which way to turn. Let’s give this gift today.

Sometimes it seems as if our recovery is growing much too slowly. We struggle with the steps; we wrestle with the same problems; we labor under the same uncomfortable feelings day after day. We wish that recovery would move a little faster so we could find some comfort!

Wishing doesn't work in recovery; this isn't a program of magic. If wishes cured addiction, we all would have been well long ago! What does give us relief in recovery is action and prayer.

Narcotics Anonymous has worked for so many addicts because it is a carefully designed program of action and prayer. The actions we undertake in each of the steps bring more and more recovery to each area of our lives. And prayer keeps us connected to our Higher Power. Together, action and prayer keep us well-grounded in recovery.

Just for Today: My recovery is too precious to just wish about it. Today is a good day for action and prayer.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2019 - HOPE FOR WHAT CONCERNS ME TODAY

Troubles come, sometimes one on top of another. Pressure builds. Sadness deepens. We ask, “Where is God in the middle of our troubles?” As we move towards the new year it’s important to not forget what we have just celebrated. Jesus left the light and splendor of heaven, broke into the darkness and chaos of life on this planet, and brought peace and hope for those who put their trust in Him.
This is GOD’s Message, the God who made earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as GOD: ‘Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.’ (Jeremiah 33:2-3 MSG)

Jesus longs to comfort and strengthen us in our times of vulnerability. If we ask for His guidance, He will show us the right way to handle any problem we may encounter. He may even show us new ways to resolve lingering issues, ways we never even thought about or considered.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. The Lord will perfect that which concerns me. Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. (Psalm 138:7-8 NKJV)

We come to believe that there is a solution to every problem because God is with us. We give our will and our life into God's care and do what is right. We then wait prayerfully in His care and protection until the problem is resolved. We refuse to give in to hopelessness that says nothing works and nothing will ever change. We keep looking to God and His amazing power to perfectly fulfill His good purposes in everything that concerns us.

Seems like a good plan to carry forward as we close out this year and move into the next.
Prayer: Gracious God, I choose to stand with You and trust You to show me the way forward in everything that concerns me today. Thank You for Your care and guidance. Amen
