Yes. They are definitely being taught the subject of hell. And they have received a book to read on satan. I am not so sure what is the name of the book something called The divine movie. And they are being taught that when you die you must first go to hell.
If this belief was taught as truth by a teacher at the school I teach at (a private Christian school) many people would be contacting the teacher and administration--including other staff. I would be somewhat surprised a person with that sort of belief would make it through the interview and vetting process at the school I teach at. But if for some reason they did, it would be corrected immediately in one way or another. Many of the students would not stand for this sort of belief being propagated in class.

If it is not a Christian school, I would like to know the context in which the idea is being taught.

Yes. It seems very similar.

I'm wondering if he meant Divine Comedy by Dante for the text that is being taught, which is not abnormal to be taught in schools public or private alike. Inferno specifically describes Dante's travels through hell.

You very well could be correct. From a literary standpoint that has been assigned reading to students.

You are right. Her mom told me this morning, the learners attend catholic church. And maybe that's why they don't find the doctrine strange. Only the two South Africans which has not grown up with this kind of doctrine.

But the parents are in contact with the school to try to get them exempt from attending that class.

They have asked for your prayers. I cannot fathom that learners are not taught the truth. I feel very sad. And the bible is not consulted.
God bless

Yes. Maybe you could ask her if this is the work they are studying? Also, would you mind asking which class it is being taught in? Is it English class?

Ah, that would make sense. I know a certain amount about Catholicism. I do know that the doctrine or purgatory comes from the Apocryphal Book of 2 Maccabees which is part of the Catholic Bible.

Then under the tunic of each one of the dead, they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was the reason these men had fallen. So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous Judge, who reveals the things that are hidden; and they turned to supplication, praying that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out," (2 Maccabees 12:40-42a).

This is where the notion of purgatory and paying indulgences cake from. As a side note, Judaism as a whole has rejected these books as not being divinely inspired and why modern Protestants do not consider them part of scripture.

In the case of Purgatory, they are then being taught a false teaching. Taking into consideration all related scripture regarding the subject of Hades/hell, once a person dies without the shed blood of Christ covering them, their record is sealed. At that point, God's grace and mercy, as well as the offer of salvation, are no longer in operation.

There are unfortunately three individual words translated as Hell:

Tartarus/Tartaroo = Used once in 2 Peter 2:4 referring to the place where the angels who sinned and who were put into chains of darkness under the earth until the great white throne judgment. These spoken of where most likely those angels who took wives from the progeny of mankind and brought forth the Nephilim/giants and corrupted mankind by teaching them sorcery, divination, astrology, etc., etc. Jude 1:6 also mentions these angels by description only.

Hades - Had-ace - Is defined as properly, the "unseen place," referring to the (invisible) realm in which all the dead reside, i.e. the present dwelling place of where all the spirits of the unrighteous dead depart to. There are many scriptures that identify the location of Hades as being in the depths of the earth (see Luke 10:15). Hades is synonymous with Sheol, i.e. they are the same place.

Gehenna = The final place of punishment for all of the unrighteous dead, i.e. all of those whose names do not appear in the book of life at the great white throne judgment. Other names for it are, the lake of fire, the second death and everlasting fire. This is the place that was created for Satan and his angels (see Matt.25:41)

According to the Catholic teaching of Purgatory, once a person receives Christ as Lord and Savior and are baptized, all sin up to that point is forgiven. All sins committed after Baptism are absolved by the priest after performing the appointed sacraments. Any sin that is not absolved during the persons life, will be put into Purgatory in order to be purified through the flames. According to their teaching, everyone will go to Purgatory for an undisclosed amount of time.

However, the truth is that Jesus paid the penalty for all sins, past, present and future as long as we continue in faith. For 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Also, the true believer does not need to be absolved by another sinner, for we are able to go directly to the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. In addition, there is one mediator between God and man, which is Christ Jesus who sat down at the right hand of God and who always makes intercession for us. We neither need to go through Mary nor a Catholic priest, but we are told to pray to the Father in the name of Christ alone.
